The Devourers were the worst thing I have seen so far. The only defence plan I can think of so far involves manhunter pulse and that is a level 6 psy cast. That is not a good strategy as it requires a lot of things to go right for you to end up with that psy cast. Going to have to do a bunch of experimenting with kill methods to figure out what will work outside of that. The unnatural darkness seems a little easier to handle. The hard part is when you kill the pillars how you survive the swarm.

About the Revenant Flesh Chunk: The way the encounter is meant to be played (before you have a nigh-endless amount of flares, psi-casts, and firepower), is that you need to damage the revenant during the brief times it is visible when it attacks, and then hunt it between the attacks. After each attack, the revenant drops a chunk of flesh, which makes hunting it easier. The first chunk gives you more footprints to work with. The second chunk gives you an alert to colonists near the revenant (similar to the invisibility detector alert). The third and final chunk makes the revenant visible when really close to a colonist. So you use those hints to find the revenant when it is resting between attacks, and slowly drop his large HP pool, before it hypnotizes your entire colony. Or you you just stun it and fill it with bullet holes, like Francis does here.

Sounds like Revenants were meant to be an early-to-midgame challenge, but their placement as a 2nd-tier entity, instead of as a 1st-tier entity, screwed over their potential to be said early-to-midgame challenges.

Yeah imma be honest - at this stage I have a late-game colony with ~12 pawns, many with some bionics, all in marine or recon armour with excellent/mastercraft rifles, but I would still consider a revenant to be a dangerous enemy, and if I get attacked by a horde of them I don't think my killbox can take it - I'll definitely loose a few pawns. And really, how many of us play at Francis's level (maybe many and I'm just a bad player?)? And seeing Francis struggle with the devourers - I do not want to run into those guys!

Ah, the devourer. My first experience with these creatures was when one of my colonists was caught outside by a group of them and then got eaten, followed by an intense and stressful battle of killing the rest while baiting their lunges with cleaner/hauler mechs and the ghoul. The eaten colonist eventually got spat out, missing both arms and with a shattered spine, close to dying. The devourers were defeated, and that colonist survived. But wow, what a frantic fight for survival that was. She's got one hell of a story regarding her bionic spine+limbs replacement.

yup, they got me my second wipe since the update. First: decided to figth the "orb that spawns a walls of flesh" thing on open ground with some 7 colonist and 1 ghoul. didn't give them one inch of soil, died honorably. Second wipe: devourer's came, 'yeah wathever'd' my trap corridor, ate/killed everyone, trashed the placed, and decided to move in. bastards.

Btw, I don't know if you've been ignoring some of those quests where they offer rewards in exchange for being able to dump a dangerous item on you (the way you got your first revenant spine) but you should keep accepting those. That's an alternative way to get one of the one's you've been missing. Plus, if you get more revenants or more strange corpses, that isn't bad.

So, in referencing my "oh god!" comment about the sphere last time, sent it against a raid of eighty tribels and it obliterated the entire raid in thirty seconds. Just evaporated them. The first response was when the first hit took out a chunk. The second oh god was when it just cleared the enemies. Then the oh no... was when it started to teleport hop back towards my base and people. It got one jump away before shutting down.

Honestly, this just reminds me how broken the centipedes are. Doesn't matter what gets released or introduced into the game, it will never be able to hold a candle to the threat level of a large bunch of centipedes. It really makes them not enjoyable to fight.

Pokeball's strongest attack is the Agony Pulse which the mechanoids are immune to and its second strongest attack is the Heatspike which the mechnoids partially resist. It really should only be used against things that can feel pain and which can be set on fire.

Fire, Stun, or Vertigo Pulse makes Devourers kittens. Do NOT try to kite them. I always put my mechanoids in front too so they have something to chew on for a second.

