200 Year Old Building Foundation Finally Revealed: Our Homestead Ireland

Join us today as we continue to excavate, by hand, the foundations of the 200 year old stone building on our homestead in Ireland. Without digging to deeply, to prevent undermining the bottom stones, Ben takes his time before finally being able to reveal the bottom row of stone of this 200 year old building before removing more dirt and stones to gain access to the second outbuildings door. We have only ever seen the ground raised at the door, so this is exciting for us.
The quality of soil is incredible where it has been worked for over 200 years, however, the lower area of the ground isn't so lucky. The very shallow bedrock prevents water from draining leaving a muddy mess. Land drainage will be required for this area and many areas on the homestead.
Being complete beginners on a homestead, we are taking it slowly, enjoying everything we do no matter how hard it is to one day, realise our dream of running a fully functioning homestead.

It is close, well nearly close, to being finished. At the moment we have learned where the bedrock is, where the wet spots are and how much drainage we need you to come over and dig for us hahaha. We spent so many days deciding when we would need digger Rob we have done it all lol. Hope you are both keeping well and we will see you soon xxx

I couldn’t even begin to guess about the battery things since I’m over here in America and everything is different here. Those ivy roots are so invasive, but you’ve done AMAZING at finding the cornerstones! I absolutely love the music, birds chirping, and all the greenery and ancient stones. The old soil looks so rich and healthy, I live in the desert and even the dirt here is dry and dead, and I can almost smell the fresh dark soil through my phone screen. And little over time, you’ll sort out all the drainage on your land. Have a lovely day, and it’s always a pleasure to see you guys!😊❤

Aww thank you and it’s always lovely to see you comment too. Hope you are doing ok, considering what’s going on in your life? Sooo chuffed to get down to ground level! It means that part is dug as much as we have to! lol wonderful to see the first beginning stone that would have been laid at the very least 200 years ago! Blows my mind to think about that! If I never see Ivy again it will be too soon! It’s such a right royal pain in the backside isn’t it?! It’s just everywhere! The soil is amazing, we lived in a new build before this and the soil and ground was awful, so awful that even the grass couldn’t really grow very well! We are looking forward to being able to sort the drainage, we realise it will always been a bit damper than the average garden but if we can decrease the amount that sits around it should help. ❤️

That would have been a good guess... Dawn said about them being compressed air canisters before thinking of batteries. Haha, Dawn calls the one up the top her welly washing place. Then we walk back through all of the mud and mess them up again. We make us tired watching us too hahahaha. We sleep well each night. This section is coming along nicely. Down to the cornerstones, and you can walk straight out the door! I Googled antique/vintage batteries, and it seems the units that go into the box are called battery cells; the box is called a battery case; and the entire unit is called a battery. 😁

It would be lovely but we do come across some unfortunately. It has a silver lining though because it’s definitely made us conscious of using and throwing away plastic! It just does not age. Living here and being mainly off grid from the beginning has made us think about a lot of things we use to be fair.

My father and uncle in the late 1950 to 1960 ran a fencing business in the station country out from Broken Hill, we boys always went out bush with them during school holidays and I well remember huddling around my uncles Phillips portable valve radio after sunset listening to the crackly old radio series that were the mainstay. These took two battery packs . I looked on google and one was an A and the other B which was much larger. Those were the days for young boys. 😊❤

Aww what a lovely memory that is! Funny how little things like us stood there wondering what these weird things were can trigger such lovely memories! So far we’ve only come across one partially intact battery pack, but there have been soo many of those little ones that I think the other pack has probably disintegrated now. I love a good trip down memory land of childhood memories and I’m glad we triggered that one you ❤️

I think we need a bit more elbow grease as one the thing we have found always aches since doing the joists in the kitchen are our elbows. The patience I have, Dawn wants it all done at once. It’s quite fascinating to be honest, trying to figure it all out, finding the bedrock has made us think that gravel and soil were put down to level the land when the bedrock was concave in places and then the years that the house has been empty and the garden left to its own devices has probably raised the land level quite a lot. I’m sure we could sort something out like for you! Ben was planning on sticking the drone up today but didn’t get around to it in the end, but we will get that sorted for you.

