I own 15 of the 20. You should do some more of these lists. Perhaps 20 “must have albums” from a particular decade or a specific genre. I’d like to know what albums you’re listening to that were released in the 21st century.

His stuff crosses from being serious to funny and back again so much... only Thelonious Monk was more variable in attitude and temperment. Ah Um is the go to beginning for Mingus, but my favorite of his is the very unique The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady.

The lists are rather "English" centered; here are some other recomendations: Jacques Brel: Olympia 64 (if only for the song 'Amsterdam', the intensity is rarely topped by any other musician or group) Serge Gainboug: Bonnie And Clyde (What the French call Yéh Yéh) Magma: Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandöh (if you want to get into the 'Zeuhl' side of prog) Neu: Neu! (Krautrock classic) Kraftwerk: Autobahn or Trans Europa Express (well, the pioneers of almost all things electronic) Can: Tago Mago (Krautrock classic) Ennio Morricone: A Fistful of Dollars (Per un Pugno Di Dollari) or Il Buono, Il Brutto, Il Cattivo (The Good, The Bad and The Ugly) Os Mutantes Os Mutantes (Tropicalia/Psych) Various Tropicália Ou Panis Et Circencis (one of the (if not the) first album(s) documenting the Tropicalia movement with a.o. Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, etc) And some that not have made the cut (yet?) The Sonics: Here Are The Sonics (before The Stooges, MC5 and others there were the Sonics; Garage Rock/Protopunk) The Wailers: Catch A Fire (Reggae) Charles Mingus: Ah Um (Post Bop) Sonic Youth: Daydream Nation John Coltrane: Giant Steps or My Favorite Things (Post Bop, Giant Steps are originals, My Favorite Things are standards, an easier way to get into Coltrane) Alice Coltrane: Journey in Satchidananda (Spiritaul Jazz at its finest) Jaco Pastorius: Jaco Pastorius (landmark album, if only for reimagening the role of the bass) JB'ss: Doing It To Death (Funk) Sun Ra: Space Is The Place (for those who want to get into far out jazz) Pharoah Sanders: Karma (Spiritual jazz) The Specials: The Specials AKA (Ska)

Oh, those Sonics. The grandpappies of grunge. I remember having the telly on at work one Sunday evening, way back before the digital revolution rendered the set obsolete, and I was waiting for a football game to end so I could see what 60 Minutes planned to serve up. As I was walking past, between the conference room and the open common area, all of a sudden "Have Love ... Will Travel" came blasting out at me, and I froze -- first confirming to myself that, indeed, I was hearing who I thought I was hearing, and then wondering who in the ad world had discovered The Sonics. Now when I hear them on some ad or another, I just chuckle to myself a little -- spread the mighty word, sisters and brothers.

All of those records are great!! What tickled me was when you held up "Let It Be" by the Replacements. You took me back to a day in 1984 that was my best single trip to a record store. On the same receipt were "Let It Be", Husker Du's "Zen Arcade," and "Double Nickles on the Dime" from the Minutemen. A glorious, life changing day for this old boy.

Great channel mate. I have 2 original vinyl pressings of Jo Jo Gunne featuring Jay Ferguson from Cali band Spirit. My favourite is their first self titled album from 1972 and the second one is Bite Down Hard from 1973 with keyboard added. Then they recorded with the Asylum label. After a few ordinary follow up albums the band broke up in 1975. Great early California hard driving bluesy rock with no frills from a band formed in the wake of the Led Zep tours of the US. ''Big Chain'' is a remix of their first album after they reformed in 1992 and recorded the remix in 2005 with Blue Hand recording label....for my taste it was slightly over produced and lacked the rawness of the '72 original but still a tasty LP. I was lucky to get them back in the '70's as I live in Australia. Cheers from Oz.

Richard and Linda Thompson's "Shoot Out the Lights" has many characteristics of an essential collection item. First, it's a great album. It was recorded when the Thompsons' marriage was breaking up and has an amazing balance of beauty and tension. Second, it has an interesting press/print history and many variations exist. Third, it's an excellent introduction to bootleg collecting--many of the songs on the album were originally engineered Gerry Rafferty. Those recordings were never officially released and have a much different character than the official versions.

Lets put the record straight: Rodriguez was just as big in Australia and New Zealand. South Africa did not discover him alone. He even recorded a live album in Australia back in the seventies. It's on RU-vid. I'd also like to mention two other artists that most, not all, but most American missed, back in the 70's. That's J J Cale. He was huge in Australia, everybody had one or two of his albums in their collection. The other was Tim Buckley's album, "Greeting from LA." A bulletproof, flawless album.

Excellent list, Dillon. Damn, dude. I was gonna say The Replacements too! I’m fortunate enough to own a 1st press NM copy of American Beauty still in the shrink. It may not be super valuable, but it’s one of the gems of my collection just due to the fact that I’ve never seen a cleaner copy and love The Dead, but also love punk and jazz too. Ya can’t pigeon yourself into one genre of music, cuz you’ll just miss out on too much! Dillon, are you familiar with The Dukes of the Stratosphere? It’s actually one the band, XTC’s many aliases. I’d definitely classify it “pop psych”, but it came out in the late 80’s (can ya still even call it that?), but it could’ve easily come out in the 60’s. I’d never heard of em before, but I came across a copy of their second album signed by the singer, Andy Partridge. The guy I bought that collection of like 3K records from is a close friend of Andy’s, so it obviously makes total sense. I’ll be in touch with you soon, Dillon, cuz I’m sure you’d be interested in some of the more collectible albums I’ve come across, and I’m sure you’ve got some I’d love to own too. 🎶👍🔊🙂 Thanks for the excellent vid, man! Great choices.

