@sammanthat
@sammanthat 4 года назад
@@victorcorpadea1340 I mean, I know some tattoo artist will "finance" a tattoo if it's large enough to warrant multiple sessions. If you wanna get a sleeve, and it'll most likely take multiple sessions, then they might charge an hourly fee and you could save up for each tattoo session. Or they might charge you based on how far they got in the tattooing process For example, the artist got all of the important line work down on your sleeve and was able to get some shading done - that might be one price. Then next session, the artist managed to get all the rest of the shading done and add in color or other details, that may or may not be the same or different price. So it ultimately depends on the artist and the type/size of the tattoo. Nevertheless, the total amount spent on your tattoo will still be significant in relation to the piece.

When it comes to price, I think it’s fair to at least politely request an estimate once a design and size are finalized, even if it’s the artist giving the estimated time for completion with there hourly rate, gives us an idea to have the money ready when we’re there or come back at a later time

I’ve thought to myself ‘please be almost finished’ with gritted teeth 😂, but no way would I ever say that or have the balls to ask them hurry up. The artist is taking their time for a reason, because they want to be accurate and provide you with an awesome looking tattoo. If it’s getting too painful during a long session, ask for a breather for a few minutes. Most are cool with that. But more than anything, show the artist respect!

@@terryenby2304 unless it's tegaderm, a plastic film that is breathable and actually protects it from germs, don't cover it with anything other than clean clothes if that's an area that's covered with clothing. Covering it with plastic wrap or a paper towel prevents it from healing correctly and traps all the bacteria. It's more likely to get infected if you cover it up after you remove the initial bandage put on by the tattoo artist. Please stop advising people to cover it up. They could get an infection, lose ink, scar up, and just completely ruin the tattoo doing that. If you have a tegaderm put on by the tattoo artist you can leave it on for up to 5 days depending on the film used and once it's taken off you should just wash it and moisturize it but NEVER cover it up again.

A good tip. I just got my first tat not too long ago. It was a memorial piece for my dad. Instead of what I was expecting he actually did it a lil different. There were supposed to be 3 roses on the bottom. He talked to me and said it would be better if there was one rose. This was coming from the dude that owned the shop. He explained why it would look better and I said ok. In the end it went past my expectations and I love it. Always listen to the artist. Don’t ever second guess them. They know what they are doing

This exact thing happened to me with my first tatt. Except it came out worse, not better, I was so nervous about what to expect that I just blindly agreed with what he was saying.. lets just say the musical score on my arm no longer makes any musical sense... 🤦‍♀ (in our email consultations I had already told him that the score was from an important piece of music, but I guess he forgot, or, said something that I just didn't hear properly at the time of the session. I am also autistic so don't always process information/questions immediately).

@sagetaylor8020 5 лет назад
because they think they are brain surgeons because they know how to draw, if you are good at art and love what you do why charge someone to draw something, Tattooing on the other hand is also a bit overpriced its not worth 180-300 n hour its really not and for them to charge someone so much money for needle being shoved in your arm a million times. Don't get me wrong I respect the craft but not the way artist complain about everything, it is part of customer service if you don't have good customer service skills you should not be a tattoo artist.
@impeeing6611
@impeeing6611 5 лет назад
Sage Taylor i get what you mean, but also, artists in general charge money for commissions because that is their profession, you cannot expect someone to do something free regardless of their passion because this is how they make their living. brain surgeons and artists work in different fields, and don’t forget when you’re paying an artist you’re paying a qualified and experienced one, you’re paying for the years of time and training they have put to get to this level. the expensive tattoos are the good quality ones and the ones that have had the most time perfecting
@VeparsDream8264
@VeparsDream8264 5 лет назад
@Sage taylor People are entitled. They think just because it's art, doing it is reward enough. People just can't grasp the concept that this is a job and a business just like anything else and you can't live off the love of the trade. Just because you love something doesn't mean you should do it for free. These aren't just doodles hanging on your parents refrigerator this is professionally done then put on your skin forever. It takes time. It takes care. It takes money! 😯 Graphic designers and other artists get the same kind of bozos thinking they can get their stuff for free or discounted because "art isn't a job, it's a hobby". People need to know they aren't just paying for the art they are paying for artist's time. If all these artists did all these drawings for free then they wouldn't have time for things they are actually making money with and they have a greater opportunity to have their art stolen and someone else does the tattoo. At that point they lost money. That sucks! Just like any other business the paying customer is the top priority. I feel it's not a hard concept to grasp but for other it may be a little more difficult, I suppose. If you don't like the price of the art then I guess you didn't really want that tattoo.
@kaylidiaz0616
@kaylidiaz0616 5 лет назад
Sage Taylor I wouldn’t say that’s overpriced when you factor in the equipment they have to have and maintain, replacement needles (new one after every tattoo), ink, amongst a lot of other items that they have to buy themselves. They also have to pay to have a slot in the shop so really you should also be tipping for the service as well.
@crayhack
@crayhack 5 лет назад
So sometimes I think it's probably because they are unsure if it'll turn out as something they like. Like I don't want to pay for something that doesn't look the way I imagine it to look. Problem with that is, if I wanted it to look exactly how I imagine, I should do it myself. I can't so I give my best description to someone and pay them to make their interpretation of that.

