honorable mention to the Oblivion actress who redoes her line, but they leave it all in. "...all on the same night! ...wait a minute, let me do that one again .... I heard that thieves broke into the arcane university..."
Skyrim also has some awkward line deliveries, like when you get to Adriane the blacksmith in Whiterun, she tells you of blacksmith Greymane, but when it comes to his name, it's very obvious it's from different audio take, as volume is slightly different and her pronunciation and tone doesn't fir rest of the sentence. My best guess is she messed up the name pronunciation so they had her just say his name again instead of redoing the entire lengthy line and call it a day. It's obviously not a huge deal, but when she says "Eorlund Gray-Mane" it really sticks out, it's almost like AI voice. Don't even get me started on ton of obviously disinterested NPCs you find in the game, they would speak of their horrific war stories in bored, monotonous way, most notable example the "war hero" Nord you find in Windhelm. Dude didn't give a damn recording those lines.
That's hilarious. I took that delivery not as a reread, but someone who (in game) thought they didn't emphasize their words enough to convey the proper urgency for the mission they want you to do and said again with more emotion lmao
The FFX laugh was meant to be awkward. Like you said it's part of the story. Yuna was trying to help Tidus through a difficult time by suggesting he force a smile or laugh so the laugh was meant to be like that. It always irks me when people point that scene out as being weird because when you're playing the game that scene is actually pretty heartwarming.
Exactly this! It would make sense for people to make fun of it if it was meant to a normal laugh, but it wasn’t. It was SUPPOSED to be forced and awkward. I’m glad to see someone else saying it. It’s also quite emotional. When Yuna says he should probably stop but Tidus just can’t, you can tell he’s letting out all his pent up sadness and frustration. It was a very therapeutic moment for him.
That laughing scene is always brought up as an example of bad voice acting in video games and it annoys the hell out of me because it's actually an example of great voice acting. The whole scene shows the massive range of the two voice actors that they can manage fake sounding laughter and genuine sounding laughter with such effectiveness not to mention the rest of the lines involved.
@@brandonjones5879 No, it's not. In fact it's one of the best scenes in the game. It shows the bond growing between the two and makes Tidus' and Yuna's relationship much more believable.
@@immortalfrieza yet twenty years later and it’s still picked apart as one of the most terrible scenes in the game. Intentions are great. Execution is more important. It’s just a terribly written scene.
I was hoping to see Tim Curry's line from Red Alert 3: "I am escaping to the one place that hasn't been corrupted by capitalism... SPACE!!" 😂😂 him trying not to burst out laughing is the best part too
The infamous heavy rain "JAAS-OON!!!" and "SHAUUUN!!!" the voice acting never mind the yelling Shaun glitch always gets me laughing. Every David Cage game has some weird dialogue, would be good for part 2.
You are completely right about the laugh in FFX. It was completely intended to sound awkward and forced, and the original Japanese performance is identical in execution, backing up your observation. Being on this list does kind of mean that the scene did what it was supposed to do: use fake laughter to elicit genuine laughter. "You spoony bard," on the other hand, isn't so much a mistranslation that fell through the cracks, but it's actually just a very archaic term that actually fits Tellah's assessment of Edward. It's famous because it sounds weird, but unlike the other lines you compared it to, it's not actually a mistake.
also yeah, I think he was inlove with Tellah's daughter or something but she died, if I remember right and he was being a little bitch, I could be thinking about the wrong game or storyline though, its been years
FYI, "Crispy Critter" was first coined by US combat nurses during the Vietnam war to describe burn victims. There was a lot of incendiary devices and substances used during that war, resulting in a constant stream of 'crispy critters' coming in to the field hospitals.
@@circa1919 I remember playing DMC like ~5 years ago for the first time and got to this scene, at first I got goosebumps from cringe but after I realized what happened I just burst out laughing
The frogs is a perfect example of why people love EDF, it doesn't take itself too seriously and it's just one of those games that still has the old charm to it, you don't need to follow some complicated storyline or something it's just there and all good fun in the game developers openly make jokes and make fun of their own game
Me and the boys lost it in EDF 5 when they said, "They look almost identical to humans" while referring to giant frog men. Glad someone else has noticed it!
Personally everytime I see that clip it feels like they’re referencing the Ancient Greek philosophy question of describing a human in the least amount of words and the answer of “featherless biped” that was given.
