The American Express Bonvoy Brilliant, with it's hefty $650 Annual Fee, was my first travel card. Should it have been? No. Do I regret it? Not for a minute. I've gotten incredible value from this card each year - even after becoming a Hyatt fanboy!

My only issue with the Bonvoy Brilliant is that it earns Marriott points. If it earned Cashback or Amex Membership Reward points, I would have 2. I’ve never gotten more than 0.3cpp of actual value from a Marriott point redemption. (The list price of the room they upgrade me to might be $1100 at time of upgrade, but I would never book a room and pay more than $300, so the value of the upgrade room is still capped at $300).

I'm not going to spread hate on Marriott points (there are some people who love them dearly), but I hear your point. There are definitely stronger ecosystems out there that I target my spending at. Marriott is not my first choice for hotels, but I still find positive value out of this card each year.
