I have the same Savage 650 1998 since 2002... 185 thousand kilometers through Brazil and the south of South America. Simple, basic and amazing motorcycle.
Congrats on the bike! 33 years ago the LS650 was my first motorcycle. I sold it, bought a second one years later. Sold that one too and bought a third one years later. The Savage is a great beginner bike, and larger riders fit on it. I'm 6'240 and I fit fine. But I don't advise going more than a few miles from home on it. I had 4 flats in less than a year, and since it has tube type tires, every one required a tow truck. I spent more on towing than I did for the bike. Get a bike with tubeless tires if you actually want to go somewhere.
