The way you set up your lessons on screen is especially accessible and helpful. I love that you have the notation, the chord names, and both keyboards. It really makes your videos truly exceptional.

I am new to your channel but I just wanted to say that after watching a few of your longer videos, you are so so underrated. I have followed various jazz piano sources online for around 8 years and without exaggerating your content is the most structured and consistent in its value. Maybe this is because of the level of understand I'm currently at matching perfectly with what you are describing and how. But I do believe that your video on passing chords is one of the most valuable things a jazz pianist learning to improvise on chord progressions can practice.

Thank you, that was clear and informative 🙏 The concept of adding grace notes to the third of a major triad that is made up extended notes in the right hand really surprised me and opened up my mind.

Wow. This was so good. I'm classically trained and pretty good with diatonic harmony as it pertains to classical and pop. So, I found the secondary dominant of the secondary dominant (V/III- V/vi- vi), and the extended & altered chords quite refreshing. Looking to learn jazz harmony, so this was very helpful! Thanks.

Just watched your video this morning. And yes indeed you are a skilled musician! I am a pianist/ keyboardist for over 35 years and I’m familiar with these concepts but I just wanted to commend you on your very clear and straight forward approach. You also seem like a real nice person, which is most important. Very cool! And very interesting and fun. How I wish youtube and people like you were around when I was 15. I had to resort to wearing out the needle on my chick Corea, joe sample and jeff Lorber records!! ( which is not a bad thing). What program do you use to have the graphics/notes up on the screen as you play? Anyway, a real pleasure. I’m going to iTunes to look you up cause you sound like a “serious player”. Would love to hear your music. All the best to you. D Obadia.

Thanks mister088! I really appreciate your kind words! I too remember the days of wearing out my CDs and miniDisc recordings. In regards to the software, we utilize a software program called Chordie by a guy on RU-vid named Matkat Music. This displays the on-screen keyboard and music notation. Saved in watch later. This is for the viewers. I'm enjoying the video. A super quick way to find 13th is say root b7 and then six. Best illustration is the easiest C. We always need to go up in the scale of wanted chord in this case C. Then go down a whole step or two semi tones. That gives you a b7. Now drop by a half step and that's the 13th. I know the six was found by going up for clarity but in real practice this is legitimate. Now, since a step and a half is just a minor step down, we can do a descending run down and instantly find the minor 3rd or the root. I'll use C . Using fingers on the right hand 123, Going chomatically down 3,1 C A... 3,2 B Ab....3,2. Bb G.. I'll stop there. A good practice is to write things down ..It reinforces what you've learned and you don't have to figure it out on the go.

I am going to have to download this and understand this one by one and replay them over and over. It is very complicated sir and complex too. Sorry I am like your student who plays straight note and chords without adding any color. I wish can play like the way you play it but still I need to go and practice it on songs, wonder if it can be done or not? Sir thank you for your awesome information and lesson. I am downloading it. I wonder if you can make a tutorial with a simple song with plain chords and notes and then you remodel it with colors as seen on the video so it can be understood by beginners like me?

I have the first 25 notes on piano ..I think this is based on back home in Indiana. I plan to listen to it tonight. At this point, the Donna Lee is just a blur of notes with a jazz chord progression. I've heard the sax on this and it has a different feel than piano

You are right about Donna Lee and Indiana. You definitely want to practice it so that each note is clear. So a lot of slow practice!! Sax and piano will definitely feel different!

@@SkilledMusician The Dixieland bands and bands do a good job ..its still a far distant cousin. I do a lot of improv on piano songs on my piano channel and it sounds to me like basically we are copying the improve..putting Gmin7 arp. over Ebmaj 7..if I remember right. This also reminds me of some Herbie Hancock licks. Well..it is Bebop. Also I do slow practice and try to think why are we doing such and such. It usually boils down to a version of a 1 6 3 2 5 1.

My pleasure, I stumble upon these kind of videos for a weird reason, I'm composing 8-bit/16-bit music and I'm trying to improve the way I structure melodies and chord progressions, and I find these gems like your video :D

Man, I love your voicings! Studying the numbers... It's beautiful. In time hopefully I get agile enough to find the keys, right now it's a lot of counting while playing which makes me slow but it's a great journey. Thanks!
