There are a lot of folks out there teaching things you RU-vid but very few offer actual, actionable, and meaningful insights and knowledge like you do. You clearly care about education and learning and you treat the RU-vid community as potential colleagues instead of potential sales. Thank you for what you do.
I feel like I'm doing an MBA with you Devlin. There is no end to what you can teach. Keep up the great work. I especially like the animation examples of how to make our e-learning more memorable.
I've landed my first edtech job after transitioning from teaching thanks to all the helpful tips you gave! Just finished my first week and I am thrilled
As a online lecturer found this very useful in guiding me through how to turn boring old MS Word word heavy docs into interactive sessions users can follow in their own time. Just starting out in the Articulate domain too, so need all the guidance I can get!
Thanks Colin, I’m glad that this will help. It definitely takes some getting used to, but using this process will help you create a really nice portfolio project (and break away from the information-heavy style). Let us know if you have any questions along the way.
This is like the perfect pitstop for anyone looking to get insights on the ID process. Or should I say quite some detailed insights. I am finally clearer with the action mapping approach after watching this video, thanks to your example. You're a game changer!
Thanks Simran. I really appreciate you taking the time to watch it all! And I'm glad it helped give some insight into how you can use action mapping. This isn't "strict" action mapping, but we definitely borrow some concepts from it :D
@@simrandhupar6755 Good question. I've seen people use PowerPoint, Figma, and Adobe Illustrator. You can even use Storyline if you don't get tempted to make anything interactive or build more than you need for the visual mockups :D
Dev, you're the GOAT! By far the best of your videos and that's saying a lot since your videos have been so helpful. After each one I watch I feel my imposter syndrome dwindling away. Thank you so much! Keep up the excellent work!
I landed a job of ID by answering what I learned from you Devlin. I am an engineer. Job starts in 4 weeks...gotta learn how to do IDing till then. I am so confident i have your lectures, i know I will pull it. Thank you sooooo much
I'm a recent graphic design grad and just landed my first ID role starting Monday. These lessons are extremely informative and this one in particular is stellar, providing the examples and breaking them down as a newcomer to this job title is a huge help so thank you for putting this out there! Could you point me in the right direction for information on other methods like scenario based solutions? Would love to get acquainted with them all to hit the ground running!
You're welcome, Kim! Thanks for supporting the content. And check out the Become an ID playlist here on the channel to learn more about other approaches :D
Hey Devlin, I can't thank you enough for this video. I am transitioning into ID and this is super helpful. I really needed to learn about process after going through the checklist in terms of theory and tech. Thank you!
I would love to meet yoy in person to shake your hand. I have just completed my first freelance client project. When I started, I had very limited knowledge on ID. I am soo happy to find this video as confirmation that I took the right steps. It is amazing that you described every step thar I took. I am glad to know that I am on the right track. Thanks 1000%
As always, this is well worth the time to watch. I'm so glad I ran into your content several months ago. I tried putting together a portfolio piece by building it directly in Storyline, but as you mentioned, I lost alot of time redoing and reiterating. How much easier it would have been if I had started with Adobe XD to build. Even better if I had started with a text based storyboard or a mind map to outline my thoughts. (In the process I learned alot about cool features of Storyline as I was trying to demonstrate my ability to use all of them in one project, but I'm not sure how coherent the finished piece was. I too would be interested in image packs.
We've all been there, Laura. It is tough to figure things out on your own (I even built some of my early client projects in Storyline directly...results in a lot of rework as change requests come in down the line). So yes, please learn from my mistakes, lol. This process irons out a lot of the inefficiencies and works really well for clients (I would seek approval on text-based storyboard, interactive prototype, and then final product). Finally, thanks for supporting the content. We're glad that you're here :)
This is a way detailed video, Devlin. And combined with other action mapping videos on your channel makes it a perfect combo. I would love to ask, what can be the possible observable actions for a knowledge-based problem?
Thanks Sejaal! And what do you mean by a knowledge-based problem? How would we know if someone has the knowledge or doesn't have the knowledge? What would they do differently? That's the line of questioning I would use to arrive at actions :D
Hey Devlin! Super grateful for your content. Would you possibly be willing to share your template for your Storyboard that you build in Google Docs? Yours has been the most logical layout that I've seen so far and I've been really struggling to create my own in a way that flows neatly.
Hi Devlin! Your videos have been such a huge help as I work to transition from education to instructional design. Thanks so much for what you do! You mention testing the prototype on multiple devices/browsers - how does that work? I would have to export and publish the prototype somewhere, right?