Man, your channel is the dopest out there. Only discovered it two days ago, got so much great music I've never heard to check out thanks to you, love the diversity and open minded approach. I'm deep into Love, Forever Changes at the moment, got Karen Dalton, Judee Sill, all the blues mentions, Television and more on deck. I'm a jazz musician and jazz specialist, and i'd like to recommend a few lesser known works from after the music's golden era that seem right up your alley - 1) Clifford Jordan - Glass Bead Games 2) Ahmad Jamal - The Awakening 3) Bobby Hutcherson - Total Eclipse (and everything else by him on Blue Note). And in case you don't know it, a stone classic from Brazil that Stands toe to toe with anything by the Beatles, Zeppelin, Floyd, Bowie, etc: Milton Nascimento & Lo Borges - Clube Da Esquina, psychedelic masterpiece. Thanks for these videos, found out about people and groups I'd never heard of and went looking for. If they caught my attention I was happy to find and buy the CD, often more affordable. Haven't collected records since the 1980s, but still have all my old Vivyl. My most prized record is "Blind Joe Death" which I was able to get John Fahey to sign for me. He asked me what I wanted him to write, I said "what ever" which is exactly what he wrote! My 2nd most prized record is Ra Can Row, which I bought in the early 1980s because of the wild cover, turned out to be a really cool listen, would love a CD version so I don't mess up the record on my old turntable.

Can I say this: you got impeccable taste, man. I love that your lists (both the first one too) go deep; eclectic. I m pretty sure I have them all. Great music. I have found it...challenging approaching Jazz, and involving it in my life. Like all my friends I have been a Rock music guy; and then got totally into Soul . But those types of music are still of a kind, in a way. Jazz is not asa simple. And I never wanted to listen to Jazz w/o trying to understand just a tiny bit of it. So I really appreciate you knowing your way around the Blue Note label, and some players. I learned something from listening you talk today. BTW did they actually bleep out 'Bitches'?

About Beefheart - if you want to get into the sort of style he had on Trout Mask Replica, I suggest first listening to the album he made right after that, "Lick My Decals Off, Baby", it's similar but I think a little easier to digest. You should also check out stuff from his later period, like "Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller)", it's an excellent album, less wild and experimental then his Trout Matk Replica era material but still quirky and unusual.

I just discovered your site brother, and your recommendations are fantastic. I am hip to most every recommendation but some of them like Judee Sill and Cactus are new recommendations for me. I have heard of them, but have no experience listening yet to them… And I see over your head what must be Dennis Wilson, and I forget about such things, and I have added him as well (sorry, Charlie, it was not meant to be!) to my “liked” recommendations on my Spotify premium deal. You, sir, are bringing the best music to light, and are doing great work here, and I truly appreciate you. And subbed, naturally! Thanks! You are like a friend bringing gold and rare jewels to the table, and I don’t have any friends like that, soul brother…

If you’re into jazz you’d be missing out if you didn’t know about Clifford Brown! I’d check out either Clifford Brown & Max Roach or Study in Brown. Incredible playing from all the cats in that band. Clifford Brown’s trumpet work is unrivaled even today. Just pure hard bop from the master himself. Great recommendations!

Brownie was the best! Definitely my favorite trumpet player after Pops! He only recorded for about 2 years too before he was tragically killed in a car accident with his wife and pianist/arranger Richie Powell.

Great videos Dillon, love your enthusiasm for vinyl. I sold most of my records a few years ago but there's a couple I wish I'd kept. Barbed Wire Sandwich by Black Cat Bones, great British blues rock and Fully Qualified Survivor by british singer songwriter Michael Chapman. I think the Michael Chapman album can be found quite cheaply but Barbed Wire Sandwich might be harder to find.

@@noblerecords Just watched your Psychedelic/Hard Rock video and saw your Black Cat Bones album. I bought the album in 1970 knowing nothing about the band I just loved the cover, but as soon as I played it I knew it was something special.

Noble Records Saw on one of your last videos you and a guest talking about a few newer artists Jason Isbell, Tyler Childers... Maybe do a “If you like this band from 60-70’s you’ll like this artist from 00-20 who they influenced.” Then you don’t have to be locked into 20, and they don’t necessarily have to be “top albums.” Just a thought. Thanks man you’ve already turned me on to a few albums/artists I had never heard.

I'm a new viewer. I really enjoy your videos and your taste in music. All success to your store! (And would really argue with you over that "Electric Mud" inclusion. As you know, there is also a Howlin' Wolf record done the same way. These were the brainchildren of Marshall Chess, Leonard's son, to "psychedelicize" the electric Chicago blues, much as his dad had done earlier in the 60s with "Muddy Waters, Folksinger", positioning Muddy to appeal to the folkies. I once met Phil Upchurch, the great jazz guitarist who played on these records and they embarrassed him. Howlin' Wolf disowned his version and I don't blame him)

Rodriguez was actually huge in Australia bitd. A copy of cold fact got into a DJs hands and he became an overnight sensation. He toured here twice in the seventies and once in the 80s. I grew up listening to him, and was puzzled by the story of the Australian guy finding him, being misappropriated in the south African doco. Check out his live fact album recorded in Australia during his 79 tour

I saw George Harrison in the thumbnail, and I clicked so fast. All Things Must Pass is one of my favorite albums by that man, and I completely agree that it’s greater than anything any of the other Beatles had done. Then again he’s just my favorite.

Don’t own any of those albums, yet, but I have been rocking Cymande for a long time on Spotify. I’ve been pronouncing it Sah, Mahn, Day. Brothers on the slide is a great tune 👌🏼 I’d say the following records.. David Axelrod - The Edge. Capital Records 1966-1970 Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady New Order - Technique Fela Kuti (any, just have some!) Kate Bush - Hounds of Love The Specials - The Specials
