Open Range is one of my top westerns of all time. The portrayal of cowboys is so real and I love the relationship between Boss and Charlie. I could binge watch this movie over and over. Great video. Thanks so much.
Yes, Open Range has enough grit and honesty to come across as really authentic. Don't get me wrong. I like Clint in his westerns but they have an element of the stylized and surreal.
One of my favourite westerns! Kevin got it just right. He turned into a wonderful filmmaker, and his acting has always been first class. Kevin Costner is a true Hollywood legend.
I had a Birds Eye view to the whole movie as I had a part in it… as one of Mac’s boys. (14 in the credits) Being in the gunfight, saloon scene, mop-up of the gunfight … it gave me a great perspective of this video you just made. Another thing you didn’t know was the set he built was excellent and the beautiful native reserve that he built it on was going to use the set to hire it out for other movies in the future. After filming stopped, they were cleaning up and burning debris, and the town actually caught on fire accidentally and the whole thing burned down. Very sad! The barn that Percy was in was exquisite and the set was excellent. I ended up with 18 days on set and worked with Kevin and Robert in my first scene and first day … my dialogue scene with both. Quite a moment for a young actor to come to set and first day to be alongside those icons … me being from Calgary Alberta only 45 minutes drive from set. Kevin was “pained” and intense … it seemed. But professional and so Personal at the same time. But we all know why later as we found out he was suffering with a lot of pain from appendix issues. My wife I like to dance and went out to a local Latin dance place after our first day of shooting and Robert and his wife were there, as she was from Argentina. It was very surreal in Calgary at a place we like to dance at, sitting next to and chatting with Robert and his wife… as a coworker. I have been overseas with the military in 1993 peacekeeping, as an infantry soldier, and had watched “apocalypse now”… and made a comment to my buddy that wouldn’t it be amazing to work with Robert Duvall as a young actor. Few years later my buddy was watching open Range and there I was working with Robert Duvall… It was one of those moments in life for sure!! Probably one of my favorite films was “Robin Hood, Prince of thieves” or “untouchables” and of course, “dances with wolves”… So to be auditioning and then get picked to work on this film was quite an experience for a Calgary actor. I will always cherish my time on that set and project… And I really enjoyed your video.
Open Range has a very special place in my heart as it was one of the few movies my grandfather and I got to see in theaters together. Over the next 10 years up until his death in 2013, I think he watched Open Range more than any other Western.
I love this movie! It has romance, the big shoot em out and I'm sorry to hear that Kevin and Robert were in such pain. No one could tell. A fabulous job of acting and directing. Also ready for more Horizon!
Highly underrated movie! One of my favorite westerns ever made. Some people just don‘t seem to get Costner and that‘s just fine by me. I adore the crap out of him and his storytelling
@@thenarrator1984 I don't know how anyone could choose a list of the top ten westerns of all time. So many great ones and it all comes down to personal favorites. But maybe one way to choose them is that if you could only have ten western movies in your personal movie collection, only ten, which ten would it be.
@@TS-wh4ey I think it's easy. Unforgiven Last of the Mohicans(it's a western sort of) Wyatt Earp. Dances with Wolves Open range. That's too five of all time.
@@thenarrator1984 I could list maybe five that I would have to keep in my ten only collection of western movies. 1 The Good The Bad and The Ugly 2 Rio Bravo 3 Hour Of The Gun 4 El Dorado 5 Open Range 6 Tombstone 7 The Outlaw Jose Wales 8 Last Train From Gun Hill 9 Unforgiven 10. ( Undecided )
@@thenarrator1984 Well I could think of five that I would keep in my ten only western movie collection. 1 The Good The Bad and The Ugly 2 Rio Bravo 3 Hour Of The Gun 4 Open Range 5 Tombstone 6 ( Undecided ) 7 ( Undecided ) 8 ( Undecided ) 9. ( Undecided ) 10 ( Undecided )
I live about two hours from where this was filmed in southern Alberta. Truly one of the finest homages to the settlement of the west ever filmed. Costner really brought the old West to life.
Along with Unforgiven and The Searchers, Open Range is IMHO one of the best westerns ever made. Admittedly The Searchers was a stylized 50's version of what people thought a western should be, but the story line runs much, much, deeper. And although the shootout of Open Range may have been what got it the 'R'' rating, the shootout is one of the most realistic and authentic scenes. Contrary to popular belief, shootouts on the American frontier were very brief, very chaotic, and very violent. Something that Costner captures extremely well in Open Range. Have not yet seen Horizon but plan to very soon.
The opening of the final gun fight is one of the greatest. This, Appaloosa and The Searchers. And Once Upon a Time in the West. And the no name triliogy are the best.
one of my favorite westerns of all time. every time this movie is on TV I put it on even for background noise. incredible actors, plot, scenery cinematography...etc.
It was really refreshing to see a movie that was able to do away with the 1950's Hollywood creation of the "fast draw" scene. The shootout scene in Open Range was much more realistic with the combatants using their sights instead of shooting from the hip.
IMHO Open Range is that kind of movie that just keeps giving. Obviously I was all for a good shoot em up, but Kevin brought so many small things into the movie that made you take pause. The beauty for one. The discussion between Duvall and the storekeeper about chocolate. The character of Micheal Jeter. What an incredible movie. Will go down as one of my all time favorite westerns.
I've watched this movie six or seven times and will probably watch it again and again. It's my all time favorite and I'm a western nut that has watched hundreds.