We’ve done a lot of reading on stone buildings…it’s important to learn I think…especially if you plan on trying to repair them lol. Watched lots of RU-vid videos too. We do try not to be lazy but the thought of scraping all the land back and starting again…too much thinking and planning involved 🤣 🍀❤️

I reckon that lovely soil is probably the end result of forty year old manure piles....As the cottage is old, I'd guess somewhere there is a pit filled with all the household rubbish from way back when.

I’m really enjoying catching up with your new home and what great progress you have made already. I have to admit that when I see the view from the land to the house now the roof of the outbuilding is down it looks so beautiful that I would be tempted to take down the out buildings and use the stone for a lovely courtyard in its place - just a thought

Hi, thank you for watching and commenting and for catching up. The view up from the land is lovely and once the house is re-rendered and maybe whitewashed it will look amazing. BUT..... the out buildings are older than the house, one still having the original flagstones on the ground and the entrance stone where the door was all worn down with the hundreds of years of footfall. A courtyard really would look nice, especially with the old stones but we couldn't sacrifice the buildings to make it. Hopefully this year will see it repaired and a new roof on it. We were gutted when the roof collapsed. Thanks again for watching :-)

Covering the top course of the stone walls you are excavating with a waterproof membrane (plastic sheet, felt paper, pond liner, etc.) and weighing it down with stones will stop the rain water damage. It is likely the mortar between the stones was mud, So the sooner you can stop water soaking through the entire wall - the better. Just for preservation purposes. 😊

Thanks Steve. Hopefully it won't be too long before we can start to repair the outbuilding and get a roof back on it. The section of wall that has fallen in is due to the tree we spoke of and the other dodgy place is where the doorway was widened in the past. There is a lot of work to be done on it. We did think about tarping the lot but with the walls being like they are in places, the wind may do more damage than good. The days are getting warmer ad lighter, so hopefully, not to much longer to wait. Thanks for watching and commenting :-)

They are Dry Cell Batteries, because you don't add water or acid. A great improvement in convenience over the old Glass Batteries.

May I suggest a round shovel with a long handle or two and a wheelbarrow? I believe you will be able to move more earth with less physical exertion. Do you have a place to dump the diggings? The soil is likely very nutrient dense. I would suggest dumping it anywhere you want to raise the grade and anyplace where you want to plant. My hunch is at one time, that was the manure pile. 👍

We do have a round shovel with a long handle but stupidly forgot to get it out the shed. We will use it when we investigate a little more whether there is a stone filled base under that raised up area. We have a smallish area where we could dump some but not a huge amount. This is our trouble really there’s not too many places that we could put it. We could put some around the blackcurrants and the raspberries. We’ve had a few people say that may have been the manure pile and the more we think about it….we think you’re all right! It would make sense with how lovely the soil is too! 😊

@@thecornerhouseproject That's what happens as farmers age. The manure pile gets closer and closer to the animal shed. Eventually, they just throw it out the door - and they can't throw very far. 😊 My arms were aching just watching you swing the mattock. That tool gets mighty heavy after a while. Since you are in Ireland and your soil does not drain quickly, have you given some thought to raised garden beds for veggies? You have the space if that is something that interests you 👍

Good evening Ed. Our previous house was like that. It was a new build and I think the put clay down for top soil and then tried to grow grass on it. The soil here really looks amazing. We don't know how well it will grow veg but blackcurrents, ivy and brambles love it haha. Have a nice rest of the day :-)

Yeah can’t let the rain stop you otherwise you’d not get anything done here lol it rains a lot 😂. But to be fair the previous couple of weeks have been quite dry and we’ve been quite lucky since we started the land to not have too many wet days 🥳 Fingers crossed by the end of tomorrow we should finished it….sort of 😂 it’s going to be an ongoing thing…

I'm 99% sure they're fuses, bottle fuses (officially called Diazed). Ireland never really used UK-style rewirable fuses as far as I know. These fuses are ceramic "bottles" with a metal terminal either end, filled with sand and the fuse wire goes from terminal to terminal. If they blow, you replace them (or bodge them up with wire, tinfoil, nails or anything conductive and suitable to burn your house down because it will let much more current through than the original fuse wire). The end with the flat cap has a tiny coloured metal disc attached to the wire. If the fuse blows, the disc is supposed to come off to let you know which fuse to replace (present tense because you can still buy those fuses at every DIY store). Have a look at the old fuses above your back door, if you unscrew the caps you should find fuses just like these, probably one size larger though. Diazed fuses came in five physical sizes and each size came in a range of amps. The ones in your garden look like DI (1-16 amps I think) while the ones in the kitchen are DII (1-25 amps). DIII (35-63 amps) and up were rare in domestic properties, except as main fuses. The tips look much too beefy for battery cells to me. Try to clean up some of them and see if you can find any markings. On the other hand the fabric covering does sound like battery cells, I have to admit I'm confused!

