Welcome to our channel! In this video, we take you along on a journey of revealing and removing the history from our homestead and farmhouse.
We are nearing the final stages of clearing the homestead at the top of the land. It has been hard work digging by hand, raking back the soil and moving large stone. In todays episode, the Homestead reveals a huge, hidden puddle of water from beneath one of the 200 year old farm buildings. The ditch is certainly the way to go with the endless flowing water. We begin to dig a pathway at the rear of the ancient stone outbuilding so we can access the stonework which is badly in need of repairs which will be repointing with lime mortar.
Moving into the house we begin to remove the Victorian, tiled, cast iron fire surround and discover an amazing hidden secret of the fireplace in readiness for the stainless steel flue liner to be fitted. We now have a dilemma on our hands.
Watch the entire video to get up to speed and discover everything we have in the last two days.
There is something for everyone on The Corner House Project channel, if you subscribed for the derelict house renovations or just for the homestead, we will bring the smiles, you sit back and relax and let us do the work.... well, Dawn will do the work.
Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more homesteading and house renovation and restoration adventures!

Love the shape of the fireplace, a burner would look incredible in there and you’ll know it’s safe from smoke leaks
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 3 месяца назад
Oh we have already been looking. Once we discovered the smoke upstairs we know a wood stove was the way forward. The leaking could be maybe be fixed, but what about 12 months time half way up the chimney, so we completely agree with you, a flue liner and stove is the way forwards. Thank you Sam for watching and commenting :-) Have a nice evening.

Love the idea of creating a channel into the ditch. I have land issues I’m on a steep hill many natural springs, all was okay until a tractor came into the field to help with land maintenance. This caused a seep which flowed pretty fast and soaked the garden!!! Your water table is high so the more drainage you can add the better. Amazing job
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 3 месяца назад
Oh I would love just one natural spring let alone many. We completely understand with the tractor, we still have the dent in the soil from last August. But, with that said, by doing all of this by hand, we now know the bad drainage is due to the bedrock only being below the surface of the dirt / grass. This gives us knowledge of how to fix the issue. We do think there will be quite a few channels dug around the place, bedrock allowing. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. Enjoy your weekend :-)

Thank you so much for saying so. We are quite proud of ourselves to be honesty. At times a digger would have been lovely, but we just keep going and going and realise we don't really need one now. We have also learned so much about the land, especially the top section. Thank you again. Have a lovely weekend :-)

Good evening Pat, hope you are well. I am pleased our excitement showed as we really were excited and surprised all at the same time. And then we realised we still need to record things haha. The weather is just the weather. I can do any weather except the cold, I hate being cold. Dawn on the other hand overheats in seconds. The rain isn't an issue and it also means we can carry on and keep pushing on to get to the end of the job in hand... or it just draaaaaags on lol. Have a great weekend ahead :-)

The best time for us to deal with drainage is when it is raining, as obvious as that sounds. Once the rain stops and soaks away, it is just nice soil again. We do like a bit of a change now and then, but it is all part of the bigger picture. Thanks for watching and commenting this evening. Have a nice weekend :-)

Dawn and Ben well done on the drainage you have achieved around the outbuildings and getting a waterway along the side of your land.All by manual labour which is some feat in itself. Very well done. You have solved the smoke problem in the bedroom and you are doing the safest thing by putting in a flue liner.It would be impossible to fill in all the holes in the chimney. Glad the surround came out intact.Take care and God Bless you both xx
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 3 месяца назад
Thank you Colette, fingers crossed once we get that little bit cleared in between the outbuildings we should be sorted for that part of the land and then just a bit to finish outside of the house and we should be set for drainage. It’s been a labour of love for sure with clearing the land, lot of hard work but definitely worth every minute to see how the land and drainage work together. Yes, we think the same as you with it’s safer to put the flue in. We can fix the bits within the fireplace but to be able to get to the rest of the chimney is pretty much impossible unless we start pulling the house apart and we’d rather not do that if we don’t have to lol Yes, we’re very glad that came out as well as it did. We’d like to be able to put it back once we get a stove but we will see how that goes once we see what sort of stove would be good for us. Take care and ‘see’ you soon. Xx

You both must be on good drugs as keep on going and working in the rain and that mud. Doing a fantastic job and now getting water to drain from under the out building , slow and small But its moving it. Nice to see the inside of house again and that fireplace now removed and having a big space. Old house with has to be many holes to let fumes through the wall and like the idea of a liner. This house of horrors or mysteries in DIY and getting it cleaned up is keeping your viewers on the edge of their seats. Well done and get to have a Nice St. Patricks weekend with some green food and green Guinness.

