Moved from Cedar City, UT to Bellingham, WA. Made the trek from Boise to Kennewick as the sun was setting. Rain drizzling in Oregon. Driving the longest Uhaul with a Caravan behind it towed. Passed down Cabbage Hill unknowingly while it was slick and cooking the brakes. Quite a beautiful drive...rolling hills, rain, trees, etc. Fun.
I have had, as a driveaway contractor, the pleasure of delivering many trucks to Portland, OR from all points east of there. I-84 WB is one of the most scenic routes in the country. And yes, the WB downhill run on Cabbage Hill is SPECTACULAR. Late summer is the best, when you can see the green and gold grid patterns of farms as you crest the top of the plateau, some 2000 feet above the valley floor. In the 1870's a farmer by the name of Crawford lived on the mountain, and raised sheep and cabbages for market. The farmer, farm, sheep, and the cabbages are gone, but the name “Cabbage Hill” remains.
What a crazy video! Freewayjim originally intended this video to talk about beautiful scenic roads in Oregon. RIP to all who died in the Oregon wildfires given that some parts of the state are on fire not sure if that specific part of I-84 is on fire but it won't be surprising though if that turns out to be case.
Hey Jim! I just started watching your videos and I really enjoy the ride alongs through through scenic views 😎 hope I can join the journey as well with your freeway videos and all more in the future. I really enjoy the Albuquerque I-40 E bond. My family lives up there and in Santa Fe.
Great video shot Jim. Yes I've been on I-84 twice, first time heading to Baker City Oregon and Boise, Idaho, and second time going home to PA from WA. I'll never forget the s curves going up cabbage hill lol. But beautiful scenery.
I enjoyed the previous Cabbage Hill video and looked forward to this, and as soon as I heard the first few notes of "Year of the Cat", I thought, "okay, this should be real good." And it was. Nice job slowing it down and the music was just perfect. Great scenery and a rich song. And I did not know that Alan Parsons worked on that song. No wonder I've always liked it.
Chris Christian I’m not sure what you’re implying🙂 but I live in Hong Kong, it’s a highly developed city compare to other third world countries in Asia but sadly CCP intervention with our politics is making the city less politically free or safe. It’s a weird one country two system thing, search in google if you’re interested to know more about this. Although it’s overflowing in some place, I would still like to live in the states/Canada in the future I guess my education shaped me this way.
@@kennethchung9826 ai mate. I think its a question of time before the CCP forbids RU-vid and google. Hopefully you can migrate to a nice place and stay away from Winnie the Pooh
Nice ride- always interesting to see I-84 and it is quite scenic- lush green hills, mountains- this is what I love about interstates if you ask me- you see it all and you get all kinds of scenic routes! Nice ride- and was worth doing a double-feature tonight! Sometimes time gets away from me and well- I do love a double feature! Great ride! Oregon is also on my bucket list of places to visit in my lifetime as well! I have really enjoyed your remixes, and your commentary on videos.
I recently discovered your channel. As a former long haul trucker I enjoy seeing all of your videos as I have driven down many of the same roads you have shown. I have been both up and down cabbage. Kinda surprised you didn't do the casino at the bottom. Cabbage is extremely frightening going downhill in chains on snow. I am amazed I didn't have to change underwear at the bottom but it was stressful. Not sure if you got I80 through Iowa but Heywood Banks has an excellent song for that. Diversions on I80 through Iowa have the largest truck stop in the world in Wolcott IA and just 5 minutes off of I80 is riverside IA. Future birthplace of Capt. James T. Kirk.
I did not know there was a casino at the bottom, we just finished lunch when the video started so I was in no mood to stop (nor would I stop for that anyway), had a schedule to keep. I've not driven I-80 in Iowa yet, thank you for watching.
Sorry for some of the snarkiness of a few of the commenters Jim. Looks like you’re taking it in stride, which I’m glad of because i really like your videos! Keep it up! Thanks again big guy!
I think this remake works. When I drove this route a few years back, I stopped at the scenic overlook for a few photographs. I have not gone westbound on I-84 either. I'm surprised how large both Washington & Oregon are!
I love this remix of Video 16-31. For me, the song fits great in this remix is better than the original. Also, the view of Cabbage Hill in Oregon and even the Oregon Trail looks amazing. This is why Oregon might have been one of the best states to visit or live in.
Also, I-84/US 30 in Oregon was a great scenic drive, even when you're in the mountains and trees just east of Portland. Sometimes, US 30 splits from I-84 in some areas despite it runs concurrent in most of it's length until reaching I-86 in Utah.
Hi Jim! If you still plan on going to New England in the future, please go through Binghamton, NY and explore the I-81 and I-86 interchange at the north end of the concurrency. They completely rebuilt it over the last few years and it is very impressive.
I hope to go to New England but that excursion probably won't happen, that area is way out of my way for not very much, I've seen pics of that interchange, it's OK but nothing special.

"In the early 1900s Julie English, a widow, and her three children lived in a log cabin near the Cabbage Hill school. There were other families living in the vicinity. The area is now known as Poverty Flats. All the families had large cabbage patches, as their gardens seemed to provide a good growing environment for the vegetable. English would hitch up her two horses to a long, wooden wagon and bring cabbages and 4-foot lengths of firewood to Pendleton. She would sell them to the local residents. This was her way of making a living for her family." (www.eastoregonian.com/community/cabbage-hill-earned-its-name-in-an-earlier-era/article_738718c8-844e-5bcf-8376-34d348735cb6.html)
Since you mentioned In-N-Out in the commentary, the first 3 In-N-Outs are scheduled to open in Colorado before the end of the year (and already show Coming Soon on their website!) with 9 so far teed up. Not sure if that will factor in to your next adventure, but if it does ...
Ah yes, Cabbage Hill westbound is a unique experience (in a truck) to say the least. But in a car it's gotta be a fun ride! Maybe this Summer (2021) Wife-woman will agree to a little side trip.
3000 feet high in northern Oregon in the winter precip is similar to 6000 feet in north central CA (Donner Summit I 80) or 8000 ft in Southern CA (Tejon/Cajon passes)
Perhaps it's just on account of the video speed, but those seem like rather extreme curves for an Interstate...I'm a little surprised that they fit into the parameters of what's allowed.
This was shot 4 years ago....have you watched the other videos on this channel? It's not been an issue before, I think my son bumped the tripod a few times along the way.
Hey Jim, it was a great video! Ur choice of music makes it even better. In regards to going the opposite direction on Cabbage hill, see this video by "Unclecoolie Productions" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MizGoYFVdzQ.html . The descent in the opposite direction down Cabbage Hill starts at 9:52:00 Hope it helps. Love ur channel ❤️ Have a great day! :) Edit: You can see it on Gogle Maps/Apple Maps, and/or watch it at a slower play speed as its over in less than 2 minutes
