The reason this show was so good is the incredible dynamic between the protagonist (Olyphant) and the antagonist (Goggings). Theses two gave us a hell of show.
And why Prime Evil wasn’t as good. Plus Raylands “love interest” wasn’t believable. I just think the actress wasn’t attractive enough compared to Ava, The Bartender and his Ex. Plus the set up for him and her to meet up didn’t have any spark or connection. Just felt forced.
Make no mistake, while Olyphant is one of my favorites, Walton Goggins was the jelly to Tim’s peanut butter. One of the best buddy themed productions of all time
And of course that is why the ending lines between them are arguably the best ending of any series ( my own number 1 with Better Call Saul a close second and the The Shield being the 3rd )
I was totally amazed by Damon Herriman who played Dewy Crowe. I looked into his bio and was amazed to read he is an Aussie. That just impressed me even more that he pulled off the role so perfectly.
It's funny if you think about one main reason why Justified worked so well. It was that "will they or won't they" formula so many shows do with potential romantic partners. Constantly teasing two characters getting together making you want to keep watching to see if it ever happens. That's actually what they did with Raylan Givens and Boyd Crowder, but instead of romance it was more bromance, seeing if they would eventually stop fighting with each other and become friends again. They kept teasing with moments in episodes where one helps the other, the same way other shows would tease moments shared between the potential romantic partners, lol.
I think this is more to a kin to the cat and mouse trope. Although there is overlap between the 2, there is a difference where one is trying to catch the other while at the same time sharing so kindred aspect and/scene of friendship. Tom and Jerry is a great example of this lol.
Also, to add to #12, in the episode and the scene where Wade Messer played by James LeGros dies, the hikers who "rescued" Dewey said "we gotta get him out of here, Pronto". I would argue that they used the word "Pronto" to tip the hat at James LeGros and the TV movie Pronto where he portrayed Raylan Givens.
Walton Goggins is an amazing actor who doesn't get enough credit. His role in The Righteous Gemstones, Baby Billy, is fantastic. And of course Venus Van Dam on Sons of Anarchy is gold!!
A couple of other bits of trivia; the hat Raylan is famous for is different from the book and show. While the TV movie and series depicts it as a Stenson (with Elmore Leonard himself describing the one from Pronto as looking like it was ready to take off at any moment), in the books it’s a Boss of the Plains. In other words, the kind that Boone wears in the last season. Also, they changed Raylan’s background by removing the his service in the Marine Corps, as shown by his inability to get into a VFW hall in one episode.
My daughter no longer is a teenager but I understand perfectly what you mean even though I got lucky and mine never gave me huge headaches , but still its stressful to deal with them.
Late fan of “Justified.” Discovered it on hulu and have been binge watching it b4 starting the new series. Timothy O is so appealing both on and off camera! 😍
I am such a fan that I watched all of Justified and was overjoyed to see Justified Evil !! Timothy Oliphant is the embodiment of what the federal lawman , in my mind, would be. The writing and all the actors are wonderful too watch and when the season is over I can’t wait till the next one. Thanks for this video!❤
Have recently revisited the series AND watched Pronto. Yes it's forgettable but interesting, and worth noting that the famous "you take one more step and I'll shoot you" scene is ripped directly from it. Justified is a classic and I can't wait for Primeval.
According to Olyphant himself Tarantino did not give him the idea. Olyphant and a writer were kicking around the idea and one day while on the set of OUATIH speaking with QT he broached the subject. QT said he loved the book and had considered making it into a movie. He then encouraged Olyphant to make the show agreeing it was a great idea.
Through the first season, Raylan keeps using the word, “Justified” to talk about his Miami shooting. Having him say the word acts on the shows behalf. City Primeval is good, worth watching, but it really misses Goggings. Walton was so good during the first go round. He is missed.
Here's one thing YOU didn't know about Justified: The character of Karen Sisco played She was played by Jennifer Lopez in the 1998 film Out of Sight was played again by Carla Gugino in the 2003 series titled Sisco. Gugino reprised the role, with the character now using her married name of Karen Goodall (to avoid trademark infringement) in the Justified episode "Cut Ties".