I am pretty sure it will catch up with us at some point, the end of the days we ache but come the morning, it’s not so bad again, so we keep going lol yes it was nice to see that water start to run out. We learning a lot really do this ourselves because although we knew there was a lot of water around the place it hadn’t occurred to us because the outbuilding is filled with about a foot or so of soil you couldn’t tell. At least now it can run in and back out again until we sort the drainage properly around the house. It will be lovely to start and do some more to the house again…we’ve held off a little because the stuff that needs doing is going to get pretty dusty and for that we need warmer weather for the doors and windows to be constantly open. So much that we’re itching to get started on! Yeah we think a liner is the best option too, we can repoint the stones of the chimney as far as we can see and get to but we don’t know what else is happening higher up, so yep the liner will be a good thing. 😊 Happy St Patrick’s day to you Simon 😘

Sooo much in today's video! I can't believe the lane belongs to the same house - and I kind of never believed you had that much land, it was so overgrown. When Ben said you'd reached your water storage goal, I thought to myself, "and another 5,000 gallons running through the lot." Once you get roofs back on the outbuildings you should be able to collect and store a lot more for your use and also cut down on the swamp conditions. It's amazing those buildings' footings aren't washed away. You should have pretty loamy soil as it's just been left for leaves and plants to decay for so many years. It would be interesting to see, Ben, if the bedrock is only a few feet below the dirt all across the property. That would explain a lot about the water retention issues. I'd be tempted to plant some butternut squash seeds in that huge tree trunk this summer. How exciting is that fireplace??? I have to admit that I wasn't a fan of the surround; I thought it was some 1930s-50s tile. If it's wood - now *that's* got potential! Exposing the original fireplace opening is so exciting! The lime mortar was falling off due to damp; and the mortar up the flue probably fell out due to the rain and damp over the years. If you can patch up as far as you can reach, just to stabilize the stone, you should be able to drop the liner and attach it to a lovely wood or pellet stove. You have plenty of room, now, for a nice sized one that can be a feature in the room and heat much of the ground floor. I'd mortar as much of the stone as I could reach and render over it, paint it white, and get a big wood stove. Even, if you could find it, one of the old enamel ones that have an oven and a hot plate on top so you can boil your tea water while you watch TV. 😉 Do you watch Sean's World on RU-vid (in your spare time)? He's a builder who worked with the Pethericks for years, but now has his own channel where he's renovating some cottages that are hundreds of years old. In the one where he lives, he has a gorgeous wood stove in the living room. The cottage he's renovating had exactly the same issue with smoke and deteriorated chimney mortar. He's patched what he can, for structural support, and dropping a flue liner. I never cease to be impressed at the amount of hard graft you two put in in a day. I, for one, would turn tail and run in that rain! 😳 I'm beyond thrilled you are getting so many views on your channel. Every ad penny counts toward that kitchen stove!

