I always empty the small dust collection “bag” that came with my orbital sander before sanding a different species of wood. The saw dust can then be saved and mixed with glue and used as a species-specific wood filler.

Wow! You're the BOMB! I'm just getting started (sort of) with using my sanders properly. I knew orbital sanders have a very important role in prepping surfaces. I stripped and sanded my kitchen cabinets 4 years ago and OMG do I regret that dumb decision. Now, however, I'm going to start restoring furniture (for myself--not to sell). I want to do a good job. This video is so clear and covers almost everything. Thank you so much for this!!

Where have they been all my life? I've only just discovered you can get 'sanding pad savers'. It's a double hook and loop disc in the size you want that stays on your pad. You then rip off and replace from that, not the pad. This extends the life of your machine no end.

I often work with sanders, (festool mostly) dont put too mutch pressure on it, take it easy, use a shopvac if possible and take brakes to let your hands rest. With grits you should not skip a lot, i usually only use 120. But if you go through the grits dont add more than 50%. 80 to 120, 120 to 180, 180 to 240. If you even want to go that high. Ps if you sand difficult areas before you assemble it you wont need to get into difficult spots

Velcro = brand name hook & loop. If they used the name Velcro, they'd have to pay royalties. Absolutely LOVE the hand sander that takes the disks! Gonna look for one of those. =) *edit - I got a Bandit brand respirator intended for auto body repair guys to use. If you think your dust mask is good, try one of these and realize how much was getting through the small mask. They cost about $30, but are comfortable, forms a good seal even with my having a beard, and are super effective.*

@@SpecificLove7 Thank you. Also, you can use a ROS on more than just wood... I did concrete at my sister's house & the surface flaked off because I had too much water in it. Put a 40 grit pad on & it made short work of evening things up.

Just got one of those hook and loop foam Sanders actually I bought a 3 pack. They work incredible. So simple but the pressures very even it doesn’t dig in and pull out any of your wood filler out. And now I only buy 5 inch discs less to store. Also great video love the tip about cardboard.

If you start with wood that is already smooth don't use a coarser grit like 60 or 80. You'll make it worse.

Hi complete sanding nub here . i'm going to attempt sanding down my staircase ... I just ordered a Ryobi orbital . Looking at dust collectors right now ( hopefully I can find one the just plugs into the sander ) Do you know if the 3M cubitron II disc will stick to the Ryobi ? I don't think Net-back disc stick to velcro ... & i have no clue as to witch " " protective Disc / Backing Pad " " i need to get to do this. So Please if any one can help .... I can get started on this ... thanx

How do you like the Ryobi cordless sander compared to the Rigid? I’m on the Ryobi line and am considering getting a cordless sander. I have a corded Rigid but I sand mostly outside and it’s nice not having to drag out an extension cord and have it get in the way all the time. Just not sure if a Ryobi is sufficient or if I should go higher end. I don’t mind the extra coat. Thanks

If you already have a bunch of Ryobi batteries for your other tools, then I would probably just consider getting the same brand sander.

I've found that the cordless ones aren't worth it. Why? It works much better with a vacuum hose. In fact, there are models with built-in suction. They are not much more money and they have waay better dust management.

Putting too much pressure on your sander stops the disc from spinning. It will probably still oscillate and that movement disguises the fact that it's not spinning.
