FYI anyone doing this job. -Do not snug cover bolts down until you seat the harmonic balancer past the seal. This centers the seal on the harmonic balancer and will increase the life of the seal. You will need to pull it back off to tighten two of the small bolts on the driver side of the engine. -Recommend changing the balancer if yours is 20 years old. -RTV is only necessary where the paper gasket meets the oil pan gasket, copper spray a gasket on the paper works great, and not as messy. Not that RTV doesn't work as well. -Really not recommended to put a new chain on old sprockets, the teeth wear significantly. I have never heard of the chain being the cause of a 4.0L failure, but it is good practice just to change it when the timing cover is off. Note, that front crank seal is very difficult to remove with the cover in place. You will probably end up causing additional damage and removing the cover anyways.

At Dan's house, the kids don't sing "the foot bone's connected to the leg bone, the leg bone's connected to the....", they sing the XJ version instead. Altogether now, "The thermostat led me to the water pump, the water pump led me to the timing chain, the timing chain led me to the crankshaft, the..." 🥳🥳🥳

Great explanation, as usual. In the past, I have put the pulley back on, with the cover still loose, to make sure the seal is even, round the crank, then tightened down the cover bolts. Not sure if it is necessary though!

I was going to comment the same thing. The FSM calls out the use of a "timing case cover alignment and seal installation tool" to center the crank in the seal. I've heard of the same suggestion to install the new balancer before torqing to ensure correct alignment.

That is the the correct way. Doing that centers the seal and make it last longer.

Just checked out your channel and your Instagram. Figured you for a fellow Long Islander. I left the Island (Central Islip) in ‘89 when I was 21 after a tour of duty in the Navy, but, it never leaves you. I grew up with a dad who had an AMC Jeepster Commando and going wheeling on the dunes. I’m in Northern Nevada now and, between the high desert and the Sierras, it is a veritable playground for all things Jeep. Keep up the great work you’re doing! You must know that your reach on RU-vid is huge and so, so needed.

Great video! Got a big question hopping you might respond. I put a 99 TJ engine into my 93 XJ, and after about a year i noticed a knocking sound, decided to do a inspection of connecting rod bearings and all where okay, noticed timming chain was very loose, soo i decided to order a cloyes timming chain and new sprockets. when i pulled timming cover off i noticed the timming chain guide was broken into 3 peices, and very hard. well, the new timming kit was missing the chain guide but my father inlaw had a spare one, also kinda old and hard. anyways finished the install and the knocking noise was gone! was very happy, and then a month later it started comming back, and now its very bad on first start up but goes away quickly once its warmed up. my question is, can a timming chain guide on these 4.0L engines cause it to sound like its knocking, if its not there?? It more sounds like a clanking noise. or is the cloyes timming chain stretched over the last couple years lol... and without the guide is rattling against my timming cover?

the better Idea is to just DO AWAY with the Fan All together and add an electric fan run cooler better MPG and just eliminates problems Important need to tuck some past or sealant on pan gasket and the corners where the pan reaches the timing cover that is a leek just waiting to happen
@ProjectDanH
@ProjectDanH 2 года назад
It sealed very well, I did the rear main shortly after and re sealed the whole pan again. Never had a clutch fan issue... Maybe wel do an Efan mod later.. Thanks for watching!

You know what's ironic about this, That bolt that was loose on yours and that fell out, Was the same exact way on my WJ. That could have honestly been catastrophic if it would have got caught behind the crank pulley

Story time- Had a '92, my ol' lady's, developed a ridiculous oil leak. Qt. a week, no joke. Nearly impossible to find b/c by the time I got to it, everything was caked and baked on and dripping all the way back to the tailpipe. Short story, I tried finding the highest, wettest oil. Used fluorescent dyes too.. They just got blown around too. Could've sworn it was coming from the timing chain area cover thing. Spent some srs time getting to learn new things. Replaced the chain, gears, etc.. Got it done right, still leaking like she just wanted to party all the time. I was mad. Still am 8+ yrs later, fr. Bought a compressor and tools just for that damn job. Lesson- Check your GD "oil filter adapter" o-rings. It's ONE bolt that's a pia to the block on passenger side when the filter is off. Firstly, triple check the o-ring set to actually fit like you need. I could not find them (x2) locally on the east coast at any box store. They're labeled to work, but nah for me. '92 OR '98 xjs. Amz to the rescue.

I hear ya. i have a 92 blazer had a huge oil leak that turned out to be the oil filter adapter o ring. I had to put die in to find it. the trick with die is to check as soon ap possible to see where it originates.

I need to do this on my 04 daily, my front seal leaks, and my rear main leaks. Gonna wait till fall, when temps are a little kinder. I got all the parts including timing chain, gears, oil pump and pickup tube just in case and while I'm there. Was gonna do my 95 too, but number 3 rod decided to start knocking a bit. Still quiet on startup but it's there along with 10 psi oil pressure at idle after warmed up. Yep, that one will get the engine yanked out...hmmm, maybe a stroker...

At what mileage do I need to think about doing the timing chain? I'm at 116k on a 1998 and the harmonic balancer needs doing as the rubber elements are failing; but I hadn't realised chains were an item to consider changing on the 4.0! Wouldn't want to ignore it if its on a count down.
@ProjectDanH
@ProjectDanH 2 года назад
For the most part it only needs changed under the following circumstances: 1. When it breaks. 2. When it gets so loose it is scraping the timing cover. 3. When you are doing other work that requires removing it, opening the cover to do other work, etc. (a might as well while you're at it thing).

I have an annoying issue it’s that exact same little squeak at the very end of the video it’s stops and goes very like 2-3 seconds if someone could possibly answer why out xjs are doing it. In the video it starts when he starts up the car at the end.