Right, back... here we go lol. The lane is public but that one building isn't on the side of our land. I say our land but that building sits on it's own bit of land, basically it's foot print. Yes, today we officially hit 5000 litres of water and can't store anymore :-( We will have to decide on the best way forward with storage. More IBC tanks or large tank solutions keeping it all in one place. You are right with the gutters on the outbuildings, that is yet more water and needs more storage. We will get there. The outbuildings are mainly sat on the bedrock, which is great as that isn't ever being washed away. If it was all dirt we may have left digging alone. The puddle Dawn showed on the previous video where the tractor had been has about 6" of water in surrounded by grass. With the bar I was able to push through the grass and some gravel to hit solid rock and you are right, this is exactly why it isn't draining. With some thought and some channels we should be able to sort the issue. Butter nut squash.... as we are not gardeners, can you share why those and why that position please? For info, that position won't get any sun, maybe an hour at the height of summer in the mornings. The fireplace, yes, isn't that great. We were amazed when we saw the arch appear at the top and we were a bit confused to start with until we saw what we had found. You are the second person not to be a fan of the fire, but we will be torn with keeping an original feature but with a stove in it or a fully exposed arch and stone. Decisions decisions... hmmmm. It will be limed as much as we can but on a whole it is looking quite good apart from the bottom area. We have watched a few of Sean's World videos but will have to take another look as a lot of our watching for was reference and learning as we went. What is nice now is that although there is soooooo much work still to be done, we are comfortable in the house and hopefully we will be able to spend some time to relax a little between jobs and catch up on some bits and pieces. It is enjoyable work though so is it really work? We just need to work on starting earlier in the day. We are over the moon with 4k subscribers and still going up. You are so right, every view is one step closer to the range. Thank you so much for ALSO becoming a channel member, you are very kind. Makes my day when you post a video. Everything is slowly coming together!! You probably feel like you are just slogging along, but in reality you are getting much accomplished. The fireplace project is going to be interesting. Still wonder about the wonky one upstairs. Wonder who thought that was a good idea? An older house I lived in was built by a man named Fred. When I lived there Fred was long deceased, but no matter I carried on long one-sided conversations with Fred, wondering aloud about his reasoning behind some of his curious placement of light fixtures, no room for sink in bathroom, outlets........the list just kept growing. I hope to meet him one day when I leave this earth. Kinda fond of Fred. I've never had or wanted a new home. Old houses are just so much more interesting.

Bobbie, you make our day when we read your comments. I am sure Fred has good reason for the things he did and no doubt is looking forward to meeting you too, not too soon though eh! Another commenter said it is a shame the fireplace can't talk. Can you imagine, we would have all of our wonky fireplace questions answered. The long and short with the wonky fireplace is it was built that way as the partitions were always in the house. The kitchen fireplace wasn't built wide enough to then have two flues go up, so, they bodged the bedroom fireplace making it wide enough. So really we are stuck with the wonky fireplace. I am not a fan of that wonky fireplace, never have been. Oh well lol. Have a great weekend and hopefully see you Monday. Give our love to Fred :-)

The nice cast iron fire surround was manufactured by the Falkirk Iron Co. However for safety and efficiency reasons a wood burning stove is the better option. We initially had a similar cast iron fireplace in our stone farmhouse but replaced it with a stove. The stove installation is critical - flue should be lined with flexible liner and insulating infill.
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 2 месяца назад
Hi Tom. You are right with the manufacturer, it is the same as the other two open fires we have upstairs. Dawn did get to see what it was once we turned it around but sadly got edited out. We will be going with a stove now that the liner is fitted. We had no alternative really due to the smoke escaping in the loft space above the bedroom. Thank you for watching and commenting :-)

You've mentioned that the outbuildings might be 200 years old. Do you suppose that the building beside the lane which you don't own was at one time a cottage where people lived? If that were the case, they would have had a well somewhere nearby. You might be able to dig or drive a hand pump well near the bottom of the property. Would probably not be good for drinking but could be used for a vegetable garden or animals. The fireplace removal has provided an opportunity to learn lime mortar repair :) Always enjoy your videos and seeing the progress you make every day.

Good afternoon John, we hope you are well. It is possible it was the house of this land area, there were so many buildings, John, maybe up to 10 shown on the old maps, maybe more. There are two wells we know of. One is on the lane we filmed the primroses on but is lower than the ditch so is contaminated and a second, again according to the old maps is on the land to the left of the house as you look at it. We are hoping to be able to find a source of water and maybe dig our own well type thing. At the moment though it is showers for everyone as we have LOADS of water. Ask me how it is going after a week of no rain though haha. Thank you for always joining us John. Have a nice, and hopefully not too cold weekend :-)

I have had a home with an open fireplace and then converted with a liner to a wood stove and I can say that the wood stove was more efficient for heating than the open fireplace. The open fireplace seemed to take as much of the warm air up the flue as it did heat the room. Especially while you were letting the fire die out before you went to bed and could risk closing the damper on the fireplace.
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 3 месяца назад
Yes, a log burner is the way forward for us, also, with a flue liner of 6", we shouldn't have an open fire. The open fire in the bedroom is great when it is at it's hottest but the room soon cools down, as you say, when letting the fire go out. I don't know what percentage of heat is lost up the chimney but I would guess 70%. The room size suggest up to 9Kw stoves, and I do like my heat, so an 8 or 9 it will probably be :-) Have a great weekend and thank you for watching and commenting :-)