I'm happy to help, Nicole, and thanks for supporting the content. And yes, you can publish the course online with a service like Amazon S3, and then visit the link from multiple devices. You can learn how to publish to Amazon S3 with this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AutgRGiR3CQ.html
What are the norms regarding the information you need to source to create a course? What sources do you use? Do you need to cite the sources? What sources are deemed credible? I haven’t found anything on this. I would appreciate any insight.
Hey Mike! You generally work with a subject matter expert (or, if you're the SME, then it comes from your own experience). There also may be past training materials / documents from the team that you can work from.
@@DevlinPeckYT thanks for responding! What if you’re working from training materials and documents outside of your team’s. Do you need to give credit? And how would you do that?
Some great steps in here - will definitely be revisiting this video! Just wondering where everyone gets their characters from? Really struggled to find a good resource for happy/sad diverse characters
Hi Devlin. This is fantastic, thank you for great content! It's helping me refresh on topics I learned in my masters degree (you're a pro). What program did you use to produce this video?
Thanks for the wonderful content. I've been binge watching your channel for a while now. I have a quick question: if I master storyline 360 & rise, do I still need to learn other authoring/design tools? TIA
You're welcome! Thanks for the good question. It would help to know a video editor (like Camtasia or Premiere Pro) and also photo manipulation tools (like Photoshop and / or Illustrator).
Thanks! 👍 Devlin, is this necessary to apply and using all those detail that you mentioned in this video for every simple of work in my portfolio? - I mean all of samples that you shared in your website have applied this instruction by detail...? 2) I've seen some projects has a sample as an "job aid" in their portfolio, what exactly what they did? thanks
Great question. I suggest using this process for one project (the flagship project), and you can have smaller deliverables to bolster this. The benefit of showing off this process and creating a deliverable like this is that it shows off the full scope of your ID skills (especially in-demand ones like solving real-world problems with ID and using Articulate Storyline).
Thanks, Devlin for this video. I have a question, how to achieve that typing effect, which was there in one of the examples which you showed in the video. Is it animation or javascript is in the play?
@@DevlinPeckYT Interesting, whenever I tried to use the wipe effect I have not been successful in achieving that typing effect. :/ That is why I was wondering.
hi devlin! in so many job description they ask us that we should can add surveys, or gamification with educational content! do you have any suggestion regarding that? and I was wondering if how can I learn CSS, HTML5, or webpage design ASAP?
Awesome! Your videos have helped me so much over the past two years as an ID. Thanks to you, I have been improving my course creation process in my work as a full time ID and freelancer. Thanks Devlin!
As a online lecturer found this very useful in guiding me through how to turn boring old MS Word word heavy docs into interactive sessions users can follow in their own time. Just starting out in the Articulate domain too, so need all the guidance I can get!
This is an awesome video and one I'm sure I will return to watch again and again in the future! I really appreciated the tips you shared and also loved the great examples you chose to illustrate them. They are inspiring and also very helpful to put it all in context. Thank you, @Devlin!
Hi Devlin! Around 33:02 you said there's a full video on "that." Is there a video about tracing over elelements? Can you share the link to the video, please?
Devlin! Great video, thanks for the recommendation. Is the playlist live that you mentioned at the start of the video? Also, do you have content that shows how to integrate Vyond with a course, like you showed?
Thanks a bunch! And yes, the playlist is new (you've probably seen the videos), but it will be growing over time: ru-vid.com/group/PLDW3IzDXPIgpqOXZVz4m2ybKaaHNuMJTg
Super-engaging video, and love how you make action-mapping concrete with a real-world example. Just finished reading Map It, and this is helping the material stick! Much appreciated Devlin!
Appreciate you Devlin I've been learning from you for the past year. I've completed my first project as an intern and now have a second internship with an organization I plan to work for, it's a way to get my foot in the door.
I finally was able to get into this a bit. I've been enjoying it, and imagine I'll watch it a couple more times just for my sake. I'm curious, you said you were charging $25k USD for one of these 10-question scenarios, is that correct? What is your timeline/turnaround on something like that on average? I was shocked to hear you say $25k+ USD, to be honest. :P
Thanks Noah! And yes, that is correct :D. Timeline is generally around 3 months and generally takes around 40 hours or so of work on my end. And why shocked? You know I love project pricing, haha :D
@Devlin Peck Interesting, so you spend a total of 40 hours, do you outsource some of the work, then? I'm curious, since you said "on your end", or do you mean there is other work on the part of the client? And, yes, I know you love project pricing, and I definitely see why! Although, the stuff you create brings incredible value. So, now that I say it, I'm not sure why I was "shocked!" It was more just hearing $25,000+ USD. I was like, my god that's half my salary in 2021, you know? LOL! (And yes I had to switch from my professional account to my personal. I had no clue!)
