Enjoyed this informative video very much! Many thanks. All your plants look beautiful. My dining room has two floor to ceiling windows facing West plus a box bay double floor to ceiling window facing North. The two single windows on the box bay have an East and a West window. I live in Charlotte, NC. All the plants in this room stay so happy. I would love to use this as a plant room only but I would be without a dining room. 😊. I have Agleonemas in a a North double window upstairs and they couldn’t be happier. Light exposure is important for all plants but sometimes they surprise us with thriving in less than perfect exposures. 🙂. Here’s to plants that don’t have to have the best piece of real estate in your house ! 🥰🪴👏

The room I keep all my plants in is North facing and I have one small window, I def envy your big windows! I have alocasia, calathea, fiddle leaf Bambino, adansonii, deliciosa, coffea arabica, peperomia orbifolia, global green pothos, Golden pothos, marble Queen pothos, neon pothos, pearls and Jade pothos, syngonium, elephant palm, Aloe, a little birds nest snake plant, orchids, African violets etc... I don't have grow lights but do have two led lamps in the darker corners and everyone seems happy. If i move everyone closer to the window I don't bother with lamps until winter! I think that BC I buy baby plants, usually 4 inch pots, that they adjust far more quickly than an established plant that's been in greenhouse conditions for much longer. At least that's my working theory 🤷🏼‍♀️ I am planning for a regular fiddle leaf fig as well and in the lighting research I've done it sounds like I'm well within the requirements as far as my light meter app goes. I plan to get a young one not only for budget but BC I genuinely believe that its easier to acclimate. The rest of the house actually does have better lighting however I get cranked at for opening curtains BC of glare 🤣 so the arguments aren't worth it! So I guess it doesn't really matter which way your Windows face if you don't open the blinds or curtains daily! 🤷🏼‍♀️

Lol! Yea definitely have to be able to actually let the light in. I feel like a house that faces southeast would provide the best lighting like EVERYWHERE in the house for plants. I’ll have to put that on me list of requirements for the next house I own 😂

Hello I'm new to plants just started about 3 months ago, I'm up to 36 so far tho. I seem to be doing better as a good since use to have a black thumb that killed anything green lol.... So my question is , as u say led light bulbs seem to work fine eah ? I have a South facing big living room window that I basicly have all my plants in but I'd love to build some shelves on other walls but I'm worried about not enough light. Would this still be ok ? I was thinking maybe getting a nice talk lamp and putting an led light bulb in it. U really am trying to stay away from having to get the grow lights and all that type of set up
@AlohaPlantLife
@AlohaPlantLife 2 года назад
@@erinjoy5625 I’ll let Marisa answer you about her specific experience she mentioned with her LED lights, but as for the shelves, it just depends how far from the window they are and what types of plants you put on them. If you watch my plant styling video you can see the shelves I have on a wall in my living room next to southern facing windows. That might give you a better idea of what might work in your space. Hope this helps!

I know this is from a year ago, but I've just seen it, and I'm glad to see a video about people with low light rooms. It sounds like you have some rooms that have better light, but my home is all fairly low light, and with the help of grow lights and choosing species carefully you can still enjoy houseplants. My main question was why on Earth you'd have those blinds up, when nobody can really see in much from across the street. I removed all my curtains and blinds long ago, in favour of houseplants! They block so much light 💚
@AlohaPlantLife
@AlohaPlantLife Год назад
Oh I leave the blinds pulled up pretty much 24/7, but they definitely help better control the light for filming on the rare occasions I film in that room💚

I always appreciate how well thought out and articulate your videos are. This one gave me a lot to think about as I have a very low light home, which, when I bought it 10 years ago was a plus because I live in central Florida and having low light means less heat. Now that I’m a (very novice) plant enthusiast, it’s not as ideal. In fact, every plant I have is living outside on my east facing lanai and I’m not sure what I’ll do come winter time.

I know how it is. You start looking at your house through completely different eyes once you start getting into houseplants. I've got a list of "must haves" for my next house and half the list is requirements for my plants and not me lol

Many thanks for this enjoyable video. Good tips and information throughout! Good recommendations on plants that can be placed in North facing windows. I have three Aglaonemas in North facing windows and they push out new growth even in Winter. Take care! 👌🪴🥰

Speaking of Syngoniums and Diffenbachias, both plants we currently own, great plants. However, both are targets for thrips. Inspect both plants well every time you water them. I have had to treat both of ours a few times. Both have recovered just fine, but be mindful as well. The ZZ Plant we also own, the basic green variety as well as the Raven ZZ, excellent plants, low maintenance and of all these plants I have been speaking about live in our downstairs, main level which are near or adjacent to a South/Southeast facing window. We live in Calgary Alberta Canada.

