Young Guns was one of the best westerns of the 1980's, featuring a perfect performance from Emilio Estevez as Billy The Kid alongside his fellow Regulators, all born from an idea from screenwriter John Fusco, who was inspired to bring a historically accurate, action-packed slice of the wild west to the big screen.
So this documentary will break down twenty things you probably never knew about Young Guns (1988), covering all the most interesting easter eggs, references and behind the scenes stories from the making of this nostalgic western, including what was really in the Peyote, the Tom Cruise cameo that you never noticed and what Emilio Estevez really thought of Young Guns being a lifelong fan of Sergio Leone.

Emilio Estevez apparently lobbied pretty hard to get the role. I guess originally they wanted Kiefer Sutherland to play Billy and Emilio to play Doc. I'm glad Emilio got the role of Billy though, such a natural for that part!

The best scene from Young Guns is when Billy calls down to the sheriff. Billy: "Hey Peppin!" Peppin: "I'm hearin ya Bonney." Billy: "I see ya got Charlie Crawford down there with ya." Peppin: "Yeah, we got a whole bunch...." A shot to the head takes out the man standing next to Peppin. Billy: "Hey Peppin, Charlie Crawford ain't with ya anymore." Billy's maniacal laugh gets me every time. lol It would have been funny if Billy named another guy near the sheriff and that guy gets scared and runs away.

Same here I enjoyed both those movies and it was actually young guns that got me into hockey ironically. I always liked the classics of the 80's and 90's movies instead of all the new stuff they were putting out for children my age, watched YGs because I had a crush on Emilio at the time so I started trying to find other movies of his which is harder than you think back before the internet and found Mighty Ducks with him as coach. Seeing this as a thirteen year old was incredible. It was the first western I though of as being made for me rather than for my dad, and I thought Silverado was kind of a crossover movie for both of us. Saw Young Guns multiple times in the theatre that summer and convinced several friends to watch it with me instead of them seeing Die Hard. I saw both Young Guns and Young Guns 2 in the theater. I own both on DVD, i can't even remember how many times I've watched both of these classic, naustolgic movies. I know every line and scene. It's crazy but it's all seered into my brain. These men were the prime actors of the 80s amongst the others. The Brat Pack made the 80s movies that brought us... Young Guns 1 and 2 Pretty in Pink Breakfast Club Sixteen Candles Lucas 3 O'clock High St. Elmos Fire Class The Outsiders Rumble Fish Wisdom That Was Then This Is Now So many more. If you were a teen n the 80s these guys made up your decade in theatre. I recently watched Andrew McCarthy in a Bio on Hulu that he made about the Brat Pack. He met up with a few of the 80s actors we all ❤ and they talked about the Brat Pack lable. Some cursed it, some wanted to be in it, some accepted it. I don't think the ones cursing it realize what their movies and The Brat pack meant to us 80s teen brats. It made them who they are and gave us continued memories that we pass down to our kids. Good wholesome, fun movies. Maybe they felt it hindered then being labled with that brand. But it was a blessing too.

I'm a bit of a novice Western historian, and always loved Billy the Kid, but not just the legend, or even the real man, but the countless (mis?)interpretations of his life and story. I have not seen all of the films/shows, but all that I have seen just goes to show how legends are born. Truth can be received without fully being understood, and sometimes a simple shift in perspective can recontextualize an entire event or story. I love that there is still so much passion in telling this story, because honestly, you can tell it a hundred more times a hundred different ways, and it's just as interesting as the first time.

What makes this movie is the speeches that Estevez makes. The one about pals in this movie and the one about finish the game in the second. Both give me chills

Growing up with watching The Duke and Clint, Young Guns held its own in a very rock n roll kinda way. Raw, gritty, emotional, dark, comical, it really had it all. Great cast, story, locations, were all top notch. YG 1 & 2 are on my short list of western classics.

No. "Wisdom" is his best work. "That Was Then This is Now" and "The Breakfast Club" are right behind.

I like the second one best, but that's mainly because I have a soft for Petersen and Slater, they're always entertaining. The other main reason is because it hits the ground running because we already know most of the star characters and their back stories. That awesome Bon Jovi song helps too!!!

In 1990, while I was in the US Army, got deployed to the Persian Gulf with the 1st Cavalry Division. Young Guns 2 had just came out, in August I think. In our initial staging area, there was a natural depression in the desert next to the Persian Gulf shoreline that had a big flat cliff face; kind of a natural amphitheater. The Division, or at least a big part of it, was mustered there one night where they projected Young Guns 2 onto the cliff face, with speakers surrounding the top. That is one of my favorite memories from my early life. Plus, Judas Priest had just come out with Painkiller, which in my opinion was a great soundtrack for that war

Probably in the top ten most underrated films of the 80s. I feel like people looked at this as a brat-pack version of a western, but tis much much more, especially when you have heavy western hitters like Jack Palance, and also the great Terrance Stamp. It's also a rare situation where a sequel is just as good as the first (Young Guns II). Love it. Watched it obsessively growing up. And always pointed at Tom Cruise cameo to my Mom at the end shootout scene. Ha. I haven't even watched the video yet, but I'm sure you'll back me up on this.

I didn't think I'd learn anything new but I really did. Great video. The first one is my favourite. I watched it recently after a decade or so. Still knew every line. Estevez played Billy as a sociopath and it was quite a thing to watch. The first movie has much more heart simply because of the Charlie Bowdry character. Learning that the woman was meant to be his real mother...wow! The main criticism I have is the slo mo in the finale and the point where it looks like Chavez pushes Steve off the horse. The second one is good, but the tone is so different. I don't watch it over and over. However, I do like the cheeky scenes where Billy's in jail awaiting trial.