I read the original CITY PRIMEVAL and enjoyed Elmore Leonard's gritty Detroit story. But I LOVED it as a Raylan Givens vehicle. My only 2 cents is that the actor playing Clement Mansell didn't make the character "jump off the page" as he did in the novel. I think I needed more psychotic charm. Anyway, new JUSTIFIED eps/movies, please!
Justified original run = 9/10 Justified City Primeval = 2/10 JCP was terrible on so many levels, and watered down the brand to the point of turning bourbon into dishwater. The most disgusting aspects were Raylan's involvement with the she-beast lawyer, and not putting Clem Caddilhopper in the ground earlier. The dumbest aspect was even involving a USM in that case at all, never gonna happen.
the scenes in the original Justified between Boyd and Raylan, just priceless!!! Both actors absolutely perfect for the roles. I like the new Justified Primeval, bit different, but Raylan is pretty much the same, just grayer
It took me a little time to get use to marshal Givens in Detroit. However, the marshal's experience and cunning was well demonstrated in 'City Primeval'. I definitely need more 'Justified'. Again kudos the 'Justified'.
Fantastic casting on the original series. I can't imagine anyone else than Walton and Tim playing those roles. Boyd was one of the best antagonists in TV history.
Another interesting thing about Justified: In the later seasons, the writer VJ Boyd, who is a fan of Dallas sports talk station The Ticket, inserted a ton of easter eggs from the station into the show. Many of the new characters in the later seasons were named after show hosts and lots of inside jokes known to fans of the station were inserted into the script. My favorite one was Dewey Crowe mixing up onus and anus, which was the same mistake a host on The Ticket actually did made live on air.
Justified is easily one of my favorites all time shows from any genre, I'm actually excited for the new reboot on primeval, it doesn't have the wealth of characters that the first series had but that's tough to replicate since the first one was masterful when it came to character development and writing. Having said that Timothy is excellent again, and he hasn't lost any of the Rayland Givens touch, that magical balance between badass and good guy without turning into a cliche. Awesome video from your part, I'm looking forward from seeing more videos from you, keep up the good work. 👍
Great rundown man! I love justified and deadwood! And had no idea that Jeff Spicaro wrote the opening music. It doesn't Surprise me, the guys of Toto were the studio musicians for EVERYBODY for a hell of a long time
I loved the series so much that I actually read the books! A couple of years ago I listed my top tv series of all time, and Justified was definitely near the top. Others were Rome, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones (except for the last season), Band of Brothers and Firefly.
7:50 "...who apparently spent a lot of her first day on set dispelling the bad-ass persona her father had spent years creating, much to her dad's annoyance." 😂😂😂😂Oh man, I love her already.
Congress needs to pass a law stating that neither Sam Elliot or Tom Selleck are ever allowed, under any circumstances, to shave their respective mustaches. They both look wrong without them.
I'm glad that somebody took the time to point out the alumni in this show, a further aspect is how much performer bleed over there is from deadwood to sons of anarchy. I scanned every episode, during broadcast looking for the next familiar face from either other show.
Anyone also noticed that many Justified actors played small roles in the TV show, the Mentalist? I wonder what the connection was between those 2 shows.
Justified was amazing! The spin-off thus far is only three episodes in so I reserve judgement. Not as crazy about it thus far! I miss many of the characters from Justified! Especially Art and Walton Goggins’ character.
City Primeval is a waste of good talent. What made Justified so good was Raylan and Boyd playing off each other. They were both spectacular characters. Add to that Raylan’s ‘Justified’ attitude of shoot first ask questions later and you had an addictive show to watch. City Primeval lacks a charismatic bad guy AND Raylan seems hesitant to shoot even when his daughter is in danger.
Gee, you’re right! It was absolutely awful. I feel sorry for Timothy. It’s like they used him as a piece of furniture. He had hardly any lines through the whole series. Everyone in the show thought they were the star and consequently overacted even the smallest part.
Justified: City Primeval lacks the rich southern resonance of Justified, but that's appropriate I suppose! It has a pretty cool aesthetic of its own, it's still a quality show, and it's great to get new Raylan Givens screen time.
