For more information about O2 sensor and fuel trim diagnostics, refer to Sections 4 and 5 in my eBook available at www.scannerdanner.com.
Link to the Hyundai case study I mentioned in this video • P0133 O2 Slow Response...
In this video I cover the following:
loop status (open loop, closed loop and open loop faults)
How to test an O2 sensor for response
Is the O2 sensor lying?
Rich and lean air fuel ratios
Short term and long term fuel trim
For more information on this topic, I have written a “field manual” called Engine Performance Diagnostics which is available at www.scannerdanner.com as an eBook or paper book.

Hi Paul, I've been following you for a while, I have your ebook and a premium channel subscription. You changed my life man. I have a couple of questions about this video. At the 16:29 mark I understand that the right side graphs are the downstream sensors and that the cat on bank 2 (top right) is better than the cat on bank 1 (bottom right). But the bottom right graph PID says O2S12. Is this the name for an upstream sensor for bank 2? If so, could it be that the O2S12 is a cold or bad upstream sensor? And the top left graph O2S21 PID is bad cat on bank 1? Thank you for your amazing lessons.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 7 лет назад
O2S11 = bank 1 sensor 1 (upstream) O2S12 - bank 1 sensor 2 (downstream) O2S21 = bank 2 sensor 1 (upstream) O2S22 = bank 2 sensor 2 (downstream) Thanks so much for your continued support! And for your kind words. To hear things like "you changed my life man" is absolutely amazing. I am so thankful when you guys share this type of stuff with me. It makes it all worth it.

I had this happen to a buddy's Nissan Frontier. He purchased it from a DIYer after it suffered T-belt failure. He redid the entire top end this drove us crazy for a bit, until we figured it out. On the Frontier it was a bit more obvious the connectors were swapped because they both live right next to each other, and go secured on top of the valve cover. Swapped then, and truck ran like a dream. This is why I like to use a marker, and run a line across similar connectors at different points. When assembly time comes, you can distinguish whether the two connectors belong together or not.

Absolutely wonderful video. I've got a 2004 3.5 GDI isuzu rodeo with a pretty unknown history. Starts up and idles great. When cold, it'll increase RPM to max ~4000 with some misfiring. Once warm, it wants to stall if any throttle is applied. It'll increase RPM only with WOT but very rough, barely fires- idles mostly fine with a bit of a stumble. Only code is stating high circuit on MAF, previous owner states MAF was just barely replaced to try and resolve this issue. Will chase for bad grounding- maybe pop the ECU open and tear apart the harness to check for bad wiring and traces.

When I got my 2002 Isuzu rodeo sport it had a lot of obscure electrical issues different things would happen stuff would turn on and off I regrounded all the grounds 4 or 5 grounds there were a lot it fixed electrical issues I also found a speed sensor on the left side of the transmission wires were broken re wired it and no more high idle shifts at about 3200 rpms also EGr valve get stuck and behind the throttle body there is a EGr aka nox tube mine had the tiniest hole through it it a pain in the butt to clean the tube but with a drill and a piece of breaded steel wire you can fray the end as to act like a brush or a gun cleaning brass 30cal will work also if you remove the EGr valve there is a hole that leads into the intake manifold tube u can spray carb or break cleaner in it and blow it out with and air compressor

I may have misspoken, but I have seen a jumped belt cause positive trim numbers on a 4 cylinder. I do not know if I have seen one go rich on a separate bank. I suppose it is possible on a dohc v type engine.

@sivucit 11 лет назад
Yes Paul. My id in youtube got changed to my full name from sivucit. I bought lot of vidoes, books and bothered you a lot at many occasions. I specifically asked this question being one bank going rich and other bank be low when i bought a video from you. you gave me the answer but only today i got the insight.. Thanks much.. I think you are gifted to explain most difficult part as a very simple one. Trust me, this is a difficult subject to explain.(atleast to me)
@LynxStarAuto

With cost savings the way they are today, most manufacturers use the same connectors for multiple sensors. Isuzu is definitely not the only one. Most vehicles I have seen share identical O2 sensor connectors. The only difference being if they are upstream or downstream. In defense though, if you look closely, that harness had a mounting ring where it was bolted somewhere, at some point. This falls more on sloppy tear down/rebuild, than identical connectors.

