We are between Altoona and Horse Shoe curve on the Pennsy mainline in the Allegheny's on a beautiful fall day. A west bound with three ex-Erie Lackawanna SD45-2 can be heard before they are seen. The 20 cylinders have a very distint deep sound as the roar west toward the top of the hill at Cresson. Then we se a three unit set of nearly new SD50's with the wheels squeeling as it slips slight into the curve up-grade. The third clip is an east bound dropping down grade in dynamic braking. VHS video was taken 10/15/1989.
Thanks for watching. Jackmp294.5™...

I love the anticipation when you can hear those surging EMD's around the curve, but you can't see them yet.

What an awesome look back to something that will NEVER be replicated again in railroading in the US. Jack, too cool. I caught 2 NS "SD45-2s" leading a mainline train back in 2009 which was amazing in itself. But they no longer had 20 cylinders.. downgraded to the 16-645E..still great none the less but not like this. Thanks for posting this great catch of pure horsepower.

The problem we've had with our 645E3 (and E7 modifieds with "eco" injectors) V20's in marine service is the spider cracking on the flywheels. That component EMD just didn't make strong enough. So with good maintenance, they'll last forever! We love them, but they do suck fuel. We've run them at about 825-840 RPM, on a slightly lower fuel rack setting, and that means about 3400 HP.

Grew up between two double tracked mainlines. CSX to the left and Conrail a few miles back. Believe it or not, I could tell if it was a Conrail or CSX by thr sound of the engines. I love CSX. But Conrail has a special place in my heart and can NEVER be replaced.

these SD45-2s were on helper duty, as they would regularly do at horseshoe for many years. I caught them in pusher/helper service there in 1991. i got a shot with about 7-8 of them sitting ready for work. Also, at some point, CR re-engine them with 16 cyl.

Both the SD45 and the SD50 were trouble prone locomotives, with some engineers remarking on the poor riding of the SD50. They DID put out some awesome horsepower; 3600 for the SD45, and later production SD50's put out a whopping 3800.

You're correct. Neither are as reliable as the SD40-2. Most RRs found that by either reducing the compression on the SD50 greatly improved reliability, but reduced it to 3000 HP. Some SD45s are refitted with the 645E3V16 that the SD40-2 has. The V20 in the SD45 has been known to tare it's crank shaft apart.

100 cylinders total at the beginning, that makes a lot of cylinders. Would like to hear a 20-cylinder at higher RPMs, the sound would be very cool but those locomotives engines aren't made to rev.

One thing I noticed is that RR companies often align many powerful locos, sometimes up to 6. This must create a tremendous tractive effort on the tie (or knuckle) between the last loco ans the first car! Somebody knows how much effort a knuckle can take?

Euh... I'd rather believe 300,000 pounds than 10,000 tons! That would be 20,000,000 (20 millions) pounds!!! A little bit high for something held on a swivel, isn't it? Would there be any reliable reference? Like a manufacturer specification, or a RR encyclopedia or something having some credibility?

EMD all the way!!! 20-645E3 wastes a lot of fuel to produce 3600HP but It's way better to me than the modern 710 engines. What about the SD50. As I've read, they have 16-645F engines that have a compresion ratio 18:1 so they produce 3500HP but the engine parts are under big stress so it leads to an early overhaul. Correct me if I'm not right.

@ohboy3622 5 лет назад
The sd50 was shit also for awhile. They had a lot of problems with electrical issues and wiring. After a lot of money in fixing the problems they weren’t that bad but still the 40-2 was much preferred because of reliablity. They also had engine issues early because of the higher rpm it was designed to run at.
@1575murray
@1575murray 5 лет назад
A lot of SD50s have been rebuilt and downgraded to SD40-2 specs to keep them running reliably. Also many SD45s and SD45-2s have been rebuilt with 16-645E engines effectively making them SD40s with larger fuel tanks.

can anyone explain how each of those engines can pull with equal horsepower, for example each trains engines will have different engine efficiencies' and thus if 1 engine is only providing say 98% of it's power compared to the other engines which might be the same power, more or less, then the most efficient engine will have too haul the less efficient engines as well as the freight..hope i've been clear in what i'm trying to convey..
@1jackdk
@1jackdk 4 года назад
All locomotives are putting out 100% of its horsepower no matter what they are and the make... They are all geared the same. So as an example, if you have a EMD SD45 as a lead unit of 3600 hp, and the second unit is a GE U28B which has 2800 hp, and then you place a older ALCO RS11 in the mix, which will add another 1800hp. Those three units amount to 8200 total horsepower. Now they figure in the tonnage of the train it has to pull, and the grades on the line. They know exactly how much total horsepower they need to move that train over the line. Hope this explains it and makes it a little clearer Mike... Thanks for watching...