I love Justified City Primeval! I have to admit that I am a late fan of the original series. I streamed the entire series & I just love Timothy Olyphant as Raylan Givens. I do miss Boyd in the new series & the chemistry between Raylan & Boyd. I love the interactions between Raylan & his daughter. I am hoping that more Justified will be forthcoming. 🤞❤
The new series has a similar tone to the original. Great villain and Raylan once again, trying to balance his personal life with his not so easy job as a Deputy Marshall.
I was a fan of Raylan Givens from Pronto, the book, on. He appears by mention in other Elmore Leonard stories, so it got to be a quest, finding where he'd mention the Marshall. I read everything Leonard wrote, except a few of the early Westerns (he never impressed me as Western writer, the way he captured Detroit criminality, wherever it might be occurring). The 1st Season of Justified was rocky, explaining your comment that it wasn't a "ratings darling". Critics are talking heads, who are best left to discussing technical issues, not making ones' mind up for one. Obviously, the writers strayed from the script, but Elmore was involved, during the first four seasons, more or less directly, The changes didn't detract from the story, but opened new avenues to explore with the existing principals. The actors selected for the key roles were ideal, a rarity in el-cheapo productions, as the 1st Season definitely was. There was enough of the original storyline to fuel the first three seasons, followed by two seasons of divergent storylines, sorta connected by interactions among the key players, and a last one kinda limping along on the popularity created by their antecedents. In the 5th Season, Elmore's death left the writers to their own devices. The last, 6th season starts out great, then meanders to an unsatisfying conclusion, because the actors wanted to "do other things", after six years.
It’s because of the awesome series, Deadwood that we started watching Justified. Deadwood ended too soon. Justified was a salve for that itch Deadwood created.
I am still a fan of Tim’s. I very much enjoyed his performance of Raylan and I love the new series too. It’s even funnier with his actual daughter playing Raylan’s daughter in Primeval. Find a spot for Nick and Walt PLEASE LOL
I don’t watch a lot of tv but I love justified and primeval. I like the character rylan givens. I think I will read the novels you mentioned in this video.
I also recommend Elmore Leonard westerns, especially 'Hombre" which was made into a movie with Paul Newman. Library of America has reprinted several Elmore Leonard crime novels and westerns.
The first series was fantastic . The second one , I'm not so sure about . Something seems missing with the new series and I can't put my finger on it .
One other item of trivia. In the movie When Trumpets Fade about the battle of the Huertgen Forest in WWII, Timothy Olyphant plays Lt. Lucas and Ron Eldard (Colton Rhodes) plays his sergeant.
I love the new justified Raylan Givens puts a certain zip on being a United States Marshal, but this new, wild man that they have created is crazier than Boyd Crowder could ever be
Fun Fact: By my count, at least 1 person is killed in each episode of Justified which totals at least 78 demises over the 6 seasons. I realise that there were multiple demises during the series (Mexican border shoot out, Miami hit team at the cabin etc) So does anyone know the final tally of demises in Justified? - cos it must be said, Sons of Anarchy seemed to play on their demise count as part of its marketing, but it pales into the Harlan County dust when compared to the brutality of the blood-soaked blue grass of Kentucky!
Your shot of the set of City Primeval is actually a shot of the Vancouver Art Gallery. Beside that,, though, this was very informative. I liked Vivian Olyphant in Primeval. But I think City Primeval sux.
I like the new Primeval series, it's a good reboot showing an older wiser and more fatherly Rayland. I hope they continue the new series at least for a few seasons ... I see an opportunity for willow to go into law enforcement much to Rayland's dismay
Enjoyed your video. Interesting info. LOVE JUSTIFIED. NOT a show I'd normally watch but I LOVED Raylan and Boyd and Art and several other characters. Did not like the character Dickie but the actor that plays him is obviously very good. Saw him on Lucifer and he LOOKED the SAME, unfortunately, and gave a very good performance still a bad guy but a bad guy with a conscience. OMG!!! just read @cymanca's comment about peanut butter n jelly and THAT IS a PERFECT ANALOGY!!! I'll say no more!!