Xiaoer could swear he felt like a piece of metal was talking to him, but before he could say anything - he was quickly put to sleep as VictorB was connecting blood pipes to him. Nobody was paying attention, as prisoners were used to their daily blood extraction... or so was VictorB thinking. In fact, Blake was immobilized by terror, gazing how thousands upon thousands of enlacing metallic strings come out of VictorB's hands while he's giggling akin the drill perforating the steel... He knew who that piece of gray flesh belongs to. He knew nobody would believe him. But he still was praying to all the gods he knew that the colony would find the source. One of the two void entities is locked behind a "mysterious cargo" quest, like the bodies that keep appering near colonists. The other one is unlocked provoking the void. The latter is nice, but the mysterious cargo one can be very entertaining

A few helpful tips: You can use the Water Skip Psycast to detect invisible revenants. (Finally more of a use for this often forgotten Psycast!) You can set Devourers on fire, and they will instantly spit out any swallowed colonists. (You underestimate the usefulness of fire in this DLC. Try out the Incinerator, can be used to safely fire over your colonists shoulders. Lots of things in this DLC are extra vulnerable to fire.) Devourers can not swallow 'large' creatures/mechs, so they may be more useful as melee blockers than your regular pawns. (Your Diablous being a good example.)

I've done quite a bit of testing with metalhorrors. In dev mode, you can show hidden hediffs to easily see how the infection spreads. Any surgery from an infected surgeon, including hemogen harvesting, has about 1/2 or 1/3 chance to infect a patient. Tending doesn't seam to spread it from what I've seen. However, a doctor directly feeding a meal to a patient also has about 1/2 or 1/3 chance to infect them. Meals that have been cooked by an infected pawn can also spread it, but it's much rarer, something like 5% per meal. However, the meals remain infected even after the original outbreak emerges. Butchering does not spread the infection. Hemogenic pawns won't get it from consuming hemogen harvested by an infected pawn. In any case, from what I have seen, any human (including ghouls) can get it, but not animals or non-ghoul entities. It can infect colonists, prisoners, quest pawns, guests(e.g. downed guests that you rescued) and even raiders (such as siege raiders from eating infected meals). With all of this being said, here's the build I have come up with for sustainable shard productions from metalhorror. Essentially, I have a single cololist, ideally a sangophage or similar, who is in charge of spreading and maintaining an infection. Let's call that colonist "Patient zero" . Zones should in a way that prevents Patient Zero from doctoring other colonists. However, only Patient Zero should be feeding and harvesting the blood from prisoners (can be done with zones). Prisoners should be turned to nuggets so that meals be feed directly to them and not just dropped on the ground. Patient zero is also in charge of cooking meals to self-contaminate. Ideally, it should be a specific type of meal than nobody else in the colony can eat. For my tests, I used carnivore fine meals. Make sure only Patient Zero is allowed to eat it. Also make sure you have lavish meals in your freezer so that if one of your colonists go on a food binge, they have something else to eat. In any case, Patient Zero should only cook when you know they are infected. Disable the cooking bill whenever metalhorrors emerge and reenable it whenever gray flesh shows up. And that's pretty much it. You get a pawn that repeatedly infects prisoners with metalhorrors in a completely sustainable way. In my current game, I'm at my 7th metalhorror harvest. And I have all the shards I can dream of.

I have a noctule who lives in the attic of my house. There is a Chilean comedian who told a joke at the most iconic event in the country and let's say that it did not go very well back then but now the noctule joke is taking over social networks. It made me laugh a lot to see that they included the noctules in rimworld.

You should always illuminate the inside of your walls regardless of Anomaly. As the saying goes, in darkness every pawn is a Depressive(-5 mood) Lazy(80% global work speed) with a Peg Leg(80% movement speed)

Cranking up the difficulty and uncapping it is all well and good, but some tactics are just so good they can handle anything. The restrictions make you get creative.

The Nico sphere is actually a lot more effective against anything living with that black lightning effect. And the devourers are in my opinion the most deadly thing up to the “mid tier entities” especially if you get them very early and you don’t have much fire power yet. Killed of 2 of my colonies without problems on their end. They do most damage if the finish the 20 or 30 sec of digestion btw

Seems like the Anomaly DLC has made the Fire Breath gene found within Impids, along with their flame bows, that little bit more useful? Actually, perhaps the devs might've missed out on an opportunity to add a psycast that remotely sets pawns, objects, or terrain on fire (perhaps called, say, Ignite, Pyreskip, or Pyrokinesis to name a few) for if players have the Royalty DLC in addition to the Anomaly DLC (like when players who had both the Ideology and Biotech DLC were given access to the Bloodfeeders Meme, plus some precepts related towards raising children, xenotype favoritism, and attitude towards pawns with the Hemogenic and/or Bloodfeeder genes)?