Hi Ragnar, thanks for such an in depth comment. We have the Diazed fuses, I found them on Google when we first moved here called bottle fuses as you say, in the old fuse board we took from the kitchen and although they look like them, these really are batteries. Today we found a typical ever ready battery with half decayed and it looked pretty much like the early ones I had in my hand. Sadly I didn't really show it on camera but the case (battery) I found still had the single cells in it. I will try and get a decent image of one tomorrow and do a google image search to see what it comes up with. With you saying about tin foil and nails as a bodge. I read using a nail took a 15amp or whatever size had blown up to about 1000amps or some "house a blaze" amount anyway. Tin foil was my quick test go to, just to confirm it was the fuse before I had a multi-meter. Thanks again for a great comment :-)

Hi Stephen We are certainly stronger than when we came, still exhausting though, maybe you to tell as I was trying to speak lol. That is one really nice thing about doing it manually. We benefit from it in the end and we learn along the way. It helps us make plans or change plans as we go. I suppose you could say we make it up as we go along hahaha. Another awesome accomplishment! You have really done an amazing job of getting to a level area at the back door of the outbuildings.. It is coming on beautifully... Ooh it’s so lovely to be able to walk straight through into the building…we’d had to get into a habit of ducking when we went in from that way because when you hit your on a stone lintel…it hurts a little! Haha…so it’s great to just walk in through now. Looking forward to there being a complete path once we’ve pulled all that soil back. Finds and conundrums are what keep us stubbornly sticking to the no machinery at the moment, because we would miss all the curious things we come across! I’m not sure there will be much getting out there today as it’s forecast for a lot of rain all day, good on one hand for our water supply…bad on the other….its soooo muddy everywhere! 😂 See you Friday 😘

Hi Ellen, I am really pleased with that little path through the building. Wood chips are now down to hide the puddle and seems to be doing the trick. It really did rain and for quite some time. When I first started watching I thought that dreaded rain again ugh, then I remembered that I lived in Ireland for 2 years I remember all the rain and my husband has a weather app on his watch and it's Belfast weather because he's from there and then Oklahoma weather and he said to me today they've got five more days of rain in Belfast he goes I'm not missing that. But he hates our summers. Went to thrift stores with my sister again today and she actually stayed up on her own two feet lol well I hold on to her and I won't let her go lol I can't believe how much you two have accomplished. You're going to have to save your drone at the beginning when it was all brushed over to when you're in the middle of the clearing where you are now and then the very end when it's starting to get established. Yeah we have the same sort of forecast here too, we’re not too far from Belfast as the crow flies! 😂 Today is forecast for quite a bit of rain but if my weather app is to believed, tomorrow should be a lovely day! We shall see! Does it get very hot in Oklahoma for the summer? Funnily enough I said to Ben the other day, I am so glad we are doing this sort of work now and not in the summer….i run a bit hot at the best of times but when working I feel like I might explode! So I’m quite thankful for the chill and rain here at the moment! Ooh I’d love to go the thrift stores you have over there…Lukas went to some in Canada and wow they are so much different to what we are used to! Did you get anything nice? So glad to hear your sister stayed upright! How is her arm doing now? It’s going to be great to see the difference with the drone shots….ben bought the drone out with us yesterday but we completely forgot to send it up…fingers crossed the rain holds off at some point today we can get it up for a look! We’re looking forward to getting that mound of soil gone and down to floor level to see what there is there….i feel like there could be something step like down there🤞 Cherry dump cake! @@thecornerhouseproject our summers are super hot here we can get up to 110 heating index, that's what it feels like but it's usually a 101 or something. In the spring we have tornadoes but the past few years we haven't had that many I've lived in Oklahoma all my life since 1961 and I've never been in one although in 1999 we had a F5 which almost destroyed our business. And my ex-husband was on CNN News lol I should have asked them to take him with them when they left back then 😂 I got three Christmas items for next year and four different outfits. Really expensive lightweight summer sweaters, but I'll wear them in the spring and fall because it's already summer like here I think it's supposed to be 83 today although it doesn't feel like it. Oh I'm hot all the time but that's menopause I get so hot sometimes I want to kill dead things lol I cannot believe all that you two have accomplished it looks fabulous. And this is only the beginning.

