Mike, thanks for your brilliant experiment, you remember that dating thing that was huge a few years ago called "speed dating", it was people in a bar talking with prospective dating partners for a minute, and jumping from table to table every minute and at the end they must chose one out of 15 or 20 people... Well, now you are doing "speed shooting" with cameras. I still cannot decide which one I will choose. I missed an Eumig from your picks.

Thank you Ramiro!! "speed shooting" 😂😂 Love it!! I wish I had a good Eumig to mess with, but unfortunately, none currently in the stable 🙁

Wow, really interesting video Mike. Plus X is one on my favorite b&w film stocks , pity it’s no longer in production. Great demonstration on how much these cameras play in the final outcome of expired films. The canon cameras did a great job as expected, the real surprise for me was the Zenit mechanical camera. I think it’s a very underrated camera given the results I’ve seen online. Keep up the great work.

@thecelluloidalchemist999 I concur, Plus-X was/is the best BW !

Thanks, Nicholas!! I third that motion, I really wish we had some fresh Super 8 Plus-X. So superior to any B&W stock Super 8 has ever seen...in my opinion of course 😉

Very cool. I like the Zenit and the Quarz! That Bolex looked like it got the hiccups a lil’ bit. I did find it funny that you put the Bently into the mix.. 😅

Yeah, that Bolex definitely needs to go for a physical, 🤣

Wow, 20 awesome stuff! I liked a lot of them for different reasons but that Elmo looks nice, Bell and Howell pretty sweet. Chinon 60, that minolta looks great too! Thanks Mike Great Video, gonna check out that indiegogo link, Cheers!!

I don't know why but I'm always shocked by how good the Bell & Howell T30XL footage is. It's not perfect (no such thing as perfection) but it looks really good. The color footage looks so cool too. Great video.

Thanks, Rene! I'm with you on that, amazing how such an inexpensive camera can compete with the "big boys".

This is beautiful. You can kind of tell what kind of mood every camera gives and you can think what genre of movie would be ideal on each. Love the different kind of exposure latitudes. Very interesting!

Well done, sir! Very much enjoyed the back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to… (you get it) comparisons. Great way to contrast the various camera/exposure/lens attributes, aesthetics, etc. I just wrapped up a roll of Plus-X out in Arizona/Utah about a month ago. (Will be emailing you about that!) Actually shot some at “Wall Street” trail at Arches NP (site of opening scene in “IJ: The Last Crusade”) Not sure there was enough light for this older film - visit was later in day, during the golden hour… Also… I saw a comment by somebody about testing a Eumig, and you stated you did not have one. I could lend you one (if/when I ship some film down to you), if you care to put the camera through the paces. Just an idea… Hope that you have been well! Sorry that it’s been so long since checking in/commenting. I do still watch and like, though! That’s something… no? Yes? Lol

Thanks so much, glad to hear from you!! Plus-X sure does need a bit of light but it's pretty forgiving...fingers crossed. Let me know whenever you're ready, I'll be here. I may take you up on your Eumig offer, just need to get caught up with some other stuff first :)

Hello mike i recently commented on a possible sound projection system for the 16mm format and recently ive been able to acquire a Auricon CM-72 optical sound camera kit I believe if im able to get the amplifier working, get a NOS microphone, and a reflex lens from a cp-16 in c-mount then it might be able to make some sound films again and possibly even some low budget films for a few projects I think for a future video it might make for a interesting topic to cover one of the optical sound cameras available as there is quite a few on ebay still for a relatively decent price and itll be able to document some of the more sophisticated side to sound projecting if your able to get a optical sound projector
@Filmboy24
@Filmboy24 Год назад
I do think it'll be a great little project. I had a couple of Auricon Pro-600 cameras that I truly wish I still had. I think it would be interesting to mess with optical sound, just not equipped to do so right now and quite frankly, I really don't have the room for anything else right now either 😂

I bought a vintage super 8 Sears 155 3x zoom camera from street market yesterday which is supposed to be working, and whilst googling trying to find out how super 8 cameras work I stumbled upon your channel! Really enjoying the content, especially when you scan found film. Do you, or any of your followers here in the comment section, have any tips on how to get started with shooting super 8 film? I’m trying to absorb everything that’s being said on this channel to understand some of it haha!

Congratulations on your camera and Thank You for watching!! Shooting Super 8 can be so much fun and is an awesome hobby. The absolute best way to get started is to just dive right in. I'd put fresh batteries in, pick up a cartridge of film and start shooting some stuff in your area. Pick a lab and send off your film to get processed and scanned, then sit back and enjoy!! If you have any specific questions or concerns, please let me know :)

Well the scan isn't perfect and you get hard grain in certain gray values. with that said: the Minolta XL-401 is obviously the winner. The image has nicer contrast, sharpness and depth than the rest. I am surprised how much vertical jitter is there. Perhaps the old emulsion didn't help. The most influence obviously have the lens (quality and state of preservation), back focus and what's going on at the gate. Love the vibe of the Plus-X. That was a beautiful stock.
@Filmboy24
@Filmboy24 Год назад
Thanks, Christian! Most of the "bounce" was due to the fact that I didn't stabilize the footage at all. Super high end scanners stabilize as they scan, mine doesn't and that has to be done after render...and it's a pain!! 🤣
@truefilm6991
@truefilm6991 Год назад
@@Filmboy24 It's quite easy in Adobe Premiere Pro and other video editing suites. It will even re-frame the image as needed automatically if you want. I do like the fact that it's untouched, so you can see the amount of jitter for each camera. I'm not aware of the auto-stabilize in scanners. As far as know the reference for scanners is the sprocket hole. Stabilization IMHO should be done by hand, choosing the amount, since software - as far as I know - cannot distinguish between jitter and camera shake.
@Filmboy24

@@truefilm6991 It's pretty easy to do in Vegas Pro also, but I usually prefer to do it via the perfs and as far as I know that's easiest in Davinci Resolve (which is what I do). I've messed with stabilizing the picture and it never really does a very good job. My scanner does use the perfs for reference while scanning, however my scanner software doesn't stabilize as you go. I'm not aware of any scanners that stabilize as they scan either, however the software that some use, does it as they scan, rather than post render (like mine).
