Today I take a look at a 2001 Saab 9-3 Convertible. This car features a 2.0L turbocharged engine, producing 205hp. I didn't find many surprises within the car aside from Saab's normal quirks. It proved to be a decently fun car while still maintaining its composure on the road. Comment below what kind of content you want to see in the future!

I'm 17 and I just bought this car as my first car. I have a 5-speed manual and the acceleration on second gear is very fast for a car that only cost me $2400 to buy.

Good video mate. Those cars have a ton of hidden features to them! It's very euro in that sense with all of its hidden features and functions; and yet it has a very basic interior.

Bad review, back seats? Are excellent for a convertible, sits 2 comfortably, build quality? I have seen loads of rusty bmws and Mercedes, from this period, so Saab build quality is better, wind noise? Very good for a convertible, I would say excellent, it's possible that your roof needs sound proofing, but one of the quietest convertibles one can buy

The back seats have almost no leg room if the driver/passenger have their seats in a comfortable position. Very difficult to get back there

Auto Autopsy in comparison to other convertibles, it's pretty good, once front seats are arranged to create more legroom, I drove 300 miles with 4 adults, the rear passengers said it was very comfortable for them, and they are not midgets.

Actually I own a 2001 Saab 9-3 Convertible and was very surprised by the amount of legroom it has. The interesting fact is, it might look look it's very little room, but the way it is designed, you sink into the back seat (as you correctly noticed - they are far back) and your legs don't push against the front seats. I rode in the back numerous times with a 6ft person driving in the front, I am 6.1ft.

Yeah...the build quality in this gen SAAB FAR exceeds the NG 9-3s. They're built in Trollhattan, not the Opel plant in Russelhiem. It would be like preferring the build quality of a modern day Mercedes compared to a W-124 model.

@@rollotwomassey I dont even like Saabs, but convertibles were not made in Trollhatten, they were made in Finland by Valmet Automotive. Also, this is a terrible review, I'm 6'1 and I had a 5'10 rear passenger yesterday and we agreed there was a surprising amount of leg room for a vert. Older Civic/Sentra/Corolla sized sedans had similar leg room, and all the Civic coupes have ZERO rear leg room, as basis for comparison

I have a 02 4 door 93. Not very linear, lots of turbo lag

Sold one of these for $700, had rod knock, brake booster died, and smoked nice and white. Nonetheless an amazing car, very comfortable back seats, actually, and accelerates like crazy! It's an awesome car, this review doesn't give it justice.

@NFSCalex I just bought one the brakes are horrible. It has new pads and rotors how did you know the brake booster died?

I work for a car dealership and we just took in a 2002 se convertible 5-speed, 153k miles. Only light on the dash is SRS, which is usually the belt buckle. The top is inop, and engine mounts need to be replaced. I think I can get it for $500, so I think I would be stupid to pass it up. Any idea on where to start troubleshooting the top?

I don’t have any experience with fixing the CV tops, but it could be a number of things. The best thing to do for that would be to find someone with a Tech 2. That can tell you what’s wrong with the top and where you need to go from there to fix it. Good luck! :)

At work they have a Snap-On Solis Edge, so I’ll use that. I had a BMW convertible and replaced the hydraulic pump, so I’ll try and sort it out. But other than that and the engine mount, it really only need a good detail. If I get it, I’ll send pictures.

I have a 2000 model in this exact car. I'm curious if they have sludging issues? My oil pressure light has been coming on about 3 weeks after I bought it for $2,000? It has 135,000 miles.

The early 9-5’s are known for sludge issues, but I haven’t really heard of this being an issue on early 9-3’s

Very similar to the one i have ~ mines 2002. My subs got me mine for £400 with 140k miles very tidy 2 lady owners previous ~ black interior.

But what if you buy a well maintained 10-20 year old saab on a budget with no experience fixing cars.Would it still be a good choice? (Btw over 3k a year on maintenance and repairs is considered over my budget).

I've made countless video's on this subject, just view the "saab stuff" playlist on my channel. If you plan on learning to work on it yourself, yes it will be. If you don't want to touch it yourself ever, you might have problems.

Yes, it does fold down you have to use the key to unlock it is on top of the head rest!

If it feels slow and there's no turbo lag then something on your motor needs repair ... probably the turbo actuator is sticking ...

Yes, these can be had cheap, but the cheaper you buy the more you'll pay... in repairs. The initial purchase price is negligible compared to the repairs over time. I've had three, starting with an 1982 900, 'cause I love 'em and can afford 'em.

A very long second gear? You floored the pedal, obviously, it will stay in lower gear for as long as it can, until you release the gas. Try accelerating normally and you'll see it changes gears like a normal car.

Well yes obviously. You misunderstood me. I'm saying that second gear is long, meaning the cars speed when it shifts into third is much higher than similar cars

I actually have to put the radio on 65% before I can hear it, though I keep both front windows down and vent windows popped when I'm driving local. Out of town, I only pop my vent window and keep both doors locked. I'm untrustworthy toward society.

No turbo lag? I have a '99 convertible and the car has very noticable turbo lag, especially at around 3k RPM when the boost really kicks in. However, I don't think a Saab with an automatic transmission can due the car any justice anyways :D

Agreed, whe you go into second and floor it, you dont feel the turbo kick in until about 2500-3000RPM, but when it kicks in, you better hold the steering wheel tight :-)
