2+ Tips to Planting Peas in the Summer for a Fabulous Fall Harvest: Plant Peas in Early August!

Start your peas early in August or even late July (in cooler areas) to allow for a frost free harvest period of 2-3 weeks. Use shade cloth to help them grow through the August heat. Direct sow, water often, and you will have fabulous fall peas. The mistakes are planting to late into the season and not protecting them from the summer sun and heat.

Thanks for this video. I just planted some last week, but think I will put out more. I noticed in Great Britain the eat the young pea shoots, as well as the pods and peas. They put the fresh shoots in salads or cook them in stir fry.

I lined the bottom and sides of my grow bags with thick cardboard and bought round livestock feed trays from Tractor Supply to sit many of them in. This helped to keep the soil moist. If you can find 18 inch wide round sink basins that works as well and costs much less.

I put pvc TJoints on top of my posts to keep them from poking through my shade cloth. You can also use elbows and tees on T-Posts to create good structured support.

Good tips as usual, thanks Gary! Our sugar snap peas just started really dying back a week ago here in Michigan zone 6A, so I finally took them out earlier this week, they still were producing pods, but they were no longer nice and sweet freshly picked. I am still shocked we had good production of snap peas so far into summer, normally by mid June they're toast. I think I'll plant some sugar daddy and sugar ann peas for fall, the 60-75 day range should be just right, and I can put them in the greenhouse in October if it gets too cold too early.

I agree with doing multiple plantings. This spring my early peas had terrible germination ( too cold) but the early May planting was our best crop ever. I watered them every day after they sprouted ( zone 6B, no rain for six weeks) and I was still getting good numbers of peas in mid July. I’m planting fall peas in a hoop house and I’ll pit the cover on when it gets cooler and they will get an extended late summer season.

We're just south of you in Virginia. Same growing zone and average fall frost date. My wife wants lots of shelling peas. My biggest challenge is freeing up space and fencing the beds off from the rabbits. I have four more beds to cleanup and refresh. I think I'll have some additional space open up next week too. Always good information. Plain and simple directions.

Gary, this year, any of the seeds I planted directly in my garden beds, the birds have dug up. I tried putting fine straw over the seeds, but nothing has sprouted. Any suggestions?

I just cut my spring planted peas at ground level obce all the peas were picked or dried (for seed saving). Some of those plants are actually comibg back. So I may plant a few more and see if they have time to produce.

Forecast is well over 100° through the end of August. We no longer sacrifice any seeds to being cooked, eaten by birds, or supplying leafy stuff for the rabbits. Mid Sept is probably earliest for getting 75 days till earliest frost, and a cooler, wetter winter due to the coming warming pattern in the mid-Pacific

Here is a trick I used last spring with great success. Soak your peas in water for three to four days, until roots have sprouted from most of the peas, then plant them. You should see the first sprouts in three or four days, and germination will be high, even with the peas that didn't sprout roots.
