As someone who is perpetually single, I decided to go to the theatre by myself in 2018, and have been going once every other month since! I'd recommend The National who do £15 tickets for amazing shows. Also, Phillipa Gregory writes amazing fiction based on the lives of Henry VIII's wives- the constant princess about Catherine of Aragon is a personal favourite!

Not sure if you know this already but youtube has a huge knitting community with lots of great tutorials. Most items you make will utilize the skills you already have! If you add an increase stitch of some sort and a decrease stitch (very similar to binding off) you can make an entire sweater! You got this!

Love your plans, I'm also hoping to make the most out of the concerts, museums, exhibitions and the like around me. In terms of knitting, if you're feeling like moving on from scarfs I would heartily recommend socks as a first project - there's a youtube channel "Pink knits" that has a sock pattern available as well as video tutorials for every step of the pattern to make it very easy to follow (it was one of my first projects as a knitter). Wish you all the best with your plans in 2020!

Alison Weir's The Six Wives of Henry the VIII is a super readable but pretty indepth history (Anne Of Cleves is my favourite, the party Queen). Weir also wrote a great biography of Eleanor of Aquitaine, a badass lady of history.

The Guildhall Gallery is amazing and it was free last time I went. I go to the theatre on my own all the time and I like it, it's fine once you get used to it. I really want to go to The Serpentine Gallery for the first time, see the Alice in Wonderland Exhibition at the V&A and restart my PhD without feeling completely intimidated. Hope all of your thesis and writing projects go well this year :)

Yaaasss Jean going to the theatre alone is the best! I’ve also found that a lot of the cheap last minute tickets are lone seats in the middle of a row. There’s something really empowering about deciding to do something and just doing it without having to consult anyone else

Hope you enjoy Cambridge! I would recommend popping into the Fitzwilliam Museum for a little bit of nearly everything, in one gorgeous building! Also G. David Bookseller down St Edward's Passage - just off King's Parade but a wonderful hidden gem - and the Botanic Gardens.

Best wishes for a happy new year! Thanks for sharing and I recommend The New Forest and Dorset for a trip. The forest is of course beautiful, the beach here in Bournemouth is world class and brilliant for a walk in the winter months. We also have the Jurassic coastline and Sculptures by the Lake worth a look. Mary Shelley is buried in a central churchyard in Bournemouth and it’s a beautiful old church to visit. I will follow your progress with interest and am excited to hear the writing projects you have lined up 😘

I’ve got 20 things to do in 2020 too and a V&A visit is on there for me too - it’s my fave museum and I haven’t been in ages. Also Kew is gorgeous - go for the light display if you want to wait for next winter :)

So many nice ideas in this video, I like the idea of crafting instead of playing on your phone of an evening, may have to start that and get back into knitting/crocheting! Cambridge is just lovely- Heffers Bookshop is beautiful, and they have recently revamped the Museum of Zoology there too. Hope 2020 brings you all the things you wish for!

Le Temps Viendra is a lesser known time slip novel of Anne Boleyn in two parts. I find it fascinating how different women coped with Henry in a world where they had little in the way of rights -it still resonates as controlling narcissists continue to abound. This book looks at the story from a modern perspective as the main character visits Hever in modern times, falls ill and slips back to the fifteenth century. I think you would enjoy, particularly with your interest in feminism. Really exciting plans for 2020 too and you could visit Heffers bookshops whilst in Cambridge.

The Six Wives of Henry the VIII by Alison Weir is a fantastic read. Also, Six Wives by David Starkey is also interesting.

Such wonderful ideas, thanks for uploading Jean! Tip for Cambridge if you go in spring/summer: The orchard Tea Garden (Granchester). This is a cafe were morning coffee, lunches and afternoon teas are served in a beautiful orchard which, in the past, has been regulary visited by the likes of Virgina Woolf, John Maynard Keynes, E.M. Forster, Bertrand Russell, Augustus John, and Ludwig Wittgenstein.

