_______________ 20 Hacks to INSTANTLY Fix Snare Drum Ring | Stephen Taylor Drum Lesson --
If you don't subscribe I'll steal all of your cymbals: bit.ly/2AyH1Fb
Snare drum ring...it can be a good thing or a bad thing. Sometimes a little snare drum ringing in the drum mix is nice. But if your snare drum is ringing too much, you need to dampen it for sure. Nothing will ruin a snare drum sound more than a weird tone coming off of it in the form of a ring. Disclaimer: I'm actually a big fan of snare drum ring when it's appropriate. But it's not always wanted or needed. So, here are 20 ways that you can dampen your snare drum to help control the ringing.
Leave a comment and let me know which way sounds the best to you?
Btw, in this demo I use a Tama Starclassic Bubinga Snare with an Aquarian Hi-Velocity drum head.

I agree with you that ring works well where appropriate. For example, Chad Smith from RHCP uses some ring in his snare and it compliments the rythm even more. Stadium Arcadium is a perfect example of how a bit of ring can subtly enhance some of the tightest drumming I've heard on a record. And I believe that the Aquarian Studio dampener ring sounded best, but the clue is in the name that it's gonna give you studio quality. And for a quality product, you're still looking within the price range of your average Evans head. Great video btw. It was great to see how such cheap and easy methods at home can create a variety of sound for a head.

Completely agree with you mentioning Chad Smith. A great example of ring on a snare is Jazz (We’ve Got) - A Tribe Called Quest. Such a chill song with good flow. The ring is so subtle yet so fitting.

Another great video. This is something I struggle with on a daily basis. Too much ringing and overtones will drive you nuts. It’s finding the right amount .of muffling. . I have also come to the conclusion a lot of it has to do with the room that your playing in. Different rooms will give different sounds. These are some great ideas and solutions. Thanks as always

noferblatz yea, it’s def a different sound altogether when dampening. None good or bad, just different. I’ve been on projects where I hated the snare sound but the engineer and group had something they were going for. And most of the time it comes out sounding fine.

I have a 6.5 x14 Gretsch Brooklyn USA chrome over steel snare drum with a G1 Evans coated batter snare head. It’s a beautiful drum and one piece of Meinl’s Drum Honey placed at 12 o’clock on the batter is perfect. I also have it tuned within the mid to high range which gives the rim shot a great crack. Drum Honey sounds great IMO.
@paulknight6083

I like the "one piece of gaffer tape" best. I'd prefer moon gel, but you need to put it closer to the rim.

Yea, the closer to the rim the more overtones you retain. I was trying to keep the placement central for all of the options.

I use the Aquarian Studio Rings on my snare, tom, and floor tom. I have been considering going back to moon gels though. Sometimes you can her a slight ring from the studio rings vibrating against head. That's usually after a long time of use though and they dont sit perfectly flat on the head.
@Mudge07
@Mudge07 5 лет назад
I use Remo ‘O-Rings’ or Moongel on all batter heads. However as I ‘I’ve just added a Pearl, Ian Paice, Sensitone snare with in-built damper then the options have increased. I prefer clear heads on reso’s and an Ambassdor (X) coated on the snare.

Great timing, I am currently working on this subject. The hands were funny but ok. The towel was to much. The moon gel and rings sounded good. I guess the sound we are looking for is as unique as our personalities. I'm not big on the ring but at the same time I don't want to choke the sound completely. I have a Remo Ambassador Powerstroke 3 with a Big Fat Snare Drum Ring on top of it. The snare wires are another tough one to get set for my preferred sound.

This video is exactly what I needed to see right before I record drum tracks for my band's new album. I have a little too much ring in the snare. I might have to pick up some sticky hands or a BFSD - Steve's Ring. How much are sticky hands these days from those dispensing machines? 25 or 50 cents?
@davidbrockett1
@davidbrockett1 5 лет назад
Double sided sticky foam works the best if you have a white drum head take off the green cover on both sides so it blends in and if a black drum head leave the face side on so it does the same it's cheap and can cut to any size you wish
@rafgomez333

Wide open sounds better, at least your snare with that particular tuning. I personally like my snare wide open, but some times circumstances call for some muffling. And there is another way to do so that I came up with while playing at an event with a snare that's too "ringy" for the venue -- I did not have another snare or any of those products, so I had to come up with something myself. I placed one of those card board drum stick cases (the cardboard things that pair drum sticks together -- I do not know what they are called), and used about an inch or two of scotch tape I borrowed from the venue to tape it to the snare ring on the top of the snare (in between the high tom and the hi-hats), placing the cardboard case on top of the drum head and loosely taped on one side from the inside thereof to the drum head (but leaving extra tape lose so it could rebound -- this tape just so that the cardboard case would not fly out of the drum head); that way the cardboard case would float on the drum head whenever I hit it, but muffling it a bit it on the rebound. That gave it the perfect balance to still keep it as an open snare but without the extra unwanted ring. I've tried this method a few more times in different circumstances, with great results; and my favorite part is that it's free haha. You should try this method; I've tried many of the other methods you showed, and of all the ones I've ever used, this was by far the one that produced the best sound (at least in the circumstances in which I have tried it).

Great video, quick question on techniques. I notice you play the snare similar to how I have been playing lately in this groove. Striking as close to center as possible and also hitting rim shots with the tip very close to center. I’ve noticed many other drummers when I see there used sticks show heavy wear and cracking (from rimshot) further down towards the base of the stick. Meaning they are striking there rimshots deeper on the stick with the tip past center. Any thoughts anybody? I know there’s no real right or wrong but would love to hear people’s opinions

Moon gel and two pieces of gaf tape in my opinion were the best but I like a dry snare the old head trick sounded pretty cool too

I need advice.. I just started using acoustic drums instead of electric drums at my church again. I am using dampening rings on each drum as well as moon gels on each drum. It helps a lot. On the ride cymbal I'm using gaff tape on the top. I thought that I probably should have tried putting a small piece on the bottom near the bell instead. Something I have to experiment with. The singers in front of me didn't complain when I asked them if anything was too loud. Right now we don't have a drum shield but I'm afraid of the issues it would cause me to have one. I think if we get one I would have to wear the right isolation headphones, have a channel mixer to hear all the instruments and drum mics. Ofcourse that will cost a lot of money and its a smaller church. I don't think we need all that. I'm just afraid of all of it eventhough I have experienced playing drums in a cage with headphones and a mixer. I have the cheapest Shure in-ears that hurt my ears after a while and I still have not been able to hear how they would sound while playing on an acoustic set. I feel like its going to block out the tone and fullness of the sound. And if I don't wear any ear protection with a drum shield it will probably slowly damage my hearing. How do I convice the worship leader and pastor not to buy a drum shield because it could ruin the sound without the proper equipment?

My 70's slingerland drumset has enternal tone controls and I do use them sometimes, depends on the room and acoustics.

Dude tape and paper towel and then tape and paper both sounded so much better than some of the bits actually made for this :P

I don't remember how or where my uncle had gotten the stuff/made it himself, but from what I remember he had gotten.... oh man, I don't think I ever was told or learned for myself what the stuff is called, but that stuff that, the best example I can give is, back in the 80's video cameras would either come with, or have carrying cases, and it would have this stuff inside with the camera's cutout to keep it from moving around freely - I keep wanting to call it some kind of "foam" but that's not right (I don't think....). Anyway, he had gotten some pads I think, cut some rounds/circles out of the material, and glued those to the underside of his drum heads. (It might be the same material as those pad things used for sound-proofing a room, but even so, I don't know what that stuff is or made of)
