Been working with a large organisation for a number of years so sm trying to get away from the "house-style" I'm used to creating. Lots of really inspiring work here, thank you 🙂

At first seeing some of these impressive portfolios almost feels a bit intimidating because I'm not sure if I can get to that level BUT I have sent some of the examples to my personal contact SMEs whom I'm hoping to work with for my portfolio content and it really helps me talk to them about what we might be able to do :)

Don't feel discouraged! Progress beats perfection...and these projects / portfolios did not start at the point where you see them now. It takes a lot of feedback and iteration to get them to this point :).

Like some have stated here, they are intimidating looking - so professional and polished! What are most IDs using to make their portfolio look so dynamic and professional? Are they creating their sites from scratch or are they using something like Wordpress.
@DevlinPeckYT
@DevlinPeckYT 2 года назад
Don't feel intimidated! These portfolios underwent a lot of review cycles and feedback...they definitely didn't start like this :D. Many of the people in this showcase are using either SquareSpace or Webflow.

Hi Devlin, I was wondering usually how many years of experience is needed to enter into instructional design in a corporate setting?
@DevlinPeckYT
@DevlinPeckYT 2 года назад
Good question, Jing. You do not need any formal experience to break into the corporate instructional design space. Many of the people you see on the showcase are actually transitioning from non-ID roles. Here's a video for more info about how to land an ID role with no experience: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z9T_DExI8ow.html

Perhaps you can give me a few suggestions: I'm working on a Portfolio project to address "Email etiquette" in the workplace. I created a video to go over aspects of the message ( with the Email window front and center). A few things I'm struggling with: 1. How to make the video a little more engaging - I just have the Email window. I was thinking of throwing in a character and some background. 2. Readability: I recorded a video on my Mac Desktop with a Mail window. When I imported it into storyline the text was barely readable. I tried using the "Zoom Region" feature but it didn't work very well. I'm thinking I can design the entire video and an Email Window in Storyline? 3. What is a good application that is compatible with Storyline to design these things ( like drawings, diagrams, etc.) where I can easily import them into Storyline and preserve the original design? Not sure if it's ok to ask a for suggestions here, apologies if not. Thanks.
@DevlinPeckYT
@DevlinPeckYT 2 года назад
Hi Norbert! Thanks for asking, and I will try to point you in the right direction on some of these things :D. If anyone else has some insight, feel free to share! 1. Perhaps making it more interactive...let us decide what to include in the email and then showing us the consequences? How may people respond to our email if we don't follow good etiquette? Consequences like that will make it more engaging..but adding characters or other graphics that aren't tied strongly to the story may not add to the experience (and worst case, may detract from it). 2. You can edit your videos / clips in a tool like Camtasia or Premiere Pro and handling the zoom in there before bringing into Storyline. 3. You can use tools like Illustrator or InDesign to create graphics from scratch :D I hope that helps a bit!
@NDemanuele1
@NDemanuele1 2 года назад
@@DevlinPeckYT Yes it does! I did create a instructional video and was able to import it into storyline. I'll try to make a few tweaks as you stated.

thank you Devlin! my Qs is about micro learning! what is this exactly and is it useful now for ID work and portfolio? how can we find samples of microlearning in the portfolio that you present in your website! if yes, please let me know how?
@DevlinPeckYT
@DevlinPeckYT 2 года назад
Good question! My understanding is that microlearning is a bit of a buzzword, but it generally refers to learning in bite-sized chunks. So think short learning experiences that help people do very specific tasks (and are easy people to access right at the point of need). No good examples come to mind immediately as I am definitely more immersed in the scenario-based learning world :D. But maybe someone else will chime in here with some good perspective on or examples of microlearning.

@@ziziqadir4170 Good question! What are their goals? Speak to how your learning will help them achieve it. Is the learning experience relevant to their lives or jobs? How can you gain their attention? And what can you do to help them build their confidence during the learning experience? These things will all help with motivation :D

Thanks so much Devlin! Some of the portfolios you highlight on your website contain Storyline modules that are super-responsive and resize to fit the viewport. Any tips on how to achieve this?
@DevlinPeckYT
@DevlinPeckYT 2 года назад
Thanks for asking, Jason. Storyline cannot create truly responsive content, but the canvas will scale to fill the user’s screen by default (the aspect ratio stays the same across devices, though). You can use a tool like Rise to create actually responsive content 😃

I wonder…do or you or anyone else have any tips for those of us working for [cheap] employers that haven’t yet bought into e-learning? The field I’m in is VERY resistant to change, so the small strides I’ve made have only come via my ability to scavenge for cheap yet effective options like Payhip to design e-courses. I can’t afford the usual software IDs typically use, and I feel like I’m doing myself a disservice advertising my work so far.