@ShadowWolfTJC Actually no, in an odd twist the hellcat makes it so the things in that area take fire damage and starts minimal fire. Fire spew sets things (including ground) on fire. So if you have a narrow path, hell cat will damage all in that path, while with fire spew it will damage and block that path. This results in the hellcat being better as your base doesnt burn down + 3 charges. heat tolerance + low flammibility on the other hand go amazingly as hellcats can still raise the temperature of a room quickly and with low flammibility burning your pawns is not likely.

With regards to solar flares during unnatural darkness - it can't actually turn off your power while the entity is in effect.

Really? Solar flares would not turn off any electric lights, even during the unnatural darkness entity event? Sounds like there were complaints about that happening during playtesting, even though I could see more experienced players eventually installing non-electric-powered lights, such as torches or lanterns that could be powered by, say, wood, chemfuel, or even bioferrite, as a backup plan.

Also , regarding devoureres, they can’t swallow pawns with a body size larger or equal to 3 I think , so you can use a tunneler to body block relatively safely , same goes for centipedes

Hey Francis, since it won't matter for this playthrough, here is a neat fact about devourers. they can water ascend. oceanside colony? 200 devourers popping out the ocean, worse then cthlulu. riverside colony with bridges and walls over them? the fuckers will swim right under your bridges and walls and ascend right in the middle of your walled colony. same with mechanoids. its just really funny to me that the fat blobs of teeth that devourers are fit below a standard rimworld bridge. since anomaly you have to fully wall in rivers and build a devourer killbox there if you want to use watermills for easy power.

I think the best way to defeat the devourers is to block your killbox's maze/tunnel output with ghouls and your pawns directly standing behind them. You used the same tactic to kill the cougars but you may need to remove some plasteel barricades so your ghouls can stand directly in front of the killbox's output. Might take a while to kill all but better than getting swallowed by them.

I deal with devourers by having 2 lines of mechs, ghouls and dogs in front of my killbox so they're blocking these things from breaching my firing line. They get swallowed but it's really no big deal as with enough shooters they get shredded up pretty quick

I just sent my ghoul by himself in the darkness, the amount of regen and damage resist means that he can survive getting hit in the dark for a long time, and the noctils actually spawn gradually as you damage the monolith so he could kill them as they spawned.

Being able to just use manhunter pulse to make anomalies turn on each other feels too powerful and rather anticlimactic. I mean, sure, it spared you the chaos of risking your pawns if the incoming devourers ran out of ghouls to jump on, but it feels like it takes some of the danger and excitement out of defenses when a single pawn can just cause them to infight until there's not much left alive. The unnatural darkness scenario is a pretty fun one, and potentially devastating if you're not prepared properly for it.

I don't think rimworld can challenge FJ without mods anymore. Sure, outlawing psycasts would help, but the list of OP tools FJ has mastered at one point or another has gotten quite long. Mod recommendations for difficulty: CAI - 5000 killbox killer Just try it, even if only on a test map. Raids are exponentially more difficult when the raiders (and mechanoids!) start flanking you *through* walls. It should be mostly compatible with Anomaly by now, though I hear it makes certain entities behave a bit oddly. Save Our Ship 2 The vacuum of space doesn't play nice with CAI, but in exchange, you a difficulty spike in the form of ship to ship combat. Technically in beta, but it's mostly stable now. Zombieland Imagine having 100 manhunters arriving every single night. Then a normal raid shows up and blows a hole in your walls. Now imagine that some of those 'manhunters' are the special zombies from Left 4 Dead 2. Scenario Ammender Let's you edit a scenario mid playthrough, letting you add permanent and recurring game conditions like solar flares, darkness, fallout, etc. Incident Disabler Let's you disable incidents, such as the harmless negative incidents (one animal goes manhunter) and the positive incidents (resource drops, free recruits). Genetic Drift No more perfect children. The genes will never perfectly match the parents, resulting in unexpected and occasionally tragic consequences. Playthrough recommendations for difficulty: No psycasts. Alternatively, a hard limit that only sensitive sanguophages can be psycasters. Bonus points if only royals can be psycasters - no renouncing titles or other shennanigans. No Ghouls Alternatively, a limit to the number of ghouls. Fallout Vault Start with tunneler meme and a pit gate with no enemies aside from the walled off miniboss. Set storyteller to fixed wealth at max difficulty. Hide underground while the surface becomes New Australia, sneak to the surface to summon more pit gates and caravan for resources. Fallout Fallout: Game conditions of Permanent Nuclear Winter, Permanent Toxic Fallout, Solar Flares once a quadrum, and optionally recurring or permanent Darkness, start on a 100% polluted tile. Cube Cult: Embrace the Cube, even during the finale's. No Human Factions No human factions. No trading with humans, no recruiting human raiders. Bonus points if all incidents granting free recruits are disabled. Your starting colonists are all you'll ever get. If you start with only two colonists... good luck. Note that cultists can only be disabled in incidents, as they are a hidden faction. Note that the kidnap ritual does nothing if there are no valid human factions. No Trading No trading via caravan or trade ships. If you want something rare, you'll have to get lucky and/or quest for it. No getting assault rifles before researching SMGs, no plentiful shock lances.

