When my daughter was small, every so often we would have an art show. I would hang up her paintings, ceramics, etc. and invite the grandmothers, aunts, and so on. We would have snacks and beverages set up like an art gallery opening. Everyone could pick some artwork to take home or I would frame a picture for them from time to time. Discussions about the art and so much fun. Best declutter ever!

The last comment about scanning the house and thinking if it would look good in crime scene photos made me laugh, because the way I console myself for how messy my house gets sometimes is by saying, "Well, if someone breaks in, I'll definitely hear them coming and they'll probably twist their ankle, too." 😅😅

My hint for decluttering clothing is that if I wear it and I don't love it, I turn it inside outside. That means that when it comes out of the dryer, it goes straight to the donate bin.

I think of it more like, if I had to call an ambulance during the night, how would it look? - For the record I know that EMTs aren’t looking at your home when they are giving someone life-saving treatment and I also know from experience that when you call for an ambulance in an emergency, you don’t think about anything else, but afterwards, you take a look around and it is one of your thoughts, “does it look like they need to call social services for my loved one?” 😂

There are three daily tasks that I am "religious" about. When I get up, I immediately make the bed. Once a week, I change our sheets. I make sure the kitchen sink is cleared and clean every night before going to bed and the living room is picked up and blankets and pillows neatly put away. I'm far from a perfect housekeeper, but minding those few little tasks really give me a good start to my day! 😊 P/S Yes, to the towel hooks instead of towel bar! 😊

@@SilverGirl-925 I had to clear out my father's house and then two years later, my mother's house. I think that people who went through the Depression and/or WWII are savers. I cleared out my father's house with two of my cousins and we did it in a week. I tried to donate things, but there was just to much of it and I only had a week to do it in. I ended up lining big black garbage bags three deep along the entire front of the property. My cousin then put a notice on Craig's list to "come and get it." They came in trucks and hauled away a lot of it. I had more time with my mother's house but she had much more stuff. I'm hoping not to put my daughters through that but no matter how much I donate or throw out, there will be stuff.

Re Phone Charging area....We constantly use our charging cords (There are 5 of us), so we leave them plugged into the outlet. Next to the outlet is a woven basket with holes large enough to weave cords through it. We simply grab the cord and charge the phones right in the basket. It hides everything and there is no need to always be searching for the cords and needing to reinsert them into the outlet. Also, the cords are not cluttering up the counter.

One of the best things I ever did was when my daughter was pregnant with my first granddaughter I made her an email with her name and then I decided to do it for each one of my daughters. I have three of them and then each one of my grandkids, I have seven emails but things that I want to save pictures they made. I’ll take a picture of it and upload it into the email and anything I just might wanna say to them and then every year when I get a new date book for my purse, I I write everyone’s email and all the passwords once a year and they all know where it is and it’s just a simple to remember things. He always seem to forget because life gets busy and you do forget the small things and just pictures that you want to save that you don’t have a place to put them. I reread one of my oldest granddaughters emails I sent, and when she noticed her toes she used to growl at her toes. Every time she saw them she’s growl like a dog cutest thing, but I totally forgot about that and I would’ve never remembered that in 1 million years if I didn’t email it to her, just a thought when you were talking about keeping things places and easy place and everybody has an email with their own name. Already saved for them.

He writes LETTERS in each text, he is a very intelligent deep thinker with a lot to say and i cherish every word. I screenshot them before deleting. At first I had intended to print them out & keep them in a notebook, but now there's so many of them it would be a MASSIVE undertaking. So now I'm open to suggestions on how to keep them, organized & accessible. Don't know if my phone has any extra space for storing more of them. 😂

Instead of using cloths to catch the excess water around your soap by your sink, you can use these diatomaceous earth coasters. They are very good at absorbing water. I use them as hand soap coasters and under my water glass that I use to rinse my mouth after brushing my teeth. You can get short ones or longer ones, and they are a nice minimalistic way to prevent water drips near sinks.