@@nosh-kami Yes, I typically outsource some development and illustration (runs around $1k-2k). And the project could get done in a couple of weeks but you have to rely on SME availability and client review cycles. And with how much work you do I thought you'd be making 3 times that!! Haha. But I know you are happy with your company :D
Hi Devlin and all! I am a New Delhi-based curriculum developer. I specialize in elementary education and sociology of education and have been working with government organizations and NGOs for a couple of years. Now, I intend to switch to the profile of an instructional designer. I have been reading, watching videos and also intend to build a portfolio. However, I have three major queries. a) Should my portfolio samples be general or specific at this initial stage of the switch? In other words, should I restrict it to elementary education work samples or include samples that cater to the need of corporates, include other topics, etc.? b) Should I prepare for the role in terms of what industry needs or what I can offer? If both, how do I strike a balance between these two? c) Are South Asian people often viewed as ‘cheap labourers’, specifically in the freelance space? (I intend to work with people across the globe while residing in India.) I would highly appreciate it if you all could share your response to the above-given questions. Thanks in advance!
Hello, and good questions! I will do my best to answer: 1. You should try to cover a wider range. If all of your projects are related to elementary education, it may send the message that those are the types of roles you're aiming to work in. 2. Both! The process outlined in this video covers a lot of the bases that companies are looking for. 3. I am not sure about that. If you position yourself well and have a strong portfolio, then you will be able to demand premium rates.
great one! 2Qs come my mind, the sample of work "davidleisey" looks different and advanced, how he makes that and what tools he used, storyline or other tools? - my challenge now is about making mock up and using adobe XD, so how can we draw slide like storyline in adobe XD, in ease? thanks
Hi Sara. David actually did that with Articulate Storyline. It is very impressive…I thought he had used a tool like After Effects, but he did it all in Storyline. And check out the video about how to use Adobe XD for eLearning 😃
Would a scenario based eLearning experience come after an informational training so that the participant knows how to navigate the scenarios based on what they've learned?
With this approach, we bring people right into the action and let them "pull" information (instead of pushing it on them). That being said, many clients / teams do weave together a mix of info-based and scenario-based like you mentioned. Good question!
Hi Devlin! Thank you for sharing such valuable information! What are your favorite collaborative tools and applications to use for designing your prototypes, storyboards, and moments of delight?
Devlin, where did you get these graphics ? Did you create them yourself? I like these "drawing", kinda old school cartonized effects. The ones you showed in Adobe XD (backgrounds and characters). Is this maybe a set of graphics from a specific platform? Would love to know.
@@bertalankoeles Great question. These are custom graphics that I worked with an illustrator to create. We are actually working on some character packs that I will share with the community :)
@@DevlinPeckYT That would be great! I saw this style a lot in your website picures too. I really like this style but not so easy to reproduce. There are many apps (mostly paid) that can add some "brush" effects and more, but not really this one. For some cartoonized projects I would use that quite well, looking forward to your video on that! :)
Hi Devlin! Thank you for putting out such valuable content. Do you have an alternative for articulate storyline for starters? It costs $999 and may be a big outright investment if you are just starting.
As a transitioning teacher, I am learning so much from your videos. Do you have a timeline you can please share to show approximately how much time you spend on each phase of project you are working on for a client from start to finish?
Great Video! I really liked the 'email collaboration' example at the end. I'm curious what it takes to design the functionality/animation? I envision something similar in a project I want to create but not sure how to turn it into reality!...LOL. I suppose that is the challenge of creating engaging, memorable, Elearning! Thanks
Hey hey! Not at the moment outside of the bootcamp but I can definitely put something together. I do offer a different text-based storyboard in the storyboard template video here on the channel :D.
I think that Aleks got hers from Freepik and then customized as needed. I also work with an illustrator and we’re creating character packs for the community 😃
Thank you, I am preparing for a Learning Experience Designer role. If I get selected, I would be happy to financially contribute a little out of my happiness & gratitude.
@@DevlinPeckYT Thank you so much Devlin. I need to prepare a instructional training content and feeling a bit overwhelmed. Its my career transition. Can I please have a 1:1 with you or at least could you guide me to a playlist that covers this part specifically as in with real time example on Storyboard, Articulate 360 and all that?
