200 Toughspikes Later : Rimworld Anomaly Ep24

That wall of flesh is a bit of a pain in the butt. It spreads rapidly and trying to trim it back causes a lot of enemy spawns. But now that we have it more conveniently located we should be able to farm it for Toughspikes for our Bioferrite farm.

One asks me “hey, is that Francis?” and I reply “yep, today’s Rimworld vid”. He turns to his friend all excited and say “we have to run home, hurry up” and off he goes. You unlocked biomutation lances! They're my favourite new item in Anomaly (other than Ghouls of course!) They're really good at letting you steal low-shield pops from pirates, and the target's gear comes out un-tainted too. Plus it has four charges! Four! It means you can use your shock lances for more important targets. Swapping a shard for 4 low-pops is a deal I'd take every time.

It seems to me that between some graves, some walls, and one of those hearts, you could fully wall a tile in so that nothing could get in or out, except through a provided passage way. It can effectively spawn walls in the zone that you can't build in yourself, and its self-repairing

When your pawns get hit with fingerspikes, etc they can be implanted with metal horrors. Something to be aware of.

TLDR, being hit by a finger spike makes no difference at all to metal horror infections or events. Apparently the way it works is the metal horror event rolls and triggers regardless of whether anyone was hit with a finger spike. It then looks for a cause similar to how flavour text is added to a statue or masterwork. IF someone was hit by a f.spike it'll use that as the cause of the parasite infection. If not it'll use some other excuse e.g infected outside of the colony. Even pawns raised as babies have been reported to get that when they've never left the colony. So don't worry when fighting the spikes, it doesn't actually matter if your pawns take hits. I learned this on AdamVsEverything stream BTW.

@@azrobbins01 I think it's because the metal horror is just another event and that's just how the event system works, it just chooses one, raid, infestation, horror etc from the pool. Might've been less work to do it like this, IDK. But yeah it's a bit weird and might be better if it did matter about being hit. Maybe it'll change.

@@azrobbins01 I think it is much simpler to program the event to retcon an origin, than to have to keep track of multiple potential sources and having to deliver those potential sources in such a way that the event will actually trigger. As you don't want someone that manages to perfectly fight off the finger spikes, to never see the metal horror. But you also don't want to punish someone that sucks at those finger spikes, to be overwhelmed with metal horrors. The current system gives better control over the event, even though the retcon is sometimes a bit weird.

Watching the FleshMass Heart grow its flesh mass around your assaulting party was straight up nightmare fuel.

You can use mechanoids in the caravan trick. Each mech in a caravan increases the carry weight of the caravan, but only pawns can pick items up. So you can just make a caravan to carry them (draft the mechanoids first), and then draft the colonist once they've picked up a bunch of waste packs and send them down the gate. You know? I'd love to see some tutorial nuggets of all the advice you get from youtube comments 🤔 You don't even need to finish the fences, just having materials delivered will prevent growth. Though you'll probably want to build some fence in front of all your doors for future flesh masses. Usually I get all 3 nerve bundles in the initial growth, but I also usually don't fight it till after it grows. It can trap your pawns if you don't have overwhelming firepower. You gotta watch it's growth cycles, it alternates between growing, and gathering mass to grow. Shamblers come in two types, approach and assault. The approach will just wander around attacking people if they see them. Assault will knock on your walls but generally only barely make it through 3 thick walls before keeling over. We've done testing on atmospheric heaters in the discord. It's 10c above normal per heater, and going above the autoignition point will *not* set things outside on fire, only things indoors will catch fire. Only fleshbeasts, ghouls, and shamblers take damage from the resulting heat.

And humans. :) How quickly can you increase the temperature? Is it quick enough that you could build like 15 atmospheric heaters but disconnect them from the grid and only reconnect them reactively as a response to a threat?

I played tribal anomaly run (normal losing is fun.) 6 recurve bows make "overwhelming firepower" to carve though fleshmass. (2 to dig through mass; 4 for protection against response). With focus on nerves you can easily end with less than 5 responses.

That's to be honest is my issue with anomaly dlc. It is balanced around 5-7 pawns and don't scale up fast enough to be fun with bigger pop.

There's a difference between shamblers "approaching" the colony and shamblers "assaulting" the colony. You can wait out shambler approaches like manhunters. Assaults destroy everything and must be dealt with. Not saying you should play it differently, just giving you the info. Also, it's been said but it's worth repeating: shamblers won't go through double doors. They'll break down a single door and will pursue colonists through them. But as soon as you have two doors between you and the horde, they will just stand around and get slaughtered. This is a bug and should be eventually patched out.

<a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="260">4:20</a> I think the reason why Xenotaph keeps going for the problematic entities instead of the neutered toughspikes is that the game doesn't register the outer room as a valid containment area (Ie: Containment strength =5), perhaps if you put a containment door on it instead of that gap (and floor the entire area with bioferrite) on the outer room it might change his pathing to one of the harmless goombas.