Hi Drea, 8 months .. ok, if I'm lucky you'll read this 😁 I would really love to see people grab a Lux-meter when they talk about light and houseplants. For me numbers are much more clear and easy to understand. Of course our houses, rooms, windows, seasons are different, but if you say "give it 5000 LUX" i wouldn't put it in a spot with 500 ... Anyway, thanks a lot for sharing your experiences 🥀
@AlohaPlantLife
@AlohaPlantLife Год назад
I actually use one in another one of my videos to demonstrate just how much light solar window screens block because it’s a crazy amount. However, LUX honestly isn’t even the best measurement for plants when it comes to lighting. I think I’ll do a future video going into it more since it is also important for people to know about when choosing grow lights.

Philodendron Micans, Scindapsus pictus argirius, different pothos varieties, monstera. Snake plants prefer full sun. I grow mine outside. ZZ plant can tolerate shade but it would grow better in bright light. Rubber tree can tolerate some shade but it likes full sun. Sheflere can tolerate shade but it likes full sun. I would say philodendron Micans is the best bet for shade. And it looks good. If exposed to direct light leafs become blitched so you may want to pull it back from the window if you don't like this look.

Excellent video My apartment is north facing and I have even bigger windows but less light since the apartment above me has a cantilever balcony which blocks a lot of light that could have entered to my apartment. My apartment is in ground level the contractor (new building) planted a tree beneath that cantilever balcony, I had it removed a replanted in another area of the building otherwise I would have been living without natural light. What’s your favorite beer?

Yep, my house only has north windows so thats all my plants get lol. My monstera even puts out fenestrated leaves, contrary to what the sunlight nazis would believe 😄

Same here. Our apartment has only two well-lit big northern facing windows, we have here about 40 plants in the windows and within 1 meter away from the window (but not further) and all live happily without grow lights. We even have some succulents (haworthia that blooms every year, echeveria etc.) someone gave us and they are ok - slowly growing, but looking healthy (however I know they would enjoy more light - but we don´t have that). It is true that we chose lower-light tolerant plants. It´s been two years and everyone is ok :-)

Thank u! I have been trying 2 keep all my plants in my South facing kitchen windows but have found that my Syngoniums, Scindapsis, Philos & Pothos hate those windows. I have many large windows in my home but the South & East windows r the ones I've tried 2 put my plants in. I'm gonna start moving them around & c if I can open up some space in my South & East windows & utilize my West & North windows more. I'm a realitively new subscriber but I Love ur channel! ❣ So, BTW, would my succulents enjoy my west windows as much as they do my South windows?
@AlohaPlantLife
@AlohaPlantLife 2 года назад
Your welcome! It depends on the succulents and if anything is blocking your west window outside. I originally had my echeveria and graptoveria succulents in a west window but they started getting stretched out because they wanted more light. So I moved them to a south window and they’ve been fine since. But I have a neighbor in a 2 story house outside my west windows which blocks the light part of the day.

My philodendron micans is going crazy with growth in my north kitchen window. I put my mango and confetti syngoniums about 3 feet from a south facing window and they seem to love it. I have a philodendron de ja vu that. Still haven’t figured out the light. It’s currently in an east facing window. Any thoughts?
@AlohaPlantLife

East window should be good is anything obstructing the window outside?
@liteweightpup2561
@liteweightpup2561 2 года назад
@@AlohaPlantLife Nope. Lots of sun till almost noon but less during winter. I’m in Wisconsin so the sun is a little lower than you😎
@AlohaPlantLife
@AlohaPlantLife 2 года назад
@@liteweightpup2561 So this is one of those philodendron that I mentioned in my upright philodendron video has been re-classified as a Thaumatophyllum. I actually own one Thaumatophyllum and it’s been living directly in a north facing window for the entire time I’ve owned it which is almost a year now. So you could try north. Otherwise maybe a southern window but just be mindful how close it is and make sure it doesn’t look like it’s getting any kind of leaf burn.

Pretty much any type of Epipremnum aureum. Non-variegated, small heart-leaf philodendron are also an option, such as philodendron cordatum, philodendron lemon lime, or philodendron micans