Hi love watching your discoveries, The wild primroses in your previous video reminded me of my childhood spent in the country and the bird song looking to build their nests. Wondered if you have a spring well near the property as most old farm buildings were not connected to any water supply and relied on the spring well for fresh spring water. Also there was probably no electricity for many years. I may have missed the video where you discovered old traditions from old Ireland. O could the object you found be a spark plug pack for a milking machine? Take care x

Hopefully we can get some primroses growing in our newly cleaned wall as they don't seem to mind where they grow. It was really nice to see them for the first time since being here just growing out of the mud covered wall along the lane. The birds are going nuts at the moment looking for nesting spots. The Robin is funny as he waits for us to go before he sneaks into his new home for the year. There is a well along the road sadly now is contaminated with water coming from off the road. It is 110m away from the house and was indeed the main fresh water for the area. There are two wells and they may have been a third but it is unclean on the old maps. We think electric was connected here in the 50's going by the round three pin plugs found in older houses. In the 60's these were changed to the current UK standard rectangle 3 pin plugs. There were only two plugs in the kitchen. The other rooms in the house only had light switches. What amazes me is that the last place in Ireland to have electricity was not until 1979 and it was an entire town or village. Spoiler alert lol. They were batteries, as you will have found out but they look very much like the old bottle fuses the house originally had, so it is a good guess. I would have never guessed a battery, they almost looked like weights. You two have the patience of Job, moving all that earth. I’m sure my husband and I would have at least two arguments on getting a digger in to level it all, but then you would miss all the treasures, even if they are old batteries. The Maryland chapter of Blossom watch would like to report a couple of blossoms have been observed on bushes, but still the trees are holding off. I guessing about a week and we may be reporting tree blossoms. See ya Friday.

This is it, I like the treasure aspect and I’d hate the thought I was missing out on something special! 😂 now and again I’ve stood and looked around it all and thought “we should get a digger!” Because it had been hard going at times! But we’re nearly there now so we just keep ploughing through it. Ooh lovely with the Maryland blossom 🌸 we now have some leaves sprouting on the apple trees and lots of little leaves popping out and ooh some little fluffy catkins on the willows. It’s lovely to see them all coming back to life isn’t it? ❤️

The merlin bird app,is quite addictive, downloaded it a few weeks ago when you first mentioned it, its surprising how many different species we get in our little urban garden in Hull.Keep going your garden looks so good😊

Hi Rita We love the Merlin app. That video was from 45 minutes of it being sat on the wall. It is lovely to be able to find out what bird is making what sound. Do you have a probing rod to stick down through the top soil to the bedrock? You can poke down around the outside walls to see how deep the footings are. The walls should also be wider at the bottom of the wall than they are at the top of the wall to hold the weight and lean to the inside just slightly so there is the counter pressure from the beams and joists for the roof, You might think the walls are slighting leaning in, but that doesn't mean it is unstable it is built that way. If it is big lean there may have been a bracing system inside at one time. You will see metal pieces or wooden pieces and pockets in the stone walls where braces were attached or beams were inserted. Look up bracing for stone walls and you will recognise the remnants of the original braces - also you will need to do the same thing when rebuilding different parts/sections of the walls, that old wood you kept will come in handy for bracing. It's amazing what a person can forget over time and then remember later (even if the memories are all out of order lol). If I find the curing time for mortar I will email it to you but I think it's one week for each inch of mortar in wall thickness. Alternatively, 90 days cure time before you can put a roof on top of the walls (weather permitting). It is a long slow process but so worth it when your done. Stone work season is March through October. November to February it is too cold for mortar to cure. Hahaha email sent - it's a short one - really, it is. I promise.