Well Hello There!! A wonky bridge, you have clearly watched my Solar Panel frame video to know I am not the best at making things hahaha. Now we know... in one side and now out the other haha. Chuffed to bits with the fireplace. I have a 8kw stove we are considering, that big for the size of room, but also torn with putting the old framing back in with the fire grate and hinged part removed. Gutters on those old buildings would help immensely too. At least the building you're working in front/behind of now. Since you've got the edge of that tin roof to use you can funnel all that roof water right to that ditch you dug. That will really help the wetness a lot in that bedrock field you are working in.So smart going digging that ditch. On those backfields that you cleared some type of ditch running down the center of that field crossing under the wood chips so widthwise not lengthwise in the field. That would really help funnel water into that bigger ditch that you got and cleared. Then you could make a little stone bridge or something to go over the bridge. Which would look really quaint.
@thecornerhouseproject

Hi Barbara, I think you have just typed our master plan hahaha. The building will have a gutter and either go into the ditch or into a water tank for harvesting for the house, is it surprising how much water comes off the flat roof. We have chatted about ditches across the width to join the ditches either side of the land, it should make a huge difference. The bridge is a nice idea down there. I am looking forward to getting something done for up the top for when we dig out down to the bedrock. Thank you for watching and commenting. Have a nice weekend :-)

The fireplace is a very old fireplace. So in the old days they had to have big pots in there. So they needed more headroom to reach into that fireplace I am sure. You're smart not using that fireplace with what's going on because the whole house could catch on fire. Never can be too careful with that kind of thing. You'll get so much more heat off of a wood stove. Anyways, it's a smart thing to do.

There will be an update with the liner in tomorrows video :-) That fireplace is in the parlour which was rarely used. The fire in the kitchen is the big one. We will be opening that right back to how it was originally when the weather warms up. We are really looking forward to that. Thank you for replying.

Ohhh brilliant !!! Thoroughly enjoying the drain digging and excavation and then you move on to fireplaces !!!! A dog grate would be perfect in the open fireplace ,i can just imagine it but because of the smoke escaping you will need the liner. So a multifuel stove with 2 opening doors at the front ,and the exposed stone behind will be perfect !!!!......in my opinion 😂😂😂😂

Haha thought you might like a little fire action! We were sooo surprised to see that. I think we assumed we’d find the usual squared off fireplace not much bigger than the fire surround that went it, so it was amazing to see that appear and so much bigger! I love the sound of the 2 door stove, that sounds just perfect! So….i very much like your opinion! 😘

Hi Kate and good evening to you. We like to think of it as a little stream, and a big stream when it rains a lot haha, when there is no rain it is a slight trickle from land water. Certainly worth it. We feel like we are getting on really well and getting closer to the end of this stage of the land, from there we can take it easier. The surprise behind the fire was lovely, we are chuffed to bit. We don't think there has been anything behind it, just a fireplace until the cast iron one was fitted. We don't know if that was from day one or at a later date. Have a lovely weekend. Thank you for watching, commenting and being one of our channel members :-)

Certainly looks like the original fireplace. I like originality but a liner solves the smoke issue and a multifuel stove is vastly more efficient. Cleaning the interior and repointing the stone and having a free standing stove would look great. Could you re-use the cast iron fireplace upstairs if fireplace opening suitable/wide enough?
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 3 месяца назад
Good evening James. Yes, we think it was built that way and was either going to be used like that or was waiting for the fire that we just removed. We have to go with a liner really as even if we re-lime and fix the smoke issue, what is saying in 1 months times limes breaks down somewhere else up the chimney. A stove is the way forward for us and probably in the newly found fireplace with the stones exposed. Heat is a must in the house on the cold days and a stove is the answer. Not sure if we could fit the fire elsewhere as we haven't measured, but I think we would need to widen both of the fireplaces upstairs. I could be wrong though. Thanks for watching and commenting tonight :-)

Oh it leaks Michael and in some order. We were so pleased when the chimney was opened up and we could finally use the open fire to get heat in that side of the house to start warming and drying it out. It was after a week or so we realised smoke appeared in the bedroom above each time the fire was lit. We may be able to lime it and hope for the best, but a liner is the safest option going forward. Thanks for the advice though, it is always good to know for the future. Have a nice evening :-)

