Recently I had the opportunity to work for Royal Caribbean photographing headshots for some of the members of their team. Here's the catch, it was all on the world's largest cruise ship, the Wonder of the Seas. Since this kind of adventure was a first for me, I decided to document it so that you could follow along on the adventure. Accompanied by my good buddy Dave, we worked hard, played hard, and enjoyed some of the great things this kind of travel has to offer.

Oh, I do have questions, but I'm not sure you'd like to answer them here. Curious, how much do you charge a company for something this? Were you tethered? Capture one? Anything added or changed in your contract for a cruise ship? Camera settings- I'll watch your other videos for that. :-)
@GaryHughesOfficial
@GaryHughesOfficial Год назад
My prices are on my website if you want to see them. This was billed as Event Headshots - Hughesfioretti.com - definitely shooting tethered into Capture 1. Camera settings F5.6 1/125 - ISO 250 I think. Thanks for watching

That's awesome. I've been cruising a lot in the past year and kinda thought it would be a cool photography gig. But I'm not sure I'd dig shooting on a moving platform all the time. This gig would be very cool. The vendor/passenger thing sounds a bit tedious. But I'm pretty envious.

The ship is so big, you can’t even tell when it’s underway. It’s basically like a sleepover at a fancy shopping mall.

I mostly used the Canon R7 with the RF 15-35mm. I am getting used to adjusting for the "wobble" caused by the IBIS system and will be able to avoid it next time
@MichelleLadlow
@MichelleLadlow Год назад
@@GaryHughesOfficial were you hand holding most of the time?
@GaryHughesOfficial
@GaryHughesOfficial Год назад
yes, definitely. No gimbal, just free hand. It is actually pretty great for that, but you gotta zoom in to about 18-20mm to avoid the wobble

I don't have a video that exactly lays out the setup in detail, but you can see it pretty clearly here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jJmXw6qMiCE.html

Gary, Do you ever have any problems with Godox misfires? I recently started using several battery powered Godox flashes , 200’s and 400’s, with my Nikon camera, and I’m missing shots due to the controller or flash units sleeping. Really painful. Ever have this problem? And what is the solution?
@GaryHughesOfficial
@GaryHughesOfficial Год назад
Sure, it's one of the disadvantages of the cheaper brands, they don't fire as consistently as a Profoto or Elinchrom. Make sure to look at the user manual to turn sleep off on your remote and flashes and that will eliminate a lot of the issues. In addition, train yourself to shoot at the right pace so you don't have misfires because you didn't wait for the unit to recycle completely. I have great success with the 200s and deal with the odd misfire (maybe one in 30-40 shots),

Question: For the lights behind the subjects were those to just add a kiss of light for consistent gray on the x drop or what it to act as a hair light? Thanks for the video!

You can get several different effects depending on the angle. Just season to taste. The background ended up being replaced on all those images, so I favored the edge light over lighting the background
@rockj8197
@rockj8197 Год назад
Did you know the background was going to be changed? Is light gray the color you go for if you know the background is going to be changed? Or do you tailor it to the color it is going to be changed to? Any other considerations to make the swap easier? 🙏

We actually talked to quite a few of the photographers on the ship and the island. Most were pretty young and green, but we were happy with the photos, just a cool way to document the adventure.