It’s much better than Richter starting off the conversation with, “Die, monster!” a line that could work as something shouted in the heat of combat. But he keeps talking, as if his opening line was an invitation for Dracula to listen further to anything else he has to say.
I’m so happy to see House of the Dead 2 on this list. Grew up playing that game on the Dreamcast a lot and the awkward dialogue was always my favorite thing about it 😆
@@CopyableOak doesn't change the fact its a little dumb. They could have re recorded it. However I love that line because it always makes me laugh so eh 😂😂
Just played through that part an hour ago! The delivery is like; "you probaly can't tell by looking at it, but my advanced ai brain has clued in to the fact this is not, in fact, a natural structure" as you enter a massive, clearly advanced alien mega structure
It gets better....there's a showcase race in Forza Horizon 4 that involves you as Master Chief driving a Warthog while trying to get to the landing zone further down the offroad "track". When you go through the freeway tunnel, she gets to say this imfamous line again, and it's just as cheesy given the circumstances. 🤣
I think what makes the EDF 5 "humanoid alien" bit even funnier to me is later in the game, if I remember correctly, when aliens that are much more "humanlike" are introduced they comment on how alien they are and unlike humans.
Yes! I clicked hoping it would make the cut but I spent more than 20 minutes waiting for something actually laugh-worthy to pop up. The only thing that I kinda enjoyed was the Forspoken bit (haven't played it although I'm considering it now) because it had that excited, sarcastic doofus character energy that I enjoy and reminds me of stuff I love in tv shows like BtVS, for example. But then again, I'm not an overgrown anime & fantasy dork either, so there's that.
In GTA3 a random by stander would shout "My mother's my sister!" Which as a kid I thought was just weird. Seconds later he'll yell again saying "What! She's my cousin?".... It's made me laugh for years. Thanks rock star.
I'll never forget when I was younger and I used to watch my dad play video games. The characters would drop an f bomb, and every time it happened he would cough aggressively and say, "Don't tell your mother!
Not exactly a bad line just one that genuinely caught me off guard and still makes me chuckle. In Kingdom Come deliverance there is a NPC who will teach you archery and you can ask him a bunch of standard rpg questions and it eventually leads to this “I see you have targets and a bow, do you by chance teach archery?” And he simply responds “And your asking a lot of questions are you by chance the Spanish Inquisition?” Will never fail to make me laugh especially considering how serious the game tends to take itself as a simulator so it just is a good ole laugh.
Skyrim Adrianne Avenicci: I don’t claim to be the best blacksmith in Whiterun… Dragonborn: What have you got for sale? Adrianne: The finest weapons and armor 😂
Hi Jake! Portals and portals 2 have a lot of good lines especially in the beginning when Wheatley is talking to Chell for the first time or when GLaDOS says "so how are you doing? CAUSE I'M A POTATO"
You forgot the game "Bard's Tale", which is hilarious in every way, cuz he's literally seen it all, heard it all, & done it all. But one scene that will always stick with me is the Bard walks into a room to see a dance-off between zombies & skeletons, and at the end, the skeleton points to the zombie and says "You Got Served!"
Kingdom Hearts is full of dialogue like that and i still love it. As others have said Final Fantasy X the laugh scene while awkward does have meaning behind it. FF IV "you spoony bard" gets me every time though 😂
You know a line is legendary when all it takes is seeing Dante and you know what's coming. And before the line even comes you're already in tears before the line is even said🤣
Life is Strange was a great game, and also filled with some very awkward dialogue. This was most notable in how the kids spoke to each other, which felt like it was written by adults who thought that's what kids say to each other, delivered by adult voice actors that were trying to sound like kids. Case in point: "Now you're totally stuck in the Retro Zone. Sad face." -Victoria Chase to Max. Ungh...that's just painful.
I'm glad to see a lot of people understand the actual context of the laughing scene from FFX. Unlike most of the other moments on this list, the scene from 10 is meant to be cringe, it's a part of the context of the scene. As for FFIV, the Spoony Bard line, while "made up", spoony is an actual word. Tellah is basically calling him a love-sick fool. It actually relates to the term we know of as "spooning" lol. It's still funny, but it does fit the context of the scene.
yeah, whenever i see the laugh from ten on lists like these i tend to audibly say " it SUPPOSED to be like that!" the whole point is that its FORCED laughter to try to make them feel better. Its supposed to be odd and awkward. Even the first time i played 10 i understood that so i never understand why it hits lists like these tbh.
