Here’s mine. I need distilled water for my CPAP machine. One gallon of distilled purchase at the grocery is $1.40 and I need 1 - 2 per week. I instead of purchasing ad infinitum from the grocery I bought a distilled water machine off of Amazon for $75 and now I make my own it paid for itself very quickly. 😊

Something I learned from a RU-vid video is to reuse ziplock baggies. Just wash them out with dish soap and hot water, let them air dry and reuse as needed.

This tip is a good reminder. You can also wash aluminum foil and certain wax paper. I reuse the bags from crackers, cereals etc. Cut the seam to make them lie flat. These are thick enough to be washed and reused.

Being widowed for over 20 years I have learned to do many things myself. I have saved hundreds replacing toilets and fixing frozen, burst water lines to my barns. I cut my own fire wood, garden, and raise chickens and goats. Flat tire on the mower, yep I fix it myself. I use many of the same things you do to save money. I love sewing and make a lot of my clothes and aprons. Right now I an searching for affordable insulated curtains to help with the winter cold and the extreme heat we get here in the Texas summers.

A big way we save money is to not buy brand new vehicles. Instead we buy nice reliable used and keep up on their regular maintenance. Occasionally we’ve had to pay big repairs bills but the money we save by not paying $600-$700 mthly car payments saves us thousands.

We're married 53 years and my husband has never gone to a barber in all that time. I watched a hairdresser cut a man's hair and copied 'how to do it'. Saved us bundles over the 53 years. For Memorial Day that we're celebrating today, Sunday, because Monday is supposed to be rainy. My grown children and grandchild are coming and I made potato salad, deviled eggs, baked beans, and will grill hotdogs and hamburgers. For desert I made a chocolate cake in a 9" x 12" pan with homemade peanut butter icing. Happy Memorial Day!

I have been hanging laundry outside to dry for many years. As I get older I find it harder to lift the heavy baskets of we clothes and bend over to get them out of the basket. A few years ago we purchased a metal laundry cart. I can easily pull a load of wet clothes out and don't have to bend over to hang them up. I figure this has saved me a lot of doctor and chiropractor bills!

Since it’s May, I’ve been harvesting my strawberries and rhubarb. My neighbor has a huge rhubarb plant and allowed me to harvest it. In return, I baked him rhubarb bread, rhubarb cake, and sent him a jar of strawberry rhubarb jelly. It always pays to ask and give something back in return. In the fall another neighbor allows me to harvest apples which I turn into all types of items. I always return the kindness with a some baked goods. My newest frugal endeavor is regrowing veggie scraps. I took the root ends of a small bunch of green onions, stood them up in a jelly jar with water over the roots. Every other day I drained the water and added fresh tap water. (We have well water) These onions went crazy in my sunny kitchen window! They have grown out to nearly the full size of the original bunch in less than a week. After I use the onions, I’ll try to get another bunch from the same roots. My next experiment is to put the root end of a celery bunch into a pot of dirt to see what I can get. Frugal is fun!!

Its not a whole cabbage - but its fresh cabbage leaves. Also bok choy bases grow fully and beautifully just either sit on the dirt in a pot or just press it into the soil just a bit. 😊

We spent Memorial Weekend 1994 in Indianapolis. We are English, but my husband worked for Penske Racing at the time at we had a subsidised trip that weekend. I urge all your subscribers to take advantage of situations like this. It is one of my treasured memories as my husband became disabled less than 10 years later and life didn’t turn out as we planned. I don’t encourage irresponsible spending, but saving and spending to make those memories. It’s hard to think that this was 30 years ago as the memories are so vital. Even having two people being travel sick either side of me on a transatlantic flight! Being frugal allows us to afford these opportunities and they mean so much in the later stages of life. Sorry to be so long winded, but I feel this was important to share as an important point of frugality 🙏🏻

After doing that a few times I decided to save up and research what would work best for us. About 10-12 years ago (?) I waited for a really good set to go on sale (usually closer to $750) for about $200. I was delighted to be able to buy it and they still get used daily. Two additional savings tips: (1) Cleaning products. Some manufacturers want you to buy a special product to clean their items but often a simple mixture of Dawn, vinegar and water or Castile soap and water does the trick. I know these items don’t work on everything and one should research it first. (2). Insect sprays or garden sprays. I use a spray bottle of water and peppermint oil or water and peppermint Castile soap to help keep ants, flies and other annoying pests away from the house or in my garden.

