- This Barrel Organ with Automata was has 25 programming tracks, 22 tracks for music and 3 tracks for the moving automata figures. One of the figurines even performs a magic trick. This organ was used like a Street Organ but carrried by the organgrinder on the belly and is therefore also called a Belly Organ. Enjoy!

"And it still sounds exactly the same as it did back then." Holy cow that's some good craftsmanship.
@theorganguy
@theorganguy 6 лет назад
her statement isn't precisely true... the song is exactly the same, so are the movements... the sound? not so much... as pipes age the tonality changes; originally these pipes would have sounded probably a bit harsher, they mellowed since. This is also why old pipe organs such as these are additionally tremendously valuable, as one can not simply built pipes to sound "aged", they have to age naturally. Additionally - what the craftsmanship is concerned - these organ builders were indeed amazing; however, for the organ to play as it does now, the folks behind the scenes at the museum, who do all the maintenance are the true heroes... they make sure these instruments keep playing as intended.

Hello, my name is Jacob Niemuth and my family back in the 1700's used to build organ grinders and invented the trumpet 16 organ grinder. They do bare my family name and I was wondering if any of them are in this museum?

Oh yes, i have heard its been requested alot, its a scrap song i found and i really dont think the fullength version is OK as it is right now, but we are thinking of maybe releasing the whole background music soundtrack on bandcamp when this series is over and then i will brush the fullength version up and make a proper song out of it! Im building a new music studio in october so that can be a nice first project in the new studio perhaps!

It really must've been a treat to see this instrument played live on the street 200 years ago when there was no RU-vid, no smartphones and even no gramophones. You were walking down the street and suddenly heard music playing, some figurines moving on their own, and all this enclosed in relatively small music box. It's truly a masterpiece. Thank you Wintergatan for showing this to us.

WOW! This video series and this video in general is so inspiring! This makes me want to go out and build something like this, maybe not an organ, as they require delicate and precise tuning, but maybe something smaller like a harmonica or maybe an ocrarina. Thanks so much for making these videos! If I ever go to the Netherlands I am definatly going to the Speelklok Museum. Hopefully I can meet you too, if not you HAVE to bring your world tour to Dallas. PLEASE!!!

These were used by street artists, just imagine how much one would cost, it would be almost like nowadays a street artist buying a Ferrari as an entertainment item to make a few bucks a day. Such artists never really make that much money to afford such thing, it makes sense some luthiers built these for a living and rented them for the folks using them to entertain pass-bys.

nowadays most of us grew up in a time in which it's normal that objects can make sounds. It's a pity that mechanical things like barrel organs lose their magic thereby... when I was young and saw a barrel organ in the streets, it was nice but no highlight anymore, and I never asked myself how it works. Some things can only be appreciated when you're older and feel the magic again ;) yes, this time it's the other way round...