Many people during the 16th 17th and 18th centuries died of carbon monoxide poisoning from smoky fires. I would go with the flue liner and reduce your risk of fire and and poisoning and I think your builder would agree with me. Open fires are also notorious for not providing much warmth.
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 3 месяца назад
Hi Jean, thank you for commenting and your advice. We will be having the flue liner not matter what and although an open fire is lovely to look at, a wood stove will be the way forward, as like you say, open fires aren't efficient and do give out smoke. A stove will be able to heat the room, which is much needed to dry out the walls, in no time. It is deciding what look we will go for which is the hard part. Use the original fire or keep the "new" fireplace exposed. Thank you again for watching and commenting :-)

I see a proper french drain in your future. Maybe piping part of the drainage in the front of the property to divert into the stream--which can double as both diversion to manage the land as well as a lovely feature. There is a fair amount of running water there--without having the rest of the property managed yet. But, it is Ireland--so water, water, everywhere. Hopefully you will not need to have a rebuild of the fireplace. I had to do that before the new liner could be placed. But TBH, as mad as I was at my surprise, I did feel safer when all was done. Looking forward to Bob the Builder doing his magic .
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 3 месяца назад
Ooh I do hope we don’t have to rebuild anything to do with the fireplace, fingers crossed just some repointing of what we can see and get to. Hopefully the missing mortar doesn’t go any further up. We would love a proper French drain around the house but we think we will have to settle for not much more than what we’ve already done around the house as we sit on a huge rock and to cut through it will be nigh on impossible lol. So for now we have scraped some small channels all around the house that run to the ditch on one side and the other side still needs channeling across to end up at the ditch too. This has worked very well so far. We’re hoping that once we do it properly it will have the desired effect in keeping the water away from the house.

@SweetOne. 3 месяца назад
Hobbit tracks all over the back garden (teasing). In the trench that you dug out at the base of the outbuilding line either side with stone and put stone slabs overtop to make a path with a drain tunnel underneath to the ditch. You can do the same thing between the outbuildings so that you can still walk between the buildings with the drain tunnel under the path. Amazing job outside!! The fireplace removal is wonderful too. fill some of those holes inside the fireplace to keep critters out even if you use the flue liner / chimney pipe. I am curious what your chimney guy will say about being able to repair it without a chimney pipe? Never hurts to look at options. If you take a look around some antique shops or recycle places you might be able to find a stone/marble fireplace and mantle surround that would be better than the wooden one you took off. I wonder what the original fireplace looked like or if that insert was the original? Did you find a date or the Iron workers business operation dates? You know I love a good rabbit hole
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 3 месяца назад
Good morning Janie, how are you this morning? Teasing aside, out two feet together only add up to a mans foot so I think you could be right with the hobbit tracks haha. A little spoiler before you get us doing more work.... Digging yesterday revealed the old generation had already thought of the stones at the bottom as Dawn found them at the exact level we were digging too. Some larger flat stones and then some cobbles in the gaps. Sadly they aren't all the way along but there are a good few. It is raining today so hopefully it will help wash them off a bit. So you clearly right with your advice, thank you :-) The fireplace is a great discovery. We are now torn though, do we go fireplace bake in without the old grate or expose it all for a big feature. You know Dawn, it will be clean enough to eat your dinner off and limed to death with all the holes gone. He might have some input on the fire but probably not, he is very laid back with everything and takes it all in his stride. We will certainly be asking him though. Good idea with the second hand places. It would be nice to keep it all as original as possible but looking doesn't hurt does it and then we have more options too. Dawn did read the name of the manufacturer but the editing removed it. It is the same company as the other two grates upstairs I think, but Dawn will recap on this when we do the fire. I can't remember which bedroom video says the name of those grates but we will make a point of putting it in. Nothing like a rabbit hole haha. Thank you as always Janie, have a lovely weekend :-)

Depending on the size of the log burner you plan to use, it might be that you could remove the log grate section and re-use the iron surround with the tiles whilst inserting the new burner where the grate was? Hi Adam, you are spot on and this is one of the options that we will be struggling with when fitting a stove. Do we keep, as you suggested or do we dress the "new" fireplace, expose it and make it a new feature. But, we are going to need plenty of WD40 to loosen those screws / bolts. Isn't it exciting :-) Thanks for watching and commenting (reading our minds). Have a nice weekend Adam :-)

Beside that Dawn must have Duch ancestors Digging ditches en canal water… have you thought of a woodburner were you see fire and wat heats your water system? They are amazing and have and have a 90% efficiency burning wood. We had one and will build a new one in our new old house.

