I discovered that my 2000 GMC project truck had the rear axle swapped at some point and the rear gears did not match the front. To solve this I got a used complete rear axle from a junk yard and swapped it into my truck. You can tell which gears you have by looking at the sticker in the glove box. There will be a GT or a GS code in the list which tells you which gears you have. Mine had a GT4 code which meant I had 3.73 gears. The new axle also happened to have an Eaton locker which is code G80, so the truck got an upgrade.

FYI I’m a mason, and the way you have those blocks under your stands are dangerous. They are lying in the most weakest possible position. The holes (cores) should be up. Thanks for this video😊

Good to know, thanks. I generally try to use wood blocks as they aren't prone to breaking like concrete can.

How did u take off the ujoint from the axle? I’m going to be doing this over the weekend
@nates831
@nates831 3 года назад
The U joint is held onto the pinion by four bolts that hold on the u joint cap straps. The u joint itself is pressed into the drive shaft.
@jacobycampbell8834
@jacobycampbell8834 3 года назад
how did you get the bolts to line up in the hole on the leaf springs
@nates831
@nates831 3 года назад
If you are talking about the U bolts that hold the axle to the spring, they can be tricky. Most of the time they are sprung outward, wider than the holes in the plate. I usually start one side, then pry/beat the other side into the hole. Hope that helps.

Hi I have a 99 2500 Silverado 6.0 with front end damage and a 2000 1500 5.3 with rear end damage.. wondering if I can swap the 2500 rear end into the 1500?? Any help is much appreciated..
@nates831
@nates831 3 года назад
I believe you could swap the 2500 rear into the 1500. You would need to measure the spring pad distance to make sure they are the same. The big issue would be gear ratio if the 1500 is four wheel drive. Here are a list of the codes you will find on the glove box sticker that tell you what gear ratio the truck has. GT4 Rear Axle: 3.73 Ratio GT5 Rear Axle: 4.10 Ratio GU4 Rear Axle: 3.08 Ratio GU6 Rear Axle: 3.42 Ratio G80 Rear Axle: Locking axle

You know how they tell ya to mark drive shaft and pinion so you put back on the same! Did you have any problem there?
@nates831
@nates831 3 года назад
I had no issues, but I did take it easy on the first drive just to make sure.

Hey man Awesome Video!!!! I have a few questions. 1. How long did this take you and was it hard? 2. So I know in your case you changed out the whole rear end cuz you wanted to have your gears back to match the front, but in my case, I also have 3.73 gears but it’s only a 2wd truck, and I’m wondering if it’s possible to only change out the differential itself and upgrading it to a g80 like yours, without having to change out the whole rear end, since I don’t care about changing my gear ratio.
@nates831
@nates831 4 года назад
As far as I remember it took me two days to swap the axle. It wasn't that hard, having an impact helps a lot. You can swap just the differential gears, but they can be tricky. You have to set the pinion to ring gear lash and the pinion running torque. It is much easier to get a used assembly like I did. I hope that helps.

I'm a little late here. But does anyone know if a Silverado yr2000 rear axle will fit a 03 Silverado?

Yes it will
@generalelectric8403

Do you think a single cab 2004 differential would fit on an 2006 extended cab.
@nates831
@nates831 2 года назад
That really depends. The axle housing should be the same size, but there are several gear options. You would need to read code in the glove box and make sure gears are the same, unless it is two wheel drive.

You know what kind of oil this differential need?
@nates831
@nates831 Год назад
Any synthetic gear oil will do. I used Royal Purple. You don't need any friction modifiers as this is not a limited slip, rather a mechanical locker.

I dont' think that's a G80! I'm pretty sure that's an aftermarket diff carrier. The G80 doesn't have the clutch pack that you can see in the carrier.
@JVBL1
@JVBL1 Месяц назад
You sure about that bc I’m getting ready to start looking for the G80 code at the junk yards since I need to replace my rear axle
@alafrosty
@alafrosty Месяц назад
@@JVBL1 G80s use a different technology solution to achieve a locking diff. The one in the pic, with clutches, is a limited slip diff, but it's not a G80. The G80 will lock the rear diff once the RPM difference between the wheels is activated by centripetal force of weights on springs in the carrier.
@nates831
@nates831 11 дней назад
Guess I didn't show it well, but that was a G80. It didn't have clutch packs, it had counterweights that engage the locker when one wheel spins faster than the other.

G80's are only slightly better than a flaming paper bag of dog turds.

Probably depends if you are trying to do burnouts with one or just not get stuck in mud and snow.

@@nates831 I don't like how unpredictable they are. Don't work over a certain speed. Design that should have never made it into the real world.
