Layman terms: A quick and easy tutorial on this package deal to get you started. The Nikon D300s is not just a great DSLR camera, it has a few extra features such as (LV) Live View mode or recording mode (Movies). The Nikkor AF 80-400mm F4.5-5.6D (AF-D) VR lens is discontinued but it's still a great lens with a nice long range from 80 to 400mm. Please note: The Nikkor AF-D lenses requires a motor built-in your Nikon SLR or DSLR to be fully compatible. For those wanting to take a great picture of the Moon will need a decent tripod with stable head system, LV (live view) mode for sharpest image possible and your cameras self timer to reduce vibration.

This was extremely helpful to me. I have all kinds of bodies (my F6 is the king), and I have all kinds of very good glass. However I am doing a birding trip in Peru where weight is a real consideration. I can't carry around a bag of primes. I'm also tired of carrying around a huge plastic bag of 35mm rolls in my camera bag. I decided to go DX for this new trip because I want to gain the 1.5x magnification of an FX zoom on a DX body. I'm taking my D300, a DX 28-105 for the majority of photos, and the mighty 80-400 AF-D for when the birding opportunities arise. I figure I can get two weeks in Peru with these two lenses without killing myself with a bag full of 2.8s and 1.4s, etc... My only learning curve is that I switched to film several years ago and I forgot how to rip through the menus of a Nikon DSLR in a timely fashion. In this video you pointed out several specific things about setting up the 80-400 and again, it has been extremely helpful.

That's awesome. My hope is for people to put more energy out in the field and less time/energy on the Tech... So as to enjoy the art of photography. Sadly, I no longer have a Nikon F6 :( but I have many other film cameras such as F3, F4s, F5, F100 and the various FM/FE cameras. It would be nice for you to put some photo's as a collage onto youtube, it might also be a good idea to carry just one little prime lens with a FM/FE camera just in case. Wish you all the best.

I agree it is a nicely balanced combination. The D300 is heavy, relatively speaking compared to D3xxx. I have the D300 and just bought a used one of this lens from mpb and I’m well pleased. The D300 is a 1.5 crop sensor so the lens is 120 - 600.

No. Unfortunately not... This is for any Nikon SLR or DSLR that have a built-in-motor: Such as D5, D4, D3, D2x etc. D500, D300, D200 etc. D70, D80, D90... The D3000 series, D5000 series do not have a built-in-motor to save on cost but mostly to save on weight & portability. The D3500 is a beautiful little camera but for Auto Focus systems the lenses must be AF-S (newer version) but I have found them perfect for Nikon Manual (Old Nikkor) lenses like the 500mm F8 Catadioptric... you can turn that into a powerful little fieldscope for planets & birdwatching. Sorry, if this answer has come to late.

Yes. It works well on DX & FX but not DX cameras without a Built-in-motor such as D5000, 5100, 5200 series or D3000, D31000 etc series... D7000 is a very nice camera and I too use this 80-400 on that when shooting birds, robins in trees far away. I use FX when I want more of the surroundings in the photo like an outdoor event/concert and you want or need that feel of commanding your position :) .

I think you will need an FTZ adapter to do that.

Yeah cool, you'll have to get it listed or send it to a shop that specialises in these item, like myself, not just any shop but location for you will be important. I'm located in the North West of UK... Not ideal for many.