you can create a challenge so much easier for FJ cas instead of easy mode (aka randy) would already make such a huge difference. no raid cap from the get go and there you have it everything else is optional like being permanent at war with the empire instead of chickening out after picking up the deserter side quest goodies ppl forget that randy can only hit you every 1.3 days and even then only when he rolls on an attack (with the 10th roll being forced to be 'an attack' if there were none in the 9 rolls before) => with all the possible rolls added by the different DLCs Randy is easier than phoebe nowadays. Take this episode as example: the cougar's were his void provocation and the mechs the raid. Plus he got a raid point reduction to barely reach the raid limit due to the recently downed colonist

Kiting or just splitting the devourers up works well. If you just leave the killbox closed they will all spread out hitting random walls then you pop out and kill 1 or 2 then run back in.

As far as I'm aware you can't contract metal horror from bloodpacks. It only works with food or operations as far as I can tell.

That blood farm idea seems very inefficient, yes it works, but will it not give more time for an infection to spread throughout the colony? I was just thinking that if the first person who draws blood is actually infected, does the infection then spread from the prisoner to every pawn who draws blood after them? If so, the results could be horrifying.

Don't get me wrong, I like the pause play style too, especially if you could play back a whole battle or something without the pauses, would look super cool and totally well organized. But I think you need the challenge now, there's not nearly enough death or tension on your part. I think we all want to see you get flustered!

Without spoiling what exactly it does, personally, I think that that not-yet-discovered weather entity should've been made into a Tier 1 entity that could only start appearing around the midgame, much like Toxic Fallout. It seems THAT underwhelming to me IMO.

With the invisible revenants, the manhunter pulse had the animation show on them. Didn't turn them manhunter, but the pulse has such a large radius, you could use it to hunt them down?

Francis I have a question , since last time a metal horror popped out of a prisoner when they tried to leave the map. I wonder if you can arrest your own colonists and caravan them off the map as prisoners to check for metal horror ?

That would require more testing. I have discovered that you can send an infected pawn off the map with transport pods and it does not activate the metal horror. Not sure about walking them off just yet.

A note on the Unnatural Darkness : Anything that isn't under your direct pawn-like control is immune to it. That includes your mechanoids, raiders, trade caravans, flesh beasts... basically anything that isn't one of your pawns/ghoul is immune to it and won't get hurt. Which is quite a bit anti-climactic in my opinion. Also, if you get a solar flare during the unnatural darkness, it will not work, meaning that your lamps and electric furnitures will stay on despite the solar flare.

Really? Solar flares would not turn off any electric lights, even during the unnatural darkness entity event? Sounds like there were complaints about that happening during playtesting, even though I could see more experienced players eventually installing non-electric-powered lights, such as torches or lanterns that could be powered by, say, wood, chemfuel, or even bioferrite, as a backup plan.

@@Jfk2Mr No, I had several solar flares during an unnatural darkness, they just didn't do anything at all. Not sure if raids get deactivated, but Wild Animals, Friendly & Gostile Mechanoids, and Traders do not get hurt by the darkness at all.