I can’t deny I like a bit of digging! lol the ditches are sooo satisfying too because you get to see the standing water start to trickle and flow. Wood burner is probably going to be the way we go with as open fires like you say aren’t very fuel efficient and we really need some decent heat on that side of the house. We will go with a range for the kitchen with a back boiler so that we can heat the water and the house with radiators at some point too. 😊

First, I’ve been so excited because yesterday we noticed that the tulip poplar were bursting with blossoms and so were the non-fruit baring pear…so, spring has hit Maryland. Ben I felt saw the dirt on your forehead, then the soot smudge on the side of your nose…definitely, signs you’ve been busy. Dawn, I don’t know too much about Victorian domestic, but I bet you’ve been googling like I have. Seems that arch was very common in Victorian houses. I’m wondering if there was a different hearth there and it was switched out to a smaller square one in the early 20th century. The style of the mantle and the tiles look more early 20th, than mid 19th, but again it’s out of my wheelhouse. Are you two planning to put a retaining wall to keep the “walkway” from getting filled up again? I was quite shocked how much water was coming out of your out buildings. Enjoy your weekend…I’m working on my kitchen garden tomorrow.

Fantastic news with Spring reaching you and your blossoms sound great. We are still waiting for the blossom on the apple trees, which might be sometime yet, but our hopes are high. Ah, you fell for the "I have mud and soot on my face" prank... It really did look like I had been working hard didn't it hahahaha. We think (guessing really) that is was built like that for strength and then the cast iron fireplace put in but we have no way of knowing for sure. It doesn't look like it was used prior to the Victorian / Edwardian fire, but again, it is only guessing really as we may never find out. The pathway will have some sort of retaining thingy to stop it falling again. I would tell you our plans but that would spoil the surprise haha. LOADS of water started coming out so we knew at that moment we were doing the right thing. Now that it is all dug out (Dawn working yesterday) the rain water is away from the wall which is a great step forwards. As always Dory, thank you so much for joining us and sharing our adventure and have a great weekend, hopefully checking on your blossom :-)

Thank you, 4k is amazing and climbing and you are one of those so thank you :-) The ditch is getting there and working better each time Dawn does something with it. It has made the world of difference already with the back of outbuilding. Will the bit of rain you had make any difference? I am picturing something like a wildlife programme where is has been dry for 6 months and with a single rain droplet there is an acre of green appearing, am I over imagining do you think? haha. Thank you so much for always being here and we hope everything is well with you :-)

@thecornerhouseproject 3 месяца назад
Hi Diane, thanks for always joining us and commenting :-) Well...... we don't think it was used before the Edwardian one went in. We wonder if it is a case of the arch is stronger than a flat piece of steel but was never intended to be used without the Edwardian fire. Sadly I don't think we will ever know the truth, but we do know it is exciting haha. Thanks again Diane, have a nice weekend :)

wow what a wonderful find behind your fireplace. You need a small boy to go up the chimney to see the condition or could you hire a snake camera ? I know you love paddling in mud but I would suggest you prioritise the ditch and your drainage channels that way the land will be much drier and easier to move. Have a good weekend XX

Hahahaha, just pop yourself up there and shout down if you see anything dodgy..... like a small boy hahahaha. We are chuffed to bits with the fireplace find, it really has thrown a curve ball with what we decide in the end though. Stove in tiles fireplace, stove in hole... open fire, probably not the open fire. We had a good day today with the rest of the walkway and due rain later so we will get to see how well it works now it is dug out. Have a lovely weekend too Carol :-) xx

Good evening Marian. That was our plan when we bought the house, it was going to be so simple.... and then we found the bedrock sticking up and around the house and the electricity company needing a giant breaker to just get the pole in. Once we have cleared all of the remaining soil and grass from around the house, we will have a better idea of what we can do, if anything. Getting down to the bottom of the outbuilding has been a good exercise though as it gives us an idea of what to expect when we do it around the house. It isn't everyday you start to expose the foundations of your house lol. Thank you for watching and commenting. Have a nice weekend.