I taught both my boys to trim trees too so now the savings will go on long after I am able to do it. I also taught my boys how to clean the gutters and some simple gardening. If we get good Iwill get a food saver too, so thanks. I mended my own gate with tools and spare screws and this year bought an electric dethatcher on sale. It was less than hiring a company, so next year that job will be free / less manual work. I use simple supplies to repaint walls. I have the same sewing machine from 1986 and can mend many things and do sew a bit, which saves money on hemming dress pants and other simple alterations. Converting pants to shorts was useful and cheap for growing boys. I’ve also made curtains and quilts in the past and made pillow cases for camping from old sheets. I made my own all purpose cleaner and use forgotten shampoos to freshen up the bathrooms. I cook for 3 meals at a time, saves time and electricity. I use spices to make simple lower cost meals taste very good, so we have those more often and the boys eating a lot doesn’t break my grocery budget. I could also go on, but that’s a lot so stopping!😅

The food saver has saved me so much money. I’m able to buy a bigger amount of meat when on sale , then divide into amounts we’d use at one time. We have a Roku & only have internet cable so we pay less than $90. Drying things on a rack during the summer instead of using the dryer. Prepping meals & meal planning weekly.

I have used henna in my hair for 30 years. I bought a travel soft hood dryer for about $30. The henna, one box for $6, does my shoulder length hair at least 4 times. So many great tips! A generator is on my list. I live in a neighborhood of 100 y.o. houses with many old trees. More than once I have had to throw out food from my refrigerator and freezer due to multi-day power outages. Very painful but can't risk unsafe food. Since the stroke, my handwriting with my non-dominant hand is terrible, I track expenses on a spreadsheet. I am also a big fan of the ceiling and tabletop fans, all year around. My dear friend and I are both big fans of the Sally Hansen Quick Dry top coat. We get occasional pedicures at a beauty school and bring the top coat so we don't ruin our toes. And a good cup of coffee brewed at home is the way to go! Thank you, and God bless the military service people who have made the ultimate sacrifice so we can be free!

More great tips! I’m going to see my mom and dad over the weekend and I’m bringing a cherry crisp dessert. My mom is making steak on the grill. Yum! 😋Another tip I thought of. Before buying a specialty appliance like an instant pot or air fryer or ice cream maker, etc, see if you can borrow a friend’s, use it a few times and see if it is something you really want to invest in. So many people buy stuff they think “oh I’ll totally use this” and then it ends up going into a closet to collect dust after being used 1 or 2 times. Such a waste. So if you have a friend or family member who has the product, ask them if they’d be willing to let you try theirs and if you use and feel it is worth it, then ok, buy one. But maybe you use it and go “eh it’s not worth it for me.” And if you can’t borrow the item, ask friends who have bought one to tell you how often they use theirs, for what purposes, how much room does it take up, etc, before buying.

Autumn here in Australia and wherever I walk I take a bag to collect kindling for my wood fire, pine cones as fire starters and late fall fruit. Always rake autumn leaves and compost ready for spring. Pruned fruit tree branches make great support sticks for peas. Last thing at night I boil my kettle and fill the thermos for overnight or early morning drinks like a cup of tea, saves reboiling . Citrus is abundant now so making my own marmalade and giving lots away. Made pesto today with garden greens and herbs to substitute for basil, delicious. Frosty mornings here require warm slippers and cosy dressing gown, saves on heating as the afternoons are mild so no need to heat house all day. All empty rooms are closed off so keep heat in the rooms I live in. Have set up a trickle charger for my car battery to prevent it going flat in the cold weather…. A good investment!!! Most of my garden is established with growing plant cuttings , saving lots of money . Plant labels made from plastic yogurt cartons cut in strips, last forever!!

Call your cable company and ask for the price on the least expensive internet that is not advertised. Yes, they have unadvertised cheaper price but few people know to ask for it. If they claim they don't have one tell them that the plan your on is unsustainable for your budget and you really need to have something cheaper. Usually they will lower the price even if it's for a yr but hey it saves you money. Never hurts to ask 👍

An electric mattress pad cover does wonders for comfort with a down turned furnace thermostat. Layering a microfiber blanket or throw next to your body and under a tighter weaved top sheet helps trap body heat next to your body. Conversely, lzher yiur blankets differently in the summer and pit that microfleece blanket on top. An old school, summer coverlet consisted of a flannel and a cotton sheet side typically sewn together around the edges and quilt ties every so often in the center. This can be done all by hand.

Same with lunches either leftovers or sandwhich and soup. Ceiling fans always running. Love having our generator too. Tinted our windows, added darking blinds and beautiful thick curtians. Cast iron and couple pots of stainless steel, plus nordic ware and glass bakeware. When buying tools we prefer to get brands that have a lifetime warranty. Basic older model washing machine with an agitator which was made to last a lifetime plus my husband can fix anything! The machine cleans clothes better, no sensors tondeal with and wenalso have the matching dryer but we use folding drying racks, retractable laundry line for winter time and clothelines outside for summertime.Music on the square in our town is free, just take a blanket and picnic basket and hangout with everyone.