my brother got a sleeve done in a day. He has an extremely high pain tolerance. The artist didn’t think he would be able to handle it, but he did. They ended up giving him a lot of free merch. That being said, the sleeve was just a repetitive pattern - which I’m not saying isn’t painstaking for the artist, and they did make the appointment for it a few days prior still - but it did reduce the time spent in preparation.

Thank you for explaining the deposit process. I didn’t know that you could tell them you didn’t want the tattoo after they drew it for you, so I ended up getting it anyways. I suggested a different placement and the artist was very strict about where he wanted it so I just went with it. I feel like I had to follow through bc he already Drew it out. The tattoo he gave me is way too light and looks like a child’s henna tattoo. I hate it and it was the most expensive tattoo I’ve ever gotten, $500 for a small cyber sigel band that took 1.5 hours, out of the artists home. @matchboxmango I've always delt with the same 2 artist and anytime I've had a appointment I've onlly had to wait about 20min for them to get setup and ready plus maybe another 5min or so to shave area and thoroughly clean area to be tattooed. Personally though I prefer dealing with the wife artist simply because she has a very soft hand so by far less pain than her husband who has a heavier hand and kinda drills into you sometimes but then again my skin tends to be a bit tougher than most so sometimes they don't really have much of a choice but to drill into me in order to get the ink nice and vibrant. Lmao

It's worse when you see that "artist" is hurrying - checking the clock, etc. and then after you need to tell him that there are spots where he missed, went too fast with the outline so it fallout etc. I think golden rule is pick the best of the style in your country even if it means waiting more or saving more money.

Well for the same reason someone says that when they get their hair done or their makeup: if they have their appointment booked at a day they have something else (silly I know but it happens) they might get anxious they won't be there on time so they want to hurry the process Or because they are in pain sometimes they might say like "hurry up I want this done with" which is silly considering they could just ask for a break or something but I suppose it is another reason why someone might say that

I love this. I am 29. I have always wanted to be covered in tattoos but I am an artist myself (not a tattoo artist) but I am very hesitant because I don't know who I can trust to get a tattoo that I will be happy with. this was very helpful because I don't want to offend or make an artist mad if I have certain requests. very helpful and I have faith I will still have a ton of tattoos before I die lol just need to find good artists....I don't live anywhere where I know of good tattoo artists in my opinion. thanks for this video. this definitely helps a lot...let's people know what is more helpful than irritating to the artists. like letting them know the kind of style I want or the imagery or whatever.i understand certain tattoo artists are better at certain styles and details. so I wanna be able to communicate what I want without offending. I know they are expensive either way but I'd rather start out with lines and shading and if I want color let it heal and go in for color later. this was a great video ♥️♥️🤘

It's very different, but I relate to this as someone who does makeup🤦‍♀️Some people expect a full beat face with amazing details, colors and perfect skin and blending in just 20 minutes like no girl/boy, you want a great outcome then you can't rush the artist. Of course makeup comes off quick so you definitely wouldn't want to rush your tattoo artist cause that's permanent, unless you get it removed which 1) is expensive and 2) it's painful

Truth. You never know how long you'll be there. I always clear my schedule. An artist could guestimate 3 hours, but it could actually run you 5 hours. Best rule of thumb is to assume the worst case scenario and completely clear your schedule and expect to stay longer. If it's a piece you're paying good money for, why rush it?