Had an interesting event last night, I attacked a siege group, one of the first people to die released a metal thing, which triggered 5 or 6 more from other siegers. Interesting to know that can happen

For the fleshmass heart I found some success using mortars as daisy cutters and then transport podding in materials, builders, guards, and a farskip caster to build the containment walls before skipping out. It's risky for sure, but I just couldn't sustain combat for long enough to burrow my way through - id get most of the way, and then I'd need to rest and patch up my pawns and it'd just grow back. Was not prepared with enough pawns/drugs/weapons tbh.

Peshet looked over the amount of Toughspikes they had managed to contain. She was very happy with her decision to duplicate WarMachine again and again. This manhunter pulse ability had been really handy in acquiring so many specimens. All in all, the only downside of the cloning idea was that the Machines had ... what did they call it? ... Morales! Yes, that was what that was. They cared about things. About people they didn't even know. Like ... really? Why? She had talked about that with SomeMachine once, but Peshet still didn't get it. Also, if they hated being called SomeMachine, maybe they should stop reacting to it? Her little boy - well, not so little anymore, but whatever - had started calling them SomeMachine, and now everybody did. It was just easier all around. Peshet grinned. And funny. Ah well. She turned around and went in search of some Victor. She felt like beating one up again. She hadn't done it in far too long.

Flesh mass heart is finally a wally to generate walls along the edge of your base without waiting centuries for meteors. On a map with overhead mountain you could base under the mountain and with your power brick drop pod blocking techniques make it so that the only way into your base is warship unless you specifically destroy some blocker if you want an empire shuttle or something with no valid location for drop pods or walking onto the map you would be fully immune to all none anomaly raids except infestations which could be blocked with parkas and an internal freezing temperature throughout the base. Although this would necessitate trading for food I think the trade off is best with a farming section set up with a kill box to protect your main base from bugs

Couldn't you still grow your food in the greenhouse, instead of trading? You can probably also farm insect meat, if you are willing to deal with that threat?

Yes that is what I meant with the greenhouse separate from the base you are protected via a killbox between the underground farm and the base the issue is since it is livable warm to grow crops you can still get infestations

A simplier way to be perfectly safe forever is to summon a flesh pit and live in the fleshpit. So long as you never kill the heart monster inside, it will never collapse. You don't have to worry about raids ever, you can grow mushrooms, power would be tricky but you could go low power with chemfuel.

If you're looking for a more reliable way to capture Bulbfreaks, you can use the creepjoiner with the power that mutates corpses into fleshbeasts. Just find an extra large corpse (thrumbo, megasloth, etc) and use the creepjoiner power on it--it'll turn into a single, isolated Bulbfreak which you can hit with a shock lance to down it (warning: this can cause enough damage to trigger the Bulbfreak to split, but has a higher chance of working than any other method I've tried). Bonus: The creepjoiner power has unlimited uses, and shock lances can be crafted (from shards).

@@billiarn907 I've never seen the freezer strategy before--could it also work for downed Bulbfreaks with an intact spine? I am unsure because I don't know what it takes to turn one into a nugget, but I _DO_ know the Electroharvester tends to pop them with chip damage.

Toxic waste is crazy heavy, each bag weighs 6kg. They could maybe haul 3-4 bags in their inventory and then 5 in their hands. I tend to use the caravan trick when it will save several trips, this only halves the trips so I did not bother. But it would have been faster for sure.

Build a wall at the build limit line and force the flesh mass to fill the space between the edge of the map except for a single gap. That way raids should only come through the gap you dictate.

assuming it's not changed, there's is/was a trick with the fleshmass, if you fully box your base with no doors, and leave no clutter outside it. You can let it grow around your entire base and raiders won't break it, so you are "protected" against everything but drop pods

A mod I would highly recomend for keeping track of ghouls hunger so you don't get close calls like at <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="1910">31:50</a> is "BattIePatch: Ghoul Mood Bar Shows Their Hunger" it does as it says turns their mood bar on their portrait at the top of the screen that does nothing because ghouls don't have mood into their hunger bar so its easy to keep track of

There are some interesting usecases for a contained heart. I think you could create self-repairing walls for example. Just put a wall on the inside and stop its growth on the outside via somthing preferrably raiderproof. This should mean when raider attck it all the growth would be focused on the damaged spot which should make them quite durable. You could probably also kind of use it like sealingfoam and quickly seal a breached area. All of these are just speculations though.

If by handling you mean exploited the absolute shite out of it (which I love) then he did pretty well. Where others see insurmountable obstacles and game ending monstrosities, our Francis sees renewable resources per day.

So now strip out the underground pit, put atmospheric heaters down, turn to 500°C and create hell. Maybe throw some rings down .... ....or continue with waste, so it can spawn endless amounts of insects for meat -> chemfuel and jelly

You can't summon a flesh pit from inside a fleshpit. Also you can't summon shamblers, animals or fleshbeasts. But in theory you could be very safe down there so long as you don't release/attack the heart. Trying to go back to the surface would get harder and harder as more fleshbeast spawns happen on the map above.

The tough spikes will probably start breaking walls. They game seems to consider them animal type and those just smash through walls if the temp gets too high/ too low . PS: Unless you meant to juts make the freezer nearby . Which you probably can but it can be risky.

