Thank you so much for your videos Stephen. I'm a 44 year old lawyer, I've played the piano all my life but always wanted to play the drums. I started drum lessons in June (with my 7 year old son) and bought a full set of acoustic drums on the weekend. I am hooked on your videos - it's just so good to follow your lead and play beats that sounds so damn good! Thanks again.
Thanks for including the sheet music for these beats, and the Notation Table provided at the top of the sheet! I grew up playing trumpet/baritone in high school/college, but always wanted to play the drums. That was twenty years ago now, but both my boys ( 4 and 11 yrs old) have shown interest in playing the drums recently. I just picked up a new Roland TD-1DMK set, and these lessons are perfect for getting them started playing simple beats to get them exited to learn more! Thanks so much for your time and effort!
Thank you for these amazing teaching videos. I've always wanted to play drums but never had a kit. Today I traded 2 dirtbikes for a ddrum double bass 10 piece drum set with 12 cymbals. I know its way to much drum for a beginner but I couldn't pass it up. Just finished figuring out how to set it up and now I'm on your channel doing what I've dreamed about for years. Learning to play. I've gone over this video 4 times and have many times to go. I can't wait to learn some songs. This is more fun than I ever imagined. Thank you again
Great video that demonstrates how mastering the basics of 4/4 and playing simple grooves well opens the door to playing so much music. It's fair to say that each of these 20 drum beats are used in at least another 10 songs. That's 200 songs one could play. Then if you consider how many grooves are either just slight variations of these grooves and one could play a total of 500 songs possibly, It's too easy to get caught up in all the sick grooves, cool chops, epic fills, super-human hand speed and somehow still not be able to just play some good music with other people.
beat #1: Beverly hills by weezer 1:37 beat #2: free falling by tom petty 2:56 beat #3: are you gonna go my way by lenny kravitz 4:09 beat #4: closer by the chainsmokers 5:09 beat #5: dreams by fleetwood mac 7:05 beat #6: wow by post malone 8:06
my new ludwig breakbeats kit comes in next week! can’t wait to get back to playing after all these years and start from scratch! gonna be coming back to this videos a lot!!!
Couple other recommendations for simple drum songs for drilling a groove : Lenny Kravitz - american woman / Again / Low / NYC (offbeat hat) / I'll be there, beegees- stayin' alive, and a bonus challenge one for trying e on bass Nathan East - Daft Funk,
I'm a super beginner and this helps me much. Thank you. 😁Love this ecclectic song choices. I wish there is a side lesson for raw beginners for the foot work tips. If you ever create a separate raw beginner lesson, repeating the foot work or hand work more than 1x in the same moment helps. Otherwise we have to scroll to rewind, which is tricky. 👐🥁🎵🎧👐😁👍
I find it really fun as an at least semi-experienced drummer who has begun teaching to look back and see what kind of stuff I used to play when I started about 7 or 8 years ago, nowadays it's all blast beats and shit but its fun to get a blast from the past, but ya never know sometimes i pick something up that I've never seen or done before lol. I love your stuff btw ur a great drummer whos very fun to watch.
thanks for sharing of knowledge. you're a good teacher. i saw you first on DRUMEO giving a tutorial on fills. your videos are very helpful especially for us here in the 3rd world. most of us here can't afford private lessons. thanks again.
Exellent video!! With combinations of those 20 grooves you could play in any pop, rock band!! Especially with your 5 basic fills video!! I feel for these younger, newer drummers exposed to all these crazy gospel chops videos!! I've never had a band member or engineer ask me to play busier!! Really enjoying your channel. Just subscribed!!
Love your lessons...awesome! Any thoughts of perhaps including a few CCM or gospel grooves? You may be surprised at how many of your subscribers are drummers in church or aspiring church drummers and not necessarily aspiring circuit band drummers. Thanks bro! 🥁
Something nice to hear would be some cross-stick beats. I really dig Montez Coleman's part on "Strasbourg-St. Denis" off Roy Hargrove's _Earfood_ album.
Not sure what how you pick what songs you break down to teach but was wondering if you plan on doing the song Pamela from Toto with the great and latest Jeff Porcaro. Great song with real nice beat and effects. Just wondering. Keep up the great work. Love your channel
Hi Stephen, as always your Videos are awesome. I have a questions not related to the beats but about beginner drumming. When i play sometimes the ends of the sticks tangle up in the fabrics of my trousers. Ok sounds funny but this could ruin a song. I tried the change the hight if the stool but then the snare hight has to changed for me the same way, so no change, maybe thats the reason why some drummers wear "funny" trousers on stage. Do you or someone have some recommendations? Thx.
At around 4:50 Stephen starts doing some sort of back and forth motion with his right hand. Anyone know what this technique is or is intentional at all?
Ismael Tovar I’ve recently switched back to a single ply head on the snare. They’re dying A LOT faster than the double ply’s I was using. Didn’t realize the sound was so off in the mix until after I recorded this.
Am I the only one who did this Taylor: ok so we’re gonna do the bass on 1,2,3 and 4 Me mishears: ok so let’s do this Me doing bass on the ands: one AND two AND three AND four AND Me: doing for 5 mins Me: wait hold up that’s like SUPER TO HARD Me: rewatches that part Taylor: ok so we’re gonna do the bass on 1,2,3 and 4 Me: IM STUPID
@@little_gwenny oh I'm sure he put it in the description, I'm just joking around and giving him a hard time because he said he put it in the pinned comment.
@@StephenTaylorDrums thank you for taking this as the sarcastic joke it was meant to be, I hope you had fun at the waterpark I just love pointing out inconsistencies in videos, not to be a jerk just because it's funny.
Stephen Taylor all good thanks for the reply and wanted to make sure you guys knew and appreciate that u read the comments ❤️ love your stuff I am a beginner drummer never had a lesson and yet have learned so much from you you’re absolutely awesome I really like your teaching style 👍🤙🏻
Somebody swiped your shoelaces... I'll give 'em back when you return the cymbals you stole because I didn't subscribe quick enough! Brings up an off topic question; what do you look for in shoes when you play? Another great vid - Thank You Stephen!
Personally i prefer barefoot but i find vans and convers are good dont really want anything loose or floppy but i have played in flip flop so whatever you can make work
Hey man I love you and your drumming but.... your snare sounds like garbage in this video?! Don’t want to be negative you’re an incredible drummer and your kit normally sounds amazing.
Sativa Sam we had issues with the snare this go round. It’s a newer snare and I’ve switched to single ply heads where we were using double ply. The head was just completely dead. Didn’t know until after and was listening back.