I love this movie. Robert Duval is one of my all time favorite actors and the chemistry between him and Kevin Costner was outstanding and so natural. I saw it in the theater and loved the grandeur of the cinematography. It was breathtaking. One of my top five favorite westerns. I have not seen Horizon yet but am looking forward to it…
Robert Duvall. Can't stand him in almost anything. But I absolutely love both open range and lonesome Dove. And he was in second hand lions too was good
At the time of writing, I have only viewed Part 1 of Horizon. Nevertheless, I would still go with Horizon. This has been a passion project of Costner's for well over 30 years, and it absolutely shows. A truly great movie and I look forward greatly to the remaining parts.
I have watched this movie so many times I know the entire script . I would go to sleep at night with it playing when I was having trouble sleeping. I loved it
I loved Open Range, and part one of Horizon. Looking forward to seeing the other parts! But I didn't know Michael Jeter had passed away until I saw this video. So sorry to hear that.
For us, we normally do NOT read or pay attention to reviews, especially the Hollywood Reporter. First of all-we are fans of the western genre(we donate every year to the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum), second, we give the people the benefit of the doubt. Especially Kevin Costner, who has a background for this sort of thing.
I’d have to go with Open Range, but it’s not truly a fair comparison as I’ve only seen Part 1 of Horizon. Even though I liked it, it’s designed to leave you hanging and make you want to see Part 2, it’s not meant to be taken as a standalone film. Even though it’s 3 hours long, so many characters and situations are introduced that you don’t get to know them in any depth and of course the majority of the storylines are left unanswered. I can’t help but feel it would have been more financially successful as a Miniseries like Lonesome Dove.
I’m willing to bet that’s where it’s going to get its popularity. Much like how the hateful eight was better received once it was broken up into episodes on streaming services, I think that’s where this movie will get its flowers.
Open Range is a top notch western. Costner and Duvall had great chemistry. Boss confronting the crooked sheriff in front of all the patrons in the restaurant was a fantastic scene. Only thing i dont like is revolvers firing more than 6 shots.
LOL! Yes. As someone who knows a good bit about firearms I always try to keep count of how many rounds were fired. I always think to myself "Man, I gotta' get one of those 14 round revolvers!!"
Open Range is a very underrated western. It's a great movie... no flaws. There's an authentic feel to it. It's the quietness culminating in the gunfight at the movies' end that makes it feel real. Most modern action films are more like cartoons, with nonstop adrenaline pumping scenes, one after another.
Hollywood Reporter... only western they'd like is Brokeback Mountain. Costner has done some great westerns Open Range, Wyatt Earp, Danced with Wolves and he's in one of my all time favorites... Silverado. And I don't know why they hate on Postman. I really liked that movie. Just because it's not a big box-office hit doesn't mean it's bad.
Wow ; i did not know that. Very impressive information. I won't be able to see Horizon until I can purchase on a streaming device , as we have no theaters here in rural Ontario. I am a great fan of Open Range and have watched it many times.
The injury to Duvall and Costner's illness added to the authenticity of the film, as men working on the range would surely be in pain by their ages. It was a hard life.
Fun fact: There's a town in Utah called "New Harmony", which is where a very similar situation played out. Also, New Harmony is still inhabited, last I drove through. 🧐
You can’t put these two movies against each other. First of all, we don’t even get to see Part Two of Horizon on the big screen! Second, they are both wonderful movies with wonderful characters in them. Kevin Costner does not make sloppy movies. Kevin Costner is one of the best writers, actors, directors in the business today. Both movies are amazing, just like Kevin Costner!
Open Range was an excellent production! Directed well, and Costner played Charlie to a tee. Duvall was the perfect Boss. Just a fantastic movie. I'd put it above KB, Matrix, and slightly above the Tolkien movies. Integral work, and non-hollywood oriented which is ALWAYS a plus, OR will likely be topped by Horizon. I have never experienced a shorter 3 hours in my life. Set your Costner-hate aside, and go see this new movie.
Unfortunately I haven’t seen Horizon but I thought Open Range was a great movie. I love western movies. I think Kevin Costner n Clint Eastwood are one the best directors.
Loved Open Range ,think I set the world record of ice cube spitting when he capped that derby hat dude who admitted that he killed his friend ,and loved it ,BAM! that ice cube may still be in orbit lol
Really enjoyed this insight into one of my all time Top 10 westerns. Thank you. But wasn’t it The Fisher King that got Michael Jeter noticed as a character actor in Hollywood? Along with the Green Mile? I don’t think anyone cared about people’s acting chops in Jurassic Park 3, did they? I mean, it wasn’t a, “bad,” movie, but it wasn’t all that good either. And it would be hard to argue that movie earned anyone a casting spot anywhere else, when Jeter was by then a familiar face to movie goers? The Fisher King was his first break from TV into movies and a memorable performance that won him some minor award nominations nevertheless. I know, I splitting hairs a bit, but that’s what movie buffs are for, right? But, thanks regardless. You have great taste in movies.
Open Range is a fantastic movie and Annette Benning has always been a beautiful woman. For those of you who haven't broken a rib, the narrator says it isn't a big deal, uh.... Yes it is. It's excruciating. Every time you breathe it hurts like crazy.
If he wanted to capture the magic of Open Range, Costner could have taken on the Duvall role of mentor and leader in Horizon. Instead, once appearing an hour in to the movie, he’s a loner who immediately gets the girl, and kills a man when we have barely understood what’s at stake. Life is hard out in the west, but in Horizon, even the women kind of rebound easily after their husband/father are killed. There are no pathetic characters to show you just how hard it was, like the character of Button in Open Range. We just recently saw Costner hook up with younger woman in Yellowstone. Now that he’s again hooking up with a 30 year old prostitute, one has to conclude that: Costner’s still got the look, but, in typical boomer fashion, is not ready to pass the baton on.