Not sure if you are looking for fiction or non-fiction when it comes to the books about Henry VIII's wives, but I highly recommend Alison Weir's Six Tudor Queens series. Each book is about one of his wives. Alison Weir is publishing one a year and is up to Anne of Kleves so far, I'm pretty sure Katherine Howard is coming out in 2020. They are historical fiction but Alison Weir is a historian so my understanding is they are pretty historically accurate. They are a great deep dive into each one of Henry VIII's wives as an individual! I also loved Six but had read these before I saw Six haha :)

Museums, I definitely want to give museums another go again. In Hannover they are only free on Fridays, but we have a museum card for 11 museums free for one year, thinking of giving that a go as often it is the entrance fee that holds me back. Not that I don't have the money or don't want to support them in general, just at that moment I get stingy and go have coffe and cake instead. Good luck on all your endeavours.

I studied French in school for five years and really enjoyed it. It's a beautiful language 😍 Sadly, I forgot a lot over the years. So I plan on reading some French books next year. 😊 I'm German so I would totally recommend you learning my language. I think it is a beautiful language despite it sounding kind of harsh to not native speakers. Have lots of fun learning a new language 🤗

This is such a lovely, positive and wholesome video :) Thank you! I like the idea of having plans of the year to be focused on making the most of time with those we love and learning more rather than I must look like this by the end of the year. I’d love a board game recommendation video :) I think it’s you who is a fan of Discworld (apologies if not: so many different people hehe); we recently rediscovered the Discworld Ankh-Morpork board game and it is SO FUN! Highly recommend if you can get a copy :)

I've never played "Discworld: Ankh-Morpork" but it's designer, Martin Wallace, might be my all-time favorite board game designer so I can't imagine going wrong with it.

@@redgatecrafts With board games it's like books; there are critical favorites but everyone has their own personal preferences. Martin Wallace and Corey Konieczka are personal favorite designers. Wallace, a former teacher, designs many historically themed games with extremely thoughtful mechanics. His two "Brass" games may be his best (search out the amazing game trailer) but check out "London" and "Struggle of Empires" as well. His "A Study in Emerald" is unfortunately out of print and only available in the secondary market for exorbitant prices but may be (hopefully!) republished some day. It's a game about 19th century anarchists vs. tyranny in the guise of a Sherlock Holmes vs. Cthulhu game (I'd personally avoid the overly streamlined 2nd edition).

I hope to take action towards living my values more in 2020, I find it easy to get swept up in life and forget what’s really important to me. Also I didn’t know you were doing your PhD at Roehampton, I did my undergrad and first Masters there.

I am a HUGE advocate of doing things by yourself! I imagine there is no difference between going to the theatre and the cinema alone. I really wish I had more friends around here to do board game nights. I don't have many games, either. A few of my friends used to go to a board game cafe in town but the owners were just... not nice. Ahhh this reminded me I needed to get back to you with feedback on your non-fic- would it still be relevant now? I'm sorrrrrry!!!

Antonia Fraser's Wives of Henry VIII is the best group biography I've read. The Romanovs by Simon Sebag Montefiore is a romp about the tsars from Michael to Nicholas II.

For Russian history, you could try Gulag by Anne Applebaum, which is about the Gulag system (shocking, I know). You may also like The Whisperers by Orlando Figes. He also wrote A People's Tragedy. As for Henry VIII's wives, I see you already have had Alison Weir and even Antonia Fraser, who are probably the most approachable writers for Tudor history. I think that other than Alison Weir in particular, there are a lot of books about the specific wives, so if you somehow find excessive time, you could go that in depth. As an off kind of comment, you mentioned being interested in more of the everyday human history, which reminded me of a book I read in college and if you have any interest in Vietnam/Asian history (which is a large topic, I know), certainly check out A People's History Of The Vietnam War by Jonathan Neale. Also, I highly recommend using Duolingo as a free language learning site. I've used it for the past three years or so to learn Norwegian and attest to it being very helpful.

I'd highly recommend Nicholas and Alexandra by Robert K. Massie which sparked my interest in russian history, it's truly an amazing biography.

I read two books of Vladimir Fedorovski on Russian contemporary history, they were great. Don't know if they are translated in English tho.

Last year you inspired me to learn to knit, and it has become my favourite hobby! If you do know Ancient Greek then, if you want to learn a modern language, why not try Modern Greek? The two are not the same. That's why Greek students have to actually translate passages at school, but if you know one language the other one is very easy to learn.