At 16:33 Paul mentions briefly while looking at the rear O2s that bank 2 has a better working cat than bank 1, but from what I can tell bank 2 is running leaner, shouldn’t the voltage be near .700-.800 on a rear O2 that has a good working cat? Any help would be appreciated.
@sailorbob74133
@sailorbob74133 6 лет назад
Great vid! You mention in the video that you've seen this reversed fuel trims problem also caused by timing issues. I've got this exact problem, although less severe, and I've already verified the O2s are correctly connected. Do you have a video showing this problem when it's caused by timing?
@camshaftcarb
@camshaftcarb 11 лет назад
He spoke the truth. Any bank to bank imbalance of airflow on a V-type engine can cause opposing fuel trims. If the cam timing is off, one bank doesn't open the intake valves soon enough and doesn't consume all of the available air. This air can go to the other bank causing your imbalance. You could see similar issues with one side of the exhaust restricted, one side of the engine worn out, and so on.

Hey ScannerDanner thanks for your vid! What does it mean if you've only got 1 O2 sensor but your bank 2 fuel trim sits around 25% and then jumps around 30-40%? This is for a Ford inline 6 engine.

@luisgeras72
@luisgeras72 11 лет назад
not so sure about that but in this case it didn't, the owner had installed te HO2 himself and obviusly the MIL came on again, so when I checked it in the shop the last thing I suspected (before connecting the scan tool) was the HO2 because it look new. By the way, scan data was fix at 3.27 v which make me think that this car was a cal. emiss. so we had to call the dealer to confirm cause there was not emission label under the hood.

Paul, on a side note (per my previous comment), if this vehicle uses dual cat-converters, I would bet the one on the over-rich running bank is trash now based on the on the OBD scope wave-forms shown. Let us know... Thanks,, Tom D.

could the rich condition ''where fuel was being dumped constantly inn the wrong bank'' cause o2 damage? from contamination of fuel saturation over long periods of time?
@spelunkerd
@spelunkerd 7 лет назад
At 18:00, after the fix, there is still a major difference between the two downstream O2 sensors, downstream bank 2 is rich, bank 1 lean. Why? Is it because the cat on bank 2 was flooded with fuel for so long that there is residual fuel still dripping through the cat, overwhelming the cat? Would that be expected to clear over the coming days as the residual fuel is blown away? Or is it evidence the cat has had permanent damage because of the persistent rich condition on that side?

It's been a while man. Maybe what you saw was the result of me not clearing the fuel trim memory?

Hi Paul i just wanted to say, that we in the uk, say when a 4 cylinder car is running on 3 cylinders, we don't call it a miss fire, we call it a dead cylinder, we call a misfire when it runs on it sometimes and not others, just kind of missing on that cylinder...if its totally dead we don't say it has a misfire...don't think i am criterising because I'm not...Fred in England.

I am wondering if anyone reading this might be able to help me. I purchased a 2002 isuzu rodeo that had an engine swap with a honda passport. The people who swapped the motor got everything hooked up but the o2 sensors because they had different connector on the ends. They used the engine harness wires from the Honda thinking they would just plug up to the isuzu but when they made it to the o2 sensors they realized they did not fit. My question is...can I just swap out the 02 sensors to the ones with the correct mounts that match (honda) or will I have to replace the entire engine wiring harness? Also, is there a way to identify what o2 connectors go to what sensors? When I got the vehicle all the wires were just dangling from the transmission. Anyone know of an online wiring diagram in the event I can keep the existing wiring harness so I know how to connect what wires to what o2 sensor? Thanks for all your help
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 8 лет назад
+Aaron Werner Yes you can (get honda O2 sensors) As far as wiring goes, there is a DIY version of the program I use called Mitchell1 DIY. Look it up. It's about $15 to purchase a three day pass for your car. Then you can print up the diagrams you need.
@AaronWerner
@AaronWerner 8 лет назад
Thank you for your video and all the help I had another question. If the o2 sensors were not connected with a cause the motor to run at about half the power and just not run very well another mechanic suggested that the timing may have been off when they returned it and I'm just trying to determine if its the timing or if its the o2 sensors
@AaronWerner
@AaronWerner 8 лет назад
+ScannerDanner So, in your video this isuzu was misfiring etc...with the crossed o2sensor wired. If I had no o2 sensors hooked up would the engine run in a similar manner. I am working on an isuzu rodeo that I purchased with a swapped engine and the o2 sensors are not hooked up (have to order the sensors with correct connectors). They also timed the engine before they swapped it...could it also be the timing?

Hi Paul; Another great video.... Got to love other people's repair attemps ending up as a "rats" nest in your back yard (LOL). It seems a little weird that Isuzo engineering would have made such a real BASIC mistake in that the bank-1/bank-2 wiring harness connectors were not UNIQUE and could be interchanged??? After running this engine post-FIX, I wonder if there was any long term engine damage done (totally whacked out fuel mixtures--bank.1 & bank.2) Tom D.
