Anytime you build rather than buy it is so much more personal. The touches and parts and how it's assembled. Every time you start it you can hear that it's happy or not. I'm transforming an 06 into something just for me. Great video. It's nice to witness people using their brain and hands and not their wallet.
@@Davido50 When I get done restoring my 2001 it will be showroom quality as EVERYTHING on it is brand spanking new. Guess you could say that I bought and built mine lol😂.
Hey great to see a fellow Ontarian in my comments! Haha. Thank you. It was definitely a project. But worth it in the end. Unfortunately it’s easier and cheaper for people to buy new than fix something.
Great job! As a kid, back in the early 2000’s I was mesmerized by my older cousin’s 2001 Raptor 660R and thought it was the baddest thing on the planet. At the time I had a 2001 Beartracker 250 and the 660 was such an intimidating, mysterious beast. Many years, bikes, and my own raptor 700 have come and gone, but that 660 will always be the thing of legends to me. The 2000’s were such an exciting time to be in enthusiast of ATV’s.
You and me both man. When these first came out I was 17 and you’re right - they were intimidating......then my younger brother bought the one in the video in 05.....and it was frighteningly fast haha. That’s also part of the reason why I restored it - sentimental reasons.
i agree 100% with you both , I was in high school from 2003-2006 , I remember seeing the 660 when it first came out , and i had bought the Suzuki Z 400 quad first month when it came out . Early 2000s and mid were interesting times for atvs / 2 stroke dirt bikes .
@@Davido50 they are still cool but I moved on to dirt bikes years ago and haven’t really looked back except for nostalgic purposes. Definitely hard to say how much longer they will be available though.
Thanks man. It was a learning process for sure. I had the basics from working on cars for 20 years, but this was a little different especially dealing with the carbs. I got them really dialled in though.
@@gordonwbell you tell me. How did it hold up? I’ve worked on a bunch of machine and car where people used torches and it just lit a fire under the oxidation. I suppose yours were pretty cashed so what does it matter. Not really much other option.
@@novarocker247 they held up for the most part pretty good….however during the learning process I did add too much heat to some small areas that ended up softening and deforming. The plastics could use a thorough clean and buff again though, as it’s been two years.
Wow man great video! Thanks for sharing. We’d love to see an update of course. I have an 01, 03, & 05 in my shop all torn apart at the moment and will soon be building a Frankenstein 660 probably on the 03 frame with all the best parts from each bike. Your video has inspired me to get on this project and hopefully be riding the Florence dunes this summer!
I wish I had ur Capability to just fix stuff on the fly, every time I try I just screw shit up, you should feel blessed my Friend, those skills are hard to come by, Great work bike looks Awesome!!!!!
My "budget build" on the 660 went the same way. Needed to replace the base gasket...that turned into just about a frame up rebuild. If I ever find time I'll get a video up of the progress. Should be done soon. What trailtech mount is that? I have been looking for something like that to mount mine with.
Isn’t that the way.....haha. I only had intentions of getting the engine running, but once I started digging into and saw how beat up it was, I had to go all the way. The trail tech mount is custom made using some aluminum angle. Pretty easy to do, then secured it to the steering stem with the handlebar bolts.
Thanks. Hard to put an exact number on it, but let’s put it this way - it was a lot more than buying a mint used 700. Haha. But I figure I got an education out of it, and saved another 660r from the scrap heap.
I was riding it earlier this year, but recently sold it. New guy is a gearhead too, so he’s going to a few things that I didn’t get to. The thing absolutely tears…..I ripped it pretty hard through the gears the day it was sold.
Thanks man! It’s been fun ripping it around. Are you referring to the small 1” black filter connected to 1/2” rubber hose? If so, that’s a K&N breather filter, that’s for the crankcase ventilation.
Hey man just curious on what the entire cost to rebuild the engine was? I think I have a ticking in mine and was thinking about just rebuilding the entire engine incase it’s about to blow! Any info would be awesome since I’m kinda knew to the quad scene!
Hey, the costs will be a lot different for each person. I live in Canada so parts are lot more expensive than the states due to currency conversion and duty fees from shipping them from the states. If it’s a ticking noise could be a simple fix like have the valves adjusted or the timing chain is stretched - both fairly inexpensive to do. I get a buddy who’s experienced in mechanics have a listen to it before spending any money. That all being said, I was $1000 for a running engine again without splitting the cases. I did the cylinder, piston, valves, timing chain, starter clutch, oil pump and rebuilt water pump. So the crank and gears were still good. Hope that helps man.
@@gordonwbell sweet thanks dude! I’m also in Canada! I’m a take it to the mechanic in town here hopefully soon and get him to have a listen. The guy I got it from said it always sounded the way it does but it makes me a lil nervous. Rather get it looked at and dealt with before something goes wrong. Also clean build dude good job!
Great video, I have a question, 2004 yamaha raptor 660 there's a hose that comes from top of engine and right below starter and when I start it, fuel comes out of that hose, do you know where that end hook at ? I hope you can help 🙏
Hey, I think I’m going to need more information of exactly what’s going on and where this hose comes from. At the moment it sounds like the fuel overflow from the carburetors…..but I want to be sure.
It sounds like your crank case vent.. is it like a ½inch in size? Or real small? If it's small then it maybe an over flow line from the carb.. .. if it has gas constantly coming from it. It say you have a stuck float..
I’m 46.5” with the rims and tires I was running with the spacers on the outside of the hub - (narrow configuration) for woods riding. So it would be 48.5 then at its widest setting.
@@gordonwbell hmm. I'm asking because I measured mine and it's at 48". I bought it used and looks to have a extended axle. But I want to get to 50" in rear. And yours looks wider than mine 🤔
Hey, unfortunately I would not. It’s better to buy a nearly or fully complete but blown up, ratted out, clapped out bike, that the frame isn’t damaged or been modified. I say this because, even though you might end up replacing a lot of things, it’s better to have all the pieces that are hard to find and work from that. You can buy intact and good condition bottom end of the engines and then build that up, if you want - but to do that, it needs to be a rolling chassis, meaning it has the wiring harness, CDI, wheels, plastics, seat, suspension etc. I hope this helps.
@@gordonwbell I have a frame, gas tank, gas tank rubber , seat sterring wheel stick. I just wanted to know if it would be worth it to start it with the parts I have. You think or its time to sell it and just not build it.
Ya that’s normal. Mine is not. Someone had wired mine to be on all them time. There is a thermostat switch in the bottom of the radiator that switches on the fan. Your fan should come on around 208F or 98C. I thought of returning mine to stock but I someone cut the plug off the wiring harness.
Dumped out the old gas, put fresh gas in it, swished it around a lot, then let it sit for a week, swished it around again and then drained that gas. Took the petcock out and replaced it as the screens were completely rotted away but they usually can be cleaned. You will need a big JIS bit to break the petcock screws free though.
About $1700 CDN. New bored Yamaha Cylinder, new wiseco piston, gaskets, new timing chain, new valves, used valve springs, new cylinder head bolts, one way starter clutch, oil pump, oil supply line, gas tank petcock, carburetor rebuild kit and bigger jets, bolt repair heli-coil kits, etc.
Yo bro you got an ig? I would love to be able to talk to you about this bike and what it has to offer, I would appreciate any input you may have with it. Please and thank you. Im taking about mines and it being a worthy project
