Although this video is for the 2000 - 2005 Toyota RAV4 the steps are also very similar for the 1994 - 2000 RAV4 & 1997 - 2003 RAV EV AS WELL AS several other Toyota vehicles such as the Corolla, Camry, Celica, 4Runner, Avalon as well as several of the Lexus models.
IF you are removing the fuel pump this video will also help in that regard as I explain and show you how to remove the entire fuel pump from the fuel tank. Just follow these steps in reverse.

Thank God this looks easy enough to do. Pretty sure my pump went out, now I know I can just order a new one and access it thru the back to change it. Looks simple enough. Thanks for the video my man.

The actual fuel filter is a section of the assembly just above the strainer, it costs around $20 USD.

It can be intimidating if you're not used to doing it. Putting the fuel filter/strainer inside the tank is the dumbest thing ever lol. I've always thought that smh.

I have a 2008 Rav4 Sport. Toyota in their infinite wisdom decided NOT TO incorporate access panels for the pump NOR the fuel level unit (which is separate and at another part of the tank). Of course this means that these units are now built to never fail on these vehicles like the earlier models with such panels (like Hell). So now I have the pleasure of having to remove the entire tank or cut my own access panels. How can the people that make such idiotic designs ever sleep at night.

Quick question War Pony. Dumb question perhaps, but after disconnecting battery and working on it, then reconnecting shit , do we have to run through the motions of re-training the idle the same way we have to every time we get a new battery?

Just replaced my pump relay because car turns over but does not start. Am I not supposed to hear the fuel pump "turn on" for a second when I turn the key? 2005 RAV-4. Probable cause of problem: a bunch of warning lights came on, car running perfectly, so I disconnected the negative terminal for 30 seconds and re-attached. And there my troubles began. Any clues? Thanks...

Yeah, you will hear the pump for a few seconds but you could have a bad connection or a weak fuel pump. I've seen them work sporadically before finally going out. Check the fuses for the fuel pump and ignition. Sorry I got your message late. Let us know if you got it fixed and what your problem was.

I bought the fuel strainer at a local parts store. As far as the fuel pump Amazon and eBay are good places to find the fuel pumps as well as parts geeks, rock auto and A1 auto. 👍🏽

Great video buddy. I have something going on with my 2004 rav 4 keeps throwing a code for the gas cap and when it does it trips check engine and cvs traction. Thinking of following this video as I have bought several new gas caps to no avail.

You could also research “vehicle smoke testing” in your area and have the evap system smoke tested for leaks. If it’s small enough the repair won’t cost much. Most places give you the option to have them fix it or they tell you where it is and mark it to let you fix it yourself. But fyi Toyotas do not like the cheaper made gas caps. That doesn’t sound like your problem, though.

Sounds like a leak in your EVAP system. Possiably a purge solenoid as well. Garage if don't have knowledge to Diag.

Thank you for the video. I have a 2007 Toyota Rav4, i need to replace the fuel pump. Could the pump be accessed from inside the car, or do you have to lower the fuel tank to get to the pump. Thank you.

Yes, your fuel pump is in the sane location as in this video. 👍🏽 **edit: the 2007 is the first year of the body change. There isn’t an access door. The fuel tank would have to lowered.

I see that access panel to the fuel pump behind the driver side I was just wondering what's the other access panel that's not seen in your video it's on the other side the passenger back side that resembles the same thing

For some reason some vehicles have an empty port on the other side. Some Dodge/Chrysler, Toyota/Lexus, Nissan/infinity’s, Honda’s etc. have a port on the opposite side. Some makes also have separate fuel level modules that go in the opposite side. There are some Cadillacs that way. I just Did a Dodge Caliber that has another port on the opposite side that is empty.

Anyone know what fuel filter to buy for a 2002? I was told parts shop couldn't help me I had to take it to a dealer and toyota won't help either.

Search for a "fuel pump strainer" not a fuel filter. Rockauto has them for a just a few bucks. Rockauto -> Toyota -> 2002 -> Rav4 -> 2.0 -> Fuel and Air -> Fuel Pump Strainer. Assuming you want to change what he does in this video.

You can tell a real mechanic from a DIYer in the lack of an immediate response. We tend to have very little time to handle the day to day RU-vid communications as we are busy working-it’s our daily battle. First off it’s always good to get the DTC (trouble codes you are getting) and state them when asking about why your check engine light is on. You can get a generic code reader at Walmart, Harbor Freight, on Amazon or eBay.

You do not need to run the fuel out to do this job. It’s a little less messy but either way be careful about the fumes. Open all windows or doors & the lift gate. 👍🏽

On a 2002 Rav4, Is the fuel filter attached to the fuel pump (inside the tank), the ONLY fuel filter?

Yes. The fuel strainer is inside the gas tank attached to the bottom of the fuel pump. 👍🏽

@@countrycarl6233 If your fuel pump is on the fritz of failing and fuel pressure is low you would have other sensors pick up the inconsistencies. In this case I would do a full tuneup including fuel filter/strainer change as well as change the oil/oil filter and clean, replace the engine air filter. Think of it as a “reset”. Doing this is the first in the process of elimination. 👍🏽

@@countrycarl6233 an 02 4 cylinder should get around 20 mpg in the city, 25-27 on the highway.