This is why I started paying my Tattoo artist in advance for the design and then payment when I get the tattoo. We worked together on a sleeve and built trust over time. He helped me out when I got hit with some unexpected financial fees and I paid him 50% extra for my next tattoo because he had spent a lot of time resizing and making sure it fit perfectly. We're great friends now and I built his son his first gaming PC. He was there for me as a friend when I needed it. It's great. Respect for their time and work and authenticity goes a huge way.

I had an art teacher who once told us that while your sketching around the city someone will eventually ask to buy what you are working on. They will low ball you and say something like "but it only took you a few minutes to make this" to which the proper response is "No, it's taken my whole life to make this".

@Mama_Badazh
@Mama_Badazh 2 года назад
@@jamesbianco7805 Art isn't something you just pick up and put down. A lot of artists have been trying to increase their skill since childhood. "It's taken my whole life to make this' refers to the fact that an artist has to have experiences to be able to create art. What are you going to create if you don't experience life? Absolutely nothing memorable. When we were children, it was crayons and paper. For some kids it was crayons or markers and nice blank wall space. For me, as a very young child, it was permanent markers and my mom's literary collection. Art is based in emotions tied to experiences and those do influence art. This is true for many mediums: sketch, sculpture, writing, and so on. As an amateur writer, my emotional state influences how easily a scene comes out. If I'm angry, I'm definitely not writing romance any time soon. Again, the emotion is tied to experiences from the course of my life. It would be the same with another artist. Saying 'but it only took you a few minutes to make this' cheapens the end result. Because it takes hours and hours upon hours and hours to create something that will touch or move another person. It degrades all the effort it took to reach that level. It ignores or bypasses all the frustration an artist feels when something just 'doesn't come out right'. This is one that happens often to any artist: We look at our own work and think 'something's wrong' when others look at it and say 'hey, that's pretty good'. Maybe it is. Maybe it isn't. If something is art: it will elicit an emotional response out of you. But being able to do that doesn't come overnight. It takes a long time to acquire the ability to create that response. For some people, they're still chasing that ability.

@@Mama_Badazh OHHHH STOP. Majority of tattooers... that's not what they have been working on since childhood hood. Most had average jobs such as construction or law assistant and then one day decided to tattoo. Majority of tattooers are not artists and they will admit it. You're an artist? Link us to some of your work that you have sold. Saying you're an artist doesn't make it so.
@Mama_Badazh
@Mama_Badazh 2 года назад
@@jamesbianco7805 "Majority of tattooers are not artists"? The term you're looking for is 'tattooist' not 'tattooer'. It IS considered an art form, whether you want to say otherwise or not doesn't make that less true. They have to apprentice before they're allowed anywhere near skin. It's common practice for apprentices to tattoo oranges for at least a year. If you want to become licensed for tattooing, apprenticeship is a requirement. It's not something you can pick up in a day and make a living from as a professional. Also, I don't know where you get the impression that selling your work makes you an artist. Artists, like everyone else, are varied. By your own words, a guy writing songs and never selling one isn't an artist while the one writing songs for a record company is. They're both artists, one's just managed to make the right connections to turn their art into their livelihood - that's the only difference. Some of us are lucky like that. I'm not one of the lucky ones yet, but I'm still trying and working to improve my skill. If you were an artist, you'd understand. It's clear you're not. It's also clear you don't know what you're talking about.

Just give your arm the occasional pinch, practice ignoring it. It's called compartmentalization, the brains gating system for pain. As far as I've seen, tattoo is somewhere in between a cat scratch and a mild burn. With a little mental training you won't have to deal with the full pain for more than a few seconds. Hope this helps.
