Please, please, please, if you don't like this, stop complaining, just go somewhere else. Halidon music is doing us all a great service by supplying this wonderful must absolutely free. If you can do better, make your own programs and shut up. I can guarantee no one can make up a thirteen hour program that will satisfy everyone but at least Halidon has tried to make a lot of us happy. Quityourbellyaching!

The 'problem', if you will, is that Beethoven holds a place in music equivalent to that of Shakespeare in dramatic literature and lyric poetry: there'll probably never be another. And neither were isolated savants but rather represented the acme of 'genius clusters', like say, Leonardo, Botticelli, and Raphael in 15th Century Florentine painting, and several dramatists and artists in 5th Century Athens, etc. For music, late 18th & 19th century Vienna is such a cluster, as was late16th and early 17the century London for drama and poetry. Genius begets and inspires genius. Not just the symphony but in the string quartet, solo piano music, and the concerto, Beethoven set standards that his successors, especially the immediate German ones, could asymptotically approach but never quite surpass. You neglected to call Brahms' 1st Beethoven's 10th.

Wonderful list, and yet ..... I could list many more symphonies by the same or other composers, some perhaps less known, but for me equally great. It's all a matter of taste, and taste is personal. In no particular order: R. Glière, 3rd Symphony; H. Hanson, 2nd Symphony; Antonio José, Sinfonia castellana; A. Dvorak, 8th Symphony; J. Brahms, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Sympohony; R. Schumann, 3rd and 4th Symphony; Symphonies by F. Mendelssohn, J. Sibelius, E. Edgar, R.V. Williams, S. Prokofiev, A. Borodin.
