The RV-7 is actually two different planes. If you fly it stock, you've got a great aerobat that can be flown docile or aggressive. If you upgrade it to a 60 amp Avian ESC and Maule M7 prop/motor combination (with a Du-Bro 1.75" spinner) you've got a speed demon that flies super aggressive. Push it to even more absurd limits with upgraded metal geared Spektrum servos and rehinge it for full span ailerons, and you've got a gorgeous bird that can basically do anything you tell it to.

Well done Jon. Amazing how well most planes perform in a review when the assessment is fair and the expectations are realistic. No plane is perfect for everybody, but the RV-7 does exactly what it was intended to do, and it's perfect for pilots that want that.

Thanks for the upgrade ideas. The lighting on this bird is really nice, too. A lot of my fly time happens later in the day. Good, visible, well placed LEDs make a big difference at twilight or later. Might have to get one. Soon as my credit card recovers from last month 👍

I love mine! It can fly stupid slow and look great doing it. It flies surprisingly well even with a 4000 mah 4s if that's all you have on hand. And what a night flier, the lights are so good stock I fly it in full on dark. I almost sold it after the first few flights, for some reason it took a lot of time to grow on me, but eventually I loved it -:)

I have the balsa EFlite RV-9 and I've always loved it to death but it's getting stupidly rare and impossible to replace if I do something stupid. So I'm thinking about grabbing one of these. I love the looks. I wish EFlite would do a trike gear RV-7a or RV-9a. That'd be awesome too.

Great review of an overlooked plane. I did manage to strip my rudder servo due to some rough handling by my lovely wife. I feel that most planes with a tail wheel attached to the rudder deserve a metal gear servo. I have no qualms about making improvements to this plane. It tracks even better than the Valiant.

Hi Jon, thanks for the review of the RV, I am looking or rather was looking for something around that size , definitely on my next the list for my next purchase, I will also do the tyre upgrade as well. Being in the UK, I wish that there was a plain model available so I could scheme it as one that flies out of my local airfield. Thanks again for an honest appraisal . Kevin

It would be nice to see some models without decals applied so one could paint it however they wished. As far as paint schemes go in stock form, this one's pretty nice!

Upgraded mine with the Maule motor and prop esc.. turned it into a good FPV plane for 5 minute flights

The thumbnail still says "buyer beware" - beware of what? That it was never advertised as a 3D or bush plane and isn't capable of being either - at least not without extensive mods? That isn't anything to beware, that's a conclusion anyone could draw from the available information. Pretty much nobody bought the RV-7 thinking it would be a 3D airframe. The video you're referencing is disingenuous. The people who fly for that channel are intelligent and highly skilled. It's almost insulting to think that they wouldn't be aware of these things.

Other than the obvious size difference, how do you think the RV-7 compares to the Commander mPD? They're both low wing aerobatic planes HH describes as good skill-building intermediate planes. Sure, the RV-7 is licensed and scale, and the Commander is "scale-like", with more RC design influences, but does that come through in flight? I haven't had a chance to fly either, but I'm looking for an easy going low wing taildragger and they both look tempting.

We personally prefer the RV-7 to the Commander, which, while interesting, just feels kinda sluggish and underpowered compared to the RV-7. Not that it is, it just feels like it in a direct comparison between the two. In terms of aerobatic modification, the RV-7 is way more fun with the motor/prop upgrade.