My strat was to wait for 3 nerve bundles, mortar them, use drop pods to send 2 pawns and 2 (later up to 8) ghouls, pave way to the samples, destroy the heart. Easy, simple, profitable :P

I like the idea of three strike teams analysing the samples at the same time so that that someone can drop pod to the heart and shut it down. Feels like a heist movie sort of solution.

I wander if you can prevent the acid spitter thingy from firing by building roofs over them? If so, I think, we could use this thing to make a self-healing outer walls. I'm thinking build normal walls on the inside to prevent fleshbeasts from spawning and graves on the outside. If breachers or sappers or aggressive shamblers show up, they will trigger a defense response from the fleshmass and get destroyed. Another question I wander if whether insects and fleshbeasts are hostile to eachother. Could you maybe use the fleshmash to wall in an infestation? If you drop trash on top of the hives and you surround the fleshmash with walls then maybe it's possible to force the hives to drop their jelly outside. Will insects try to mine the fleshmass? Will fleshbeasts attack insect hives?

I can report that two atmospheric heaters is sufficient to keep my temperate forest map at a stable 70°F. your mileage may vary for other biomes

Graves also don't require any materials to create which means they are easier to build in the field. I just realized that you could create an outer defensive wall using the Heart contained with Graves. Enemies don't attack the Flesh wall so presumably you could have a perfect defense.

My first encounter with flesh mass was before the colony had ghouls or flamethrowers. I had dogs as melee blockers instead. Didn't work out well for the dogs

I've been doing some playing around with metalhorror in dev mode. You absolutely can infect prisoners and guests. Infecting prisoners is relatively easy. They have something like 1/2 or 1/3 chance to get infected everytime a metalhorror host feeds them or harvests their blood. So really, you can just disable wardening and doctoring for the rest of the colony and set all prisoners to get hemogen farmed. Wounded guests whom you rescued can also be infected without diplomatic consequence if your infected colonist inspects them or feeds them. If you don't have any metalhorror epidemic going on, it's possible to put a wounded guest in a cryosleep casket for later use. As for prisoners, this combines well with a Yunner + bloodbag build. If you recruit a prisoner and give them the deathless gene (but not hemogenic), you can max out their mood and harvest their organs to put them in a permanant coma. Their hunger rate will get lower but 100% malnutrition won't kill them. Since they are members of your own faction, the harmonizer will still work if you arrest them (contrarily to slaves). Furthermore, since they won't be hemogenic, this means you can use them as blood bags. It's better if you bring their metabolic efficiency as low as possible. Their malnutrition + high hunger rate from low metabolic efficiency means that if you start feeding them again, they will eat a lot, leading to more opportunities for your metalhorror host to infect them. In any case, in my experience, metalhorrors emerging never directly kills the hosts. Usually, it's the bleeding or some additional finish shot that kills them. Since deadcalm prevents bleeding to death and death from damage to the torso, this is very unlikely to kill them. But actually the funniest result I got was to infect sieging raiders. I used skip to steal their components before they could build a mortar, I had my infected pawn cook a fuckton of fine meals and I droppoded those meals to them. Sieging raiders will eat fine meals over packaged survival meals if it's compatible with their ideology. The rate of infections seams a much lower though. 70 raiders, about 150 fine meals and 7 of them only got infected only. A few of them also got food poisoning because my kitchen was super filthy at the time. In any case, this seams profitable. Infected raiders don't immediately die why their metalhorror emerge leading to a higher than number of potential captures and of course the emerging metal horrors can do quite a number on the rest. More importantly, in all cases metalhorrors have 1/2 chance to drop shards. Voluntarily spreading the infection to pawns you don't mind dying is by far the most effective way to farm shards I have found so far. Edit: Turns out this is sustainable too!!! Contaminated meals remain contaminated so you can start a new epidemic by telling one of your pawns to eat a few! You can scale the shit out of this!

No clue if you found since I'm just at the beginning but, if you click on the pit and on "enter pit" it should give you the caravan screen where you can form groups to enter the pit. Same in the pit. If you click on the rope and the button there, you can form groups and leave Edit: 5 seconds later and you showed the screen. nice timing

The questions are: 1. will raiders attack flesh walls to get to your base? 2. would enemy raids (or friendly caravans) spawn if all outer perimeter consumed by flesh (or only droppods would be an option for the storyteller)?

Another one, if a flesh heart was left alive outside the walls but contained within a large fence area. Would basic mortar attacks on the walls spawn enough flesh beasts to annoy raiders? Actually maybe FJ can think of a way to provoke a flesh mass response without spending resources like mortars. If so then the flesh mass heart becomes a source of free endless canon fodder for raids. Or a great distraction.

I've taken enough limbs out of humans to know that I prefer them because it's easier to do. In the game, of course. How else do we keep our blood bags, gene donate volunteers and medical training dummies from revolting.

Yeah, I still remember the de-limbing machine in Kenshi. That is really uncomfortable to watch, they do a lot of screaming and begging. Doing it to monsters gives you enough distance to not feel bad about it.