It's in one of the older Tenchu games, don't know which one, but the dialogue is actually the least weird aspect of a cutscene where you meet a boss and it's some weird lumpy dude who marches toward you with an honestly hauntingly silly walking animation, there's a baby crying in the background just because and he then says: "I KNOUW what yew want! Yew want the STOUNE! It's nice and SAFE...inside my BELLY!" in an accent that sounds both overplayed and completely unintelligible at the same time somehow.
Typing of the dead brought the dialog to another level by having the chrs run around with keyboards instead of guns and dreamcasts strapped to their backs. Its pure gold
BTW the backspace key is broken on my keyboard so just deal with whatever you see as in errors, just deal like I did in school and now I'm jaded because of it. Life's NOT fair, huh?
@@LobsterPuncher It's honestly an ingenious way to get kids to learn and hone their typing skills, as well as a way to sell a "violent" zombie game to kids that parents would actually buy. I'd have played the shit outta that game if I had a dreamcast. These days I type pretty well, so I'd love to find a way to play it.
Thanks for defending Tidus and Yuna's laugh :) That was an intense and pivotal moment in the story & development of their characters imo...given the pilgrimage they are on
Right? I feel like the type of humor FF can have gets lost in translation sometimes, but also Tidus iirc was just trying to do his best to make Yuna laugh and forget how much she has to stay composed and happy 100% of the time for everyone in Spira, despite how stressful things are for her. So he was mocking the idea of forced and fake happiness with an exaggerated laugh of his own to make her genuinely laugh? That's how I remember interpreting it.
The scene makes perfect sense, it was the line delivery. The English voice actor for Tidus gives such a shrill laugh that it overrides the emotional point the scene is trying to make. Yuna's does better in coming across as more mocking, but not by much.
@@kevinclapson Thanks for even mentioning this. My next playthrough I'll definitely use the original Japanese VA, as i've never done before in any of the voice acted Final Fantasy games.
@Danny Lee it was intended to be as much, but the voice actors delivery is so bad it doesn't come across that way unless you're paying attention to the writing to lend context to the scene. There is a reason the moment has been so heavily criticized for decades.
I remember playing Sonic Adventure and listening to all that terrible dialogue, especially right in the beginning with the police encounter with Chaos. The voice actor sounded like an AI meant to sound like an announcer dramatically reading off terribly written lines of a police officer.
RE4 was so campy and hilarious. The one standout line to me was Leon's response to Salazar telling him he was sending his right hand after him: "Your right hand comes off?" Something like that. So dumb and funny, random Dad-joking Leon
Good references in the first Resident Evil game, but my brother and I also used to laugh at Barry saying, “what is it?!” Several times with different emphasis on different syllables also. We would go around the house and randomly give our own dramatic, “what is it?!” To each other.
Shenmue: “So do you know where any sailors like to hang out?” NPC: “all the sailors are big you know. You’ll know who they are just by looking!” It’s just so strange and oddly specific. Then again it’s Shenmue.
There was a lot of this in arcade games in the 80s and early 90s, mostly due to translation issues. The ones that stand out to me were "All your base are belong to us/" from Zero Wing and the intro to Bad Dudes "The president has been kidnapped by ninjas. Are you a bad enough dude to rescue the president?" I've heard that the original Japanese from Bad Dudes doesn't mention ninjas at all and makes more sense. Bard's Tale, the Dragon Quest games, and the Yakuza series are loaded with goofy dialog, but it's meant to be there and is a big part of what makes the games so entertaining.
In the Resident Evil remake Ramon Salazar still says the lines about “the script” etc in the boss fight will Salazar. My favourite line in the remake is when Leon has to fight some suits of armour and after the fight Leon says “knighty knight, knights” He has a few one liners but that’s my favourite. I also love when Ashley says she’s the master of unlocking, I loved that little nod to the first game
I hate people criticizing the FFX laugh. That scene is actually beautiful and in a lot of ways pretty tragic. It's imo probably the most misunderstood scene in gaming.
the Tenchu series has a lot of fun dialogue worth looking into for this series. also the Tenchu Wrath of Heaven game on PS2 has an entire unlockable secondary joke story that replaces all the dialogue with silly stuff. (it's intentionally silly so i don't know if that counts) i don't know if you're looking for specifically unintentional comedy or stuff that doens't take itself seriously and is just having fun though
I'm not criticizing it for including brevity with a heavy story like FFX. I still play that game once a year or so. Doesn't mean it was well-executed. I cringed at it the first time I saw it. The fact that the entire rest of the game was nearly flawless only makes this cringe stand out more.
