For the longest time I couldn't figure out how Kansas lost that year to Maryland. But in hindsight, Maryland had a loaded frontcourt and they had a more experienced team. KU had 3 Freshman getting serious minutes with a frosh starting at point. But I also think they looked less crisp as a unit starting with this game and leading into the game against Oregon and finally in the semi-final against the Terps. Still hands down, my favorite KU squad of all time
Kansas missed a combined 36 Free Throws in 2001 Sweet16 game vs Illinois + 2003 National Title game vs Syracuse. SMH...... Majority was Nick Collison. Which is too bad cuz we aren't in B2B Final Fours w/o Nick......
Yes, in the 2003 Natty vs Syracuse, KU went 12-30 from the free throw line. We missed 18 free throws and lost by just 3 points. If we had even gone a still horrible 50% from the line (15-30), the game would’ve gone to OT.
@@wiltchamberlainisthegoat13 Shit...if we shot just 50%? I think we win in Regulation by 5-7pts. Cuz alot those missed Free Throws were during Momemtum times for KU 2ndHalf
@@jasonpeters9716 I agree with you about Nick Collison being on KU’s all-time starting 5….and also about us winning by 5-7 in regulation. Plus, I’m pretty sure at least a few of those 18 missed free throws were missed on the front end of a 1 and 1. In that case, it’s really like you missed 2 free throws instead of 1. So those 18 missed potential points might really be like 22 or 23 missed points from the line.
@@jasonpeters9716 This is a little off topic, but did you know that Raef LaFrentz finished his KU career just 1 rebound short of Danny Manning’s KU record. Raef’s final KU game was versus 9 seed Rhode Island in the NCAA 2nd Round. We were the No. 1 seed in 1998. If KU had beaten Rhode Island like we should have, then Raef would have definitely finished as KU’s No. 1 rebounder. Perhaps it was fate that Danny Manning was supposed to retain that record. I’m sure Danny would gladly have parted with the record if KU had ended up winning it all.