I just did this for Christmas! I wanted two holiday looking tablecloths but couldn't find any I liked so while walking around Walmart I decided to look at sheets, and found the most perfect cranberry-red sheet sets. They are plain with no designs which is even better because I can use them for other occasions. We have a rectangle dining table in a corner of our living room, with a beautiful tall lamp on it. We don't have space for a Christmas tree and haven't found the perfect small tree to put on the table so I wrap a nice classy holiday wrapping paper onto the lamp shade, then before putting it back on the lamp I slip a very thick wreath around it at the bottom, then lay a string of lights all over the wreath. Then we have the rest of the table for piling presents and cute decor. The sheet hangs down the sides almost to the floor hiding the plastic bins we store our Christmas decor in. I have since removed the red sheet & replaced it with a very pretty beige sheet that will serve us well for the rest of the year or until I want a newer one. On the much smaller kitchen table that serves as a dining table I put the fitted sheet and had to cut around it for a better fit. On top of it I keep a lovely lacy vinyl see thru tablecloth protector. I love these two solutions! Easy, affordable, and beautiful.

I have gotten to the point where I ask myself a quick question before I buy anything........Do I want to have to clean or dust this for the next 20 years? This helps me not buy impulse purchases of home decor and other things. I ask, "Do I want to dust this item for the rest of my life?" If the answer is "NO" then I walk away. Just the thought of all the extra work or clutter that builds up so quickly makes me half sick to my stomach and I can avoid buying needless extras.

I use a slightly different thought process when shopping. I get paid once a month, so when I'm tempted to buy something I really like I ask myself if I would use the item BEFORE next payday, which 90% of the time is no, so I leave it with a mental note to put it on my next month's shopping list, but by the time next month gets here I have totally forgotten about the items. Has saved me a ton of money and clutter.

My twins are hoarders. They are 12. I had enough one day and told them that if we had a fire in the house and the firefighters had to look for you in your room, it would be a hazard for them to try and find you. Plus it would be hard for you to try and get out of your room since their is so much stuff in here! They let me help them clean their room. Since they can't let go of things, we took pictures of empty toy boxes (yes there were lots of those around), we bagged up stuffed animals that we don't play with anymore but can't get rid of. They are now in the basement. We got rid of a ton of clothes also. We got them some shelves to put their Lego creations on. Their dresser is clear, I can see the floor, and I think they are happier in a room that is more organized and less cluttered.

I went through something similar with my daughter a few years ago. We had to gut her room a couple of different times before she permanently kept in order. She’s now 14 and has kept it in order for more than a year. She recently told me the three things that made it “stick:” 1. “2-minute tidy” before bed every night. I had assumed that was obvious, but apparently I hadn’t spelled that out until our 2nd or 3rd deep clean out. 2. “Don’t know what to do with this” basket. I’m sure there’s a more efficient name for this, but I eventually set up a permanent home for the items that did not have an obvious home. Now, she comes to me every few months (and growing less and less frequent) and asks for help cleaning that basket out… which is waaaay better than cleaning out her whole room! This was one of the biggest game-changers. 3. “Kiss it goodbye.” We’ve done this since her earlier childhood, but she says this has always helped her part with stuff… if there’s something that’s no longer serving her but holds some meaning, we may first take a picture of it or just skip to “kiss it goodbye and thank it for being a part of your life!” If we are donating, we also bless the next owner. If it’s not in donatable condition, we gently “bury” it in the trash. In other words, we kinda make it a ceremonial process. In most cases, it all takes less than five seconds, but some more meaningful items need a quiet moment. 😅 It’s funny, but it really helps with the parting of things. I think my kids resonated with this because I was respecting what it meant to them to part with it and I was giving them space to be “sad” about it, yet also giving them a way to channel that momentary sadness.

An Interior Designer told me years ago to always take out towel rods, and replace them with a row of coat hooks. Because you can hang 4 or 5 towels in the same space that one would fit on, if it's on a rod. If you are worried about them drying, use some Turkish towels. They are thinner but surprisingly effective.

Same for some winter jackets. Instead of having them inside of a closet on a hanger taking a lot of space, just have a spot on hooks for them close to the door. If they are moist, they'll dry there. I have a row of hooks with lots of space for jackets.

This is a major issue, according to EMTs I know. Esp as housing gets more and more expensive, and more people have to fit into a smaller space. They usually don't pare down their possessions accordingly. Then there isn't room for them to load the patient or work on them. My own mother didn't call 911 one time when she should have (after a fall where she hit her head), bc she said her xmas boxes were in the living room, and she didn't think there would be room for the EMTs. Just imagine if she had gotten a brain bleed that night. She could have died over some silly xmas decor!!