Good morning Janie, how are you today? Raining here again today, but we now have 4000 litres of water which is great news, with more rain to come. Yes, we have a piece of rebar which we used to find the sewer pipe on the land and it has been so handy. I think a couple of videos past Dawn was probing when we had found the large steps. And then you see us shoving something in the ground in various places in the last couple of video. It has been a great tool for finding solid ground. The SPAB books Dawn has, well with that said, all of her books on the old buildings are brilliant for info. I think she started watching and ordering books before we had even been over to took at somewhere to buy, so about 18 months. I get excited when a pair of gloves arrive, at the same time Dawn will state "Oh that will be the xyz book I ordered" and sure enough, it is a lime book, house book, homesteading book, something or other to join her ever growing library of books haha. Yes sadly the time of year and the house taking priority meant the outbuilding couldn't be worked on with lime. As you know though, it is all here and waiting to be mixed. Dawn can't wait to start on that outbuilding.... who knows.... maybe it will become the workshop as originally intended (before the roof collapsed) Thanks for the email, we will reply as always :-) Thank you as always for such a great list of pointers, info and everything else above. :-)

@@thecornerhouseproject Yeah Water! How much would it cost for a 4000+ litre dry well to be cored out, that you fill with rain water? (creating a dry well by drilling down in the bedrock and removing a core). You could harvest the stone at the same time for building too. You have water, it just needs to drain to a containment well with a pump and aerator. So funds needed for the Stove and the Well?? An Aga seems expensive but when you consider the price of a furnace and a stove separately and the associated costs with running ducting or pipes from a furnace an Aga isn't that expensive. I just though I'd put that out there into the universe and to those who are donating. Dawn deserves an Aga!!

We did think about it, but we decided we’d rather do it ourselves in the end for various reasons. I do like a good look for old bits of farm machinery from the past, another reason is the land is soooo wet that it would just churn up all the grass area getting it done, so we’d have to wait until the warmer/drier weather arrived and we just wanted to get it done, a lot of the soil is covering mounds and mounds of stone and other bits and pieces and we just preferred the idea of tackling it bit by bit rather than having to sift through a load of scraped back soil and there’s nowhere that we want any leftover soil dumped because although we have an acre of land it’s mainly long and quite narrow in places and we already have 2 massive piles of Ivy and bramble cuttings taking up space. So yeah….lots of reasons why not. Maybe in the summer we might do something with a digger once we decide where drainage needs to be and if we should level some high spots here and there. We’re almost done with it now so to be fair it hasn’t taken that long.

More good progress no stopping Dawn. All batteries are made up of cells. Each cell is about a volt so to get a 12v battery u connect twelve in series in the battery pack. Any update on the d2 u sprayed on the wall a few weeks ago. Make a few raised beds for that soil. Reily sleepers or scaffold boards. Now is the time to plant veg. I don’t know how u keep going power too u boyh

Hi Macus, thanks for joining us again. Sadly we can't see how many of them made up the final size as it was all in pieces. We are guessing on a tractor battery / batteries. The D2.... we haven't really looked BUT, I sprayed some yesterday on the building I was digging around and that has already turned the stone from green to it's natural colour. Also the over spray has made a clean line leaving the next stone 50/50 clean and dirty. We think some of the soil will end up somewhere, but at the moment it is still on the floor. We have to keep going or it just goes on and on and on and on lol. Thanks again :-)

I have to say yous are some workers only I live a bit too far away I bring my mini digger and do a day's digging ... the metal thing you found is a finger for a mowing machine for cutting Hay... We had o old house and there was a path way around the outside made from stone about metre wide

That path was lovely to see appearing as the soil was shovelled away. I think a few stones may be missing so with all the stones that we have laying about I am sure we can sort some new ones. We’ve been resisting a mini digger because we wanted to do it ourselves …but wow it's been hard going the last couple of days! lol if we ever decide to rearrange things we will probably go for a digger then! lol

We didn’t want a digger because we wanted to be able to not destroy whatever it was beneath the soil. Also our land is very wet and soggy so a digger would have struggled on it

We’ve chosen to not have one as the land is too wet really for machinery to be on and also we need to remove the soil carefully and we’d still have to barrow the soil at some point from wherever the digger dumps it. So in the long run theres no point really.

So many reasons Lloyd. Where do you put the huge pile that gets scraped back? Or how do you deal with the aftermath of all the churned up land which would be the access to the area to be scrapped. We aren't in a rush to get it done, but taking our time enjoying what we are doing. We also have control of what goes where and can sift through as we rake and dig. Having a huge pile to go through and move doesn't fill us with joy. Thanks for commenting.

We can’t have one on the land it is far too waterlogged and also we have nowhere to pull all the soil back to and we’d then still have to dig and barrow it away. We may as well dig and barrow where we are. We also don’t want to pull up the stones of the old farmyard.