I think all the soot would have to be scrubbed off for it to be rendered to block holes. So liner would make sense. But losing the open fire😢.

A good video, really enjoyed it. Much love from Oklahoma USA Jackie 🇺🇸💖 PS oh my gosh the fireplace fine is fantastic. Now can you guys have an open fire? Yeah I bet you're going to need a steel flue put up there because when you have to line the whole thing because all the bricks up where I bet have cracks in them? Man, Ben cleaned up that fireplace mess up super fast 😂 And his face at the end lol 🤣 Mary Poppins
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 3 месяца назад
Aww thanks Jackie! Glad you liked it. Fireplace is great isn’t it? We really weren’t expecting to find that and it was a bit wow to see it! We’re probably going to get a wood burning stove to go in there, if we were to get a inset stove we could put most of the original fireplace back but we’re not sure whether we will do that or go for a freestanding one yet, will have to have a think once the flue liner is in. Yeah we suspect there will be missing mortar further up the chimney too so going to be difficult to get that done without a lot of work needing to be done, so a flue liner will be the safer and less time consuming way forward. Haha yeah he was really fast at cleaning that fireplace, it’s a shame we can’t put ourselves on Timelapse in real life and get every job done at that speed! lol 🤣 Mary Poppins! Undoubtedly the pair of you will have abs of steel with all that raking and pushing about. doubt you could seal the inner chimney safely, flue would be best and easier. However, I've seen flues attached to hoods of sorts that make an open firepit possible. someone a long while ago, assessed the lay of the land and designed drainage to flow to the bottom of it. Been loving the music and editing you have been doing Ben, and I think a lot as well. Love that your channel shares a bit of your lives and not just about project facts and acts like a lot of them. Crack on!
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 3 месяца назад
Hahaha yeah we probably will! It’s hurting in my shoulder muscles today I can tell you! Yeah it’s a shame with chimney but we can’t be sure there aren’t any holes elsewhere so a liner is probably the best and safest thing to do. That’s a good idea with the hood for a fire pit. I do think we will most likely go with a stove just to keep it all neat and contained. It’s been great to do the land like we have done because we get to see the things that were put it place all those years ago. We love it because it’s like going out and solving little mysteries all the time! He’s been doing a really good job on the editing and the music. We sometimes think “ooh not sure if we filmed enough to make a video” then Ben starts editing and adds music and it just ends up looking really good, he’s like a magician! I don’t think we could leave ourselves and our lives out of the videos even if we tried lol it’s just not us! ❤️✨

What a fantastic discovery, my parents found a beautiful arched brick fireplace about this size in their home many years ago, they pointed the bricks at the bottom put a flue and wood burning stove in, the heat from it was amazing, hope you don’t cover it up, it’s a lovely feature, you two are definitely hard working, garden is looking great!

Hi Jen, thank you for joining us and commenting. Our kitchen fireplace has the arches bricks and we will be restoring that at some point, but the one in the living room may just be like that for strength. We will be looking at all options of what to do with it. It will definitely have a wood stove in it, but at the moment we don't know if it will all remain open or if the original fireplace will go around the stove. I bet your parents surround looks lovely which is why it will be a hard choice for us. We don't stop when something needs doing and at the moment... everything needs doing haha. Thank you again, have a nice weekend :)

Oooh marvelous finding the original fireplace. I confess that I never felt the hearth was original and wondered what was behind. After seeing a few other channels that have revealed fireplaces, it isn't unusual to find that the original width of the opening is only revealed after a vertical layer of side bricks (left and right of the opening) are removed. Do you think your opening could be wider or do you think that's the original width?
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 3 месяца назад
Good evening Tracy, how are you today? We think it is originally that width and has only ever had that fire in it. Looking at the left and right sides it looks pretty final but we are always open to having a little dig about to see if it may be wider. Even if it is the final width, it could look lovely with a bit of lime and a nice wood stove in it. Or, we keep the surround with a nice wood stove in it. It has been a lovely day here today, no rain. What is it like for you at the moment? Have a lovely weekend and thank you :-)

We're well, we had a real nice day yesterday for us to do a walk through the cemetery and saw snowdrops (thought about you Brits as those are popular over there) but I hesitate to get too "spring" excited as here in Ontario we don't put the snow shovel away until April 17th to be safe, haha.@@thecornerhouseproject
