As a carpenter, handyman, RU-vidr, and furniture flipper, we have had our fair share of sanders, so I thought I would share with you my thoughts on the different big box store sanders we have owned over the years.
this is not a sponsored video, just my honest opinion on some of my likes and dislikes when using each sander.
The prices for the sanders are current to the time of this video's release, so they may be subject to change over time.

Thanks for sharing your experience in a passionate way! This is the most invaluable info I got when researching orbital sanders from a dozen videos I watched on the topic! All the best, man, and keep up the good work!

Great Video! I have the Bosch and the Makita. I do use both with my Bosch shop vac, so not using the bag and canister for dust collection. The bosch fits the shop vac hose perfectly, However I did needed someone to 3D print me a fitting to connect my Makita to the shop vac hose. Works perfectly and NO dust! Very happy

Yeah, I've seen Matt on Badger Workshop use the Bosch shop vac. Would love to try it one day. Right now we have a Rdgid shop vac hooked up to one of the Home Depot bucket dustopper and it's MEHH.

My 15-20 year old Makita finally gave up the ghost. After looking at several reviews I bought the Bosch ROS20VSC from Lowes. Couldnt be more pleased. Its a dust dust collector that doubles as a sander. Less dust in the air or on the workpiece than any other sander Ive ever used. Price is right too.

Just bought this one too, I see it's very old and was released years ago but apparently it's still one of the best!

I have the makita sander and I love it. It was great for sanding house siding, trim, and wooden ceilings. The dust collection bag on it is also the best I've ever seen. The pad extending out to the sides more helps with getting into tight areas. 10/10 it's awesome.

Awesome! Thanks for the comprehensive review!! Have y'all tried the Hercules 5" ROSander from Harbor Freight? It's also 3amp It looks like it has the same side profile of your Makita but seems to have the same on/off switch of the Milwaukee. It's also 6 speed variable but it's only $60!! Unless you get it on sale which they're always putting stuff on sale. If you have used it, what did you think?

I borrowed that Makita from a guy at work yesterday and it was nice. I have an old Porter Cable but it's too light and hurts my hand after a while. Might have to let go of the money to get the Makita. People seem to love it and it won't break the bank.

Are you not better off with a square/triangle base for woodworking than a round base? So you can get into corners?
@boydstongrove
@boydstongrove 10 месяцев назад
Great question! 99% of woodworkers gravitate to orbital / round sanders because they can sand all the pieces of a project before they are assembled. But for refinishing the furniture; square shaped would NORMALY be better, however, most big box store square sanders have very hard edges that can mar the other sides of the piece, when trying to get into a corner. There are companies that make high end furniture sanders, specifically for getting into tight spots, but those sanders are a little out of our range $$$, so we typically just hand sand any spots we can't reach with the orbital sanders.

That extra hand grip on the Makita is for folks like me. I have very loose, floppy fingers and the vibrations make me lose grip strength quickly. I have to constantly change my grip or I'll just have a witchy looking claw hand that can't grasp a thing. Being able to use it palm style, handle style, or with two hands just shot this sander way to the top of my list! Any other hypermobile people out there who have used it? Any feedback?
@boydstongrove
@boydstongrove 5 месяцев назад
That's good to know. I still haven't used the extra handle, but I do normally use the trigger lock so I can free move my hand or switch hands. It's still my favorite sander.

Great, great video. Little question for you. You kept saying dust collection systems are small on some sanders. why don't you connect it to vacuum cleaner-like tubes or something similar that are longer and can suck alot more dust? Try that and let us know.

seems like the makita also scores big because you can attach a vacuum hose to the dust collector, where the others look like you'd need to 3d print a part to do it....
@boydstongrove
@boydstongrove 11 месяцев назад
That’s a good point, to be honest, we do a lot of our work outside, so I typically just use the bag, but I should try them all and see which are the most adaptable to a vacuum system. Thanks for watching!

Summary ● Best tied for 1st place: Makita, Bosch (best for dust?), Dewal (overall good workhorse), Milwaukee (Wish they actually ranked them...instead they seemed to love them equally). ● Worst: rigid. ● CORDLESS Ryobi: just ok, lots of vibration...needs 2-3 batteries for a med/large project. Suitable for DIYer only.

Ranking would have been a really good idea! Wish that had come to mind when I was putting together this video. I'll remember that or the next time.

I’m Team Ryobi, but that orbital sander is an atrocity. Your shop is better off without it.

Yeah, we got it for the shape of the sanding head, to get into tight spots but honestly, we hardly every use it.

Well junk is what you should expect from them given their price and that's what you'll get. Surprisingly though, I've remodeled two houses now with their junky cheap tools. (Not that sander but every other tool.) I'm finally working on collecting better tools now, but those cheap things more than paid for themselves. Surprisingly they still work, I don't know how but they do.