@briannab5296 3 месяца назад
Yeah that's a sore point for me & my elderly brother I take care of. We've had to call 911 several times for each other, and every time has been a hassle for the EMTS due to our small cramped apt. 😢

Whenever we travel, I do a very thorough home clean. I even have an “in case of death” binder that I put out. My husband thinks it’s a bit much, but if we die, I don’t want my loved ones coming in and seeing my house a mess. The other win is that when we come home, the house is clean and it’s so much easier to unpack and get right back into normalcy .

Hooks (stick on) are your friend for more than towels. I use them inside closets for belt, ties, etc., under the lip of everything like countertops to corral cords, etc. I keep a printer in my closet and hook the cord on a high hook(an easy reach to plug it in outside the closet door when needed. I also use long peg racks inside my closets above the door for gift wrap rolls, walking stick, umbrellas, etc., even my hubby’s rifle. Every space is vital.

Re:putting things away, I tell myself "OHIO"- only hold it once. For example, I used to fold laundry and put it back in the basket. Then you have to go back later and move it from the basket to the drawers and closet. Now I fold laundry in my bedroom and things go straight into their place. Or when we empty kids backpacks at the end of the day, lunchboxes go straight to the kitchen to get cleaned, not on the shelf or in the hallway, etc. Anyway, love your channel. Thanks for the ideas!

Recreational shopping - HA! I spent three and a half hours at Walmart yesterday waiting for them to mount my new tires. What did I do? Spent $133 and change just from walking through the whole store. Twice. And the frozen raspberries thawed because the insulated bag was in the car, up on the lift - big surprise, right? I finally sat myself down and read a book on my phone - which I should have done in the first place! Thanks for the things you talk about - always entertaining.

My father passed away and then my mother passed on shortly after that. I had to clear out and sell their house. Oh my gosh! Please think of the person who has to do that. The clutter was VAST. I made three 'categories': Trash, Charity and Auction. I also had friends come in to take things. And the memories! I'd had a 60's to 70's childhood in an unhappy home, so sometimes the memories were debilitating. All done now. All in the past. BUT - I now keep my home within the awareness of someone clearing it out.

I completely agree with the Swedish Death Cleaning idea. I'm in the US, but my abuela was in Peru. When she died, her 3 children and 3 of us grandchildren were able to go to say our last goodbyes. She was also a clutter bug and had that house for over 60 years. Having to sift through everything made the grieving process so much harder. There was only so much we could do in the week we spent there. My poor parents had to fly whenever they could to continue throwing things out, keeping certain things that they could pack in a suitcase, donating to local charities, etc. That took 3 years. After the house was sold, my mom finally started to process her feelings grieve in a way she just didn't have time, too. I'm not doing that to my kid. Oh, and after the funeral and everything, we ended up finding paperwork that my my abuela had set up and paid for everything: funeral, urn, cremation, flowers, everything. Heartbreaking. Not the cost necessarily. It was the fact that she had everything planned, but we weren't able to find it among the clutter

Hi Kallie! Your "crime scene" comment certainly has merit. Years ago we experienced a house fire. The morning of the fire I had done a whole house tidy and reset before heading out for the day. No one was home through out the day so everything was very neat and tidy when the fire broke out. Because of the presentation of the home, the firefighters took time after they had extinguished the fire to go above and beyond, including raising furniture out of the two feet of water in the basement. When the smoke had cleared (literally) the insurance adjuster told the restoration company the house had to be repaired to the level of "perfection" (her word) that was prior to the fire. Throughout the entire process, the reference back to the clean, tidy house prior to the fire was a minimum standard that was set for any sub-contractors hired as well. So yes, making sure your home presents well just in case of "unexpected" visitors or events, certainly pays off!

One thing that's really helped me is having a box with a lid that the tupperware goes in. Mine is a "Mainstays 92 piece food storage container set", but it'd work with some other box, if you could get all your containers to fit, but it also helps that most of my bowls right now came in this set and nest together and have matchy lids. This way, even though I really need to declutter the cabinet that that box goes into, if I can find that box, I can find clean containers with lids, they won't fall out or anything. Gives me a little more mental room to deal with other stuff. Just make sure items are clean and dry before they go in the sealed box!
