This is a 2000 Ford Windstar SEL with the 3.8 V6 engine. It current sits at 204,000 miles but has had the motor and heads re-done. This rough idle issue was a gradual thing, the previous owner stated that when they cleaned the EGR it went back to running perfectly smooth and plenty of power. The same issue went on to the second owner with the same remedy curing it, but after a short time, this "remedy" no longer worked, the rough idle. The second owner opened the hood and dumped a bunch of cash into it with no results. The Third owner did the same thing with the hope that someone had missed something, no luck. I (4th owner) purchased the van and decided to be the hero and figure out what the hell was going on, ran the scope and scanners and saw that #3 cylinder was indicating some leaky valves, but i was convinced it was the torque converter, as this felt like a heavily unbalanced tire would feel, and it was somewhat RPM related. Well after getting the motor out EVERYTHING was checked, the heads completely gone through, super cleaned the block, pistons, and the cylinders looked amazing for 204K. oil pan and pickup all checked, new oil pump, harmonic balancer, torque converter, flex plate, timing gears, checked for any play in the balance shaft, bushings and bearings are PERFECT. Before removing the timing gears and chain, it was verified that the balance shaft/timing gears where all correct, and they were, so that put that theory of the balance shaft being out of sync to bed. Also, the camshaft synchronizer was checked, new cap and synchro replaced. All hoses that looked suspect were replaced, all new gaskets, vacuum ports checked, EGR replaced with brand new, brand new DPFE, EGR ports inside the manifold were cleaned extensively, these apparently are an issue on these motors. All new top quality gaskets were used for reassembly, and Ford filters were used, and the SOB still vibrates just like it did $2000.00 before lol. I guess the only really good thing is, it did not get any worse.