My roommate let me play his Playstation while he was out of town, but he didn't have a memory card. So, for me the intro sequences of Resident Evil are burned into my brain, so when I think of bad RE lines, I think of the absolutely awkward pauses in the dialog. Chris: "Barry! Where's Barry?!" (2 second delay) Wesker: "I'm sorry, but he's probably..." (3 seconds of dead silence) Jill: *gasp* "NOOO!" Amazing.
What about The Town With No Name? Everything from "Do you have the time old man???," to the infamous "my name's not Shayne kid." There's so much great line delivery in that game.
I love the EDF one because they say about the frogs that "they look just like us", but in another mission when there's the classic grey aliens that look more human, there's dialogue "they look nothing like us"
The Megaman scientist! Omg hahaha. That was so funny! Best localization choice ever. Literally does sound like they paid some guy $10 and a bottle of something to read lines. This whole video was amazing.
The goofed dialogue from Oblivion is some of the all time best. It's more of a bug than just poorly written or delivered, but it gets me every time I hear it
Crispy critters is not a catch phrase but a huge mental trauma of the main character: he and his partner were hit by explosion and burned significantly. The first medic who found them said "They burned like crispy critters", this is how the new personality of the main character got this phrase.
Funniest most awkward dialogue is clearly Oblivion. I can watch compilations all day. Gets me laughing every time. -So what are the news from the other parts of Tamriel? -Go away! -Farewell! -Goodbye.
reminds me of a funny video i saw: a town guard kills a dragon, and i mean he JUMPS ON IT'S HEAD... THEN he says "my cousin is out fighting dragons, and what do I get? guard duty." -that was in Skyrim, BTW.

@@tobiasschumacher8602 that was debunked ages ago. Even the guy who wrote the actual line of dialogue for the game said it has nothing to do with getting married.
Number 10 had me laughing way too hard, and that’s from someone growing up with Shenmue and thinking the line mentioned prior was absolutely hilarious as a kid.
the aknowlagement that the laugh at number 15 was not an acting mistake but awkward on purpose. Due to story reasons. threw me for a loop. I have never ever seen a gameing channel do their reasearch like that. The ff 10 laugh is hated due to the scene NEVER ever being shown in its actual context, but always with a negitive agenda. I’ve got something to add that makes the crispy critter thing potentially very dark. There was a very controversial trial where a man was tried for murdering his two sons for insurance money and he got away with it for years before police started to ask questions. When the investigation began, they spoke to one witness that was a friend or member of the family and attended the funeral. At some point she asked the father if they’d be able to view the boy at the funeral and he said nope. He is a real crispy critter… they ended up using her testimony in court. Wild.
I think "Crispy Critters" is kind of an homage to sci-fi writers Strugatsky Brothers, highly influential in Russia, who tended to use made-up curses in their novels.
"I should have been the one to fill your dark soul with LIGHT" It sounds like there was a note telling the VA to say light as if you just got kicked in the nuts.
19:13 ROFL i just spit my food. the way his voice cracks then echos combined with that music oh my god I'm dying. it's supposed to be emotional but it's so fucking funny
You should do a Best voiced lines in video games. I think would be rather interesting. Some games have those lines that are so well done and filled with raw emotion and I think people need to experience that.
"Crispy Critters" made me laugh, and the back and forth between him and his AI partner while being hunted by creepy mustachioed robots really had me sold on that Atomic Hearts.
Great video! Jagged Alliance 2 is one of my favourite games of all time and there are so many cheezy and cringey dialogue and oneliners. Like when the character Maddog gets shot and says: "ah, blood, now I can fingerpaint"... Amazing.
One of my favourite moments in RE4 is where Salazar calls Leon after Ashley gets captured, and Salazar makes it very obvious that he doesn't know Ashley walked into a trap, and when Leon tells him (fck knows why) he instantly knows which trap it is with no reference to the type of trap
