There are tons of "catch can" install videos out there on RU-vid. This is not a difficult job but hopefully I can add something to the discussion. First off, if your trying to solve the problem of continually needing to top up the oil level, a catch can is not your answer. If your oil level was dropping before due to oil leaving via the PCV/valve cover vent system then it will continue to do so. A catch can only serves to prevent that oil from entering back into the intake system and being burnt by the engine. There are two vents (one from each valve cover - through PCV on passenger side valve cover and through aft vent below throttle body on drivers side). I found that there was zero oil in the vent that exits out the drivers side valve cover and there was zero oil in the intake tube where that vent feeds back into the intake air system. For this reason I did not modify this vent. I focused only on the PCV vent that is on the passenger side valve cover.

I went ahead and found a baffled oil catch can that has two inlets and one outlet. So it has 3 adapters on it. I installed a pcv delete and have that going to one inlet. Then have the driver's side valve cover outlet going to an inlet to the OCC. Then put a small breather filter on the outlet of the OCC. So the system is now being vented to atmosphere through the OCC. It's not a closed system, since it's being vented. The baffles in the OCC should prevent any excessive oil vapors from being spewed in the engine bay. I plugged the inlet to the intake tube as well as the one that goes to the lower plenum. I was worked that I might have excessive pressure in the crankcase at first. But I'm not running any forced induction so I should be fine. There really isnt too much pressure in the crankcase anyways. I didn't really have too much oil residue in the first place. I'm pretty positive that it was 16yrs of buildup and considering that it was in fair condition. When I looked down into the intake manifold, the valves looked to be in good condition as well. I installed new valve covers and the old ones were gunked up where the pcv valve was. I changed the spark plugs as well and only had one that had small traces of oil on the threads. The spark plug seals were pretty worn though. The plugs were pretty worn and I had 3 coil packs completely fall apart when I took them out. I did have one connector crack on me that went to a fuel injector. I went ahead and super glued it back together. It connected back on fine, so hopefully I won't have any issues. I'm waiting for the rtv to cure on the valve covers and the plenum spacer I also installed too. Only thing I'm a little concerned about is the intake manifold gasket. It's odd because I don't recall ever taking off the two outside bolts that bolt the lower plenum to the upper intake manifold. It the lower plenum diagram they are bolts 7&8. I had the 6 middle bolts and the gasket didn't block their access to the holes onto the intake manifold. But for some reason the gasket blocks the holes for the two outside bolts. I know for a fact if I removed those bolts they would of been with the 6 middle ones. So it's been bothering me because I can't recall weather I removed them or not. I'm inclined to think that they were never there In the first place. Hopefully I won't have any issues with a leak. Keeping my fingers crossed, I torqued everything down pretty good. I also used thread lock and rtv on the manifold gasket. Guess I'll find out tomorrow once the rtv cures and I can finally start up my car.

Good luck, it's been awhile but if I remember correctly those bolts should be there.

My car is throwing oil into the plenum through the PCV and the Deiver side Valve Cover as well. Any advice on a catchcan for the two lines? My TB man, was dirty of oil residue and the interior was a little bit worst than yours.
@JRsGarage
@JRsGarage 4 года назад
Get a catch can with a baffle that should keep most of the oil from exiting the catch can. They are all pretty much similar. There are tons available on eBay or Amazon.

I’ve heard on the forums a vented catch can is the way to go. What oil catch can are you running?
@JRsGarage
@JRsGarage 5 лет назад
The one I use is linked in the description. It is not vented to the atmosphere. It collects about 3 oz of oil every 4k miles. Very little goes into the plenum.

JR's Garage It bolts right up? Or do you need the pvc adapter thingy lol?
@JRsGarage
@JRsGarage 5 лет назад
I don't know what adapter you are talking about. The OCC connects to the PCV via a hose and hose clamps and then from the OCC out to the plenum in via a hose and hose clamps.

How was this video good? What did you clean the plenum with? (Liquid) did you use a cleaner. You just showed you cleaned it. How with what?
@JRsGarage

At 3:20 I talk about using a SOS pad (found in the kitchen cleaning supply isle of any grocery store) to clean the plenum.

Good video ! got a question Got a 2001 Nissan skyline VQ (g35) and I having issues with EGR I am planning to remove the cover to clean that up How difficult was it and what are the torque specs ? Help is appreciated Thank you
@JRsGarage
@JRsGarage 5 лет назад
I'm not sure what part you want the torque specs for - the intake plenum? In the US the first year for the G35 is 2003 and to my knowledge there is no EGR.

Great video. I got a question when putting the plenum back on (upper gasket) do i need to add permatex to the gasket? Thanks
@JRsGarage

No, the plenum does not get any permatex.

Will you recommend plugging the plenimum tube and the air intake and running a hose from the pvc to catch can and the driver side hose to the catch can too?
@JRsGarage
@JRsGarage 6 лет назад
I have left the drivers side valve cover vent (at the back) vented to atmosphere. The PCV outlet goes into my catch can and then the outlet of the catch can goes to the stock plenum input. I probably get a little bit of oil into the plenum this way but most of it is trapped by the catch can. I didn't route both valve cover outlets into a single catch can because I didn't want the PCV outlet side to feed back into the drivers side valve cover. Not sure that this would cause any problems but just didn't see the need as I do not have any oil coming from my drivers side valve cover.
@josevelarde4113
@josevelarde4113 6 лет назад
JR's Garage so I prob do it the simple way and not bother to touch the air intake hose or non of that and what you think about the vented catch can? Kinda have my eye on that right now
@JRsGarage
@JRsGarage 6 лет назад
I wouldn't do a vented catch can. You run the risk of getting an oily residue in your engine bay.
@josevelarde4113
@josevelarde4113 6 лет назад
JR's Garage I see so imma start looking for a closed (sealed) catch can and just do a set up like you did and leave the air intake alone

great video thank you. if there is oil inside the plenum will it exit the throttle body and going into the air intake tube? 2006 Infiniti M35 and there is like oil steam on the air filter
@JRsGarage
@JRsGarage 4 года назад
What you are talking about might be the PCV which will vent pressure back to the air intake. Oil in the plenum will make it's way into the cylinder and get burned up during combustion.
@monirobaid5809
@monirobaid5809 4 года назад
@@JRsGarage cool, thanks for the reply and yes I'm suspecting on the pcv valve and i'm gonna check it, I just wanted to be sure where the oil comes from to the air filter if it's coming from the throttle body or from the breather hose so I can do the cleaning . I haven't even removed anything yet all I did I was checking the air filter the other day and found it oily
@JRsGarage
@JRsGarage 4 года назад
They must have changed something between 2003 and 2006 because my 3.5 does not have an inlet prior to the air filter. Mine has one between the air filter and the throttle body ... A tube that came off the driver's side valve cover.
@monirobaid5809
@monirobaid5809 4 года назад
@@JRsGarage they are same setup the pcv valve on the passenger side valve cover with a hose goes to the intake manifold, a hose connected to both valve covers and a breather hose from the driver side valve cover to the air intake hose about 3 to 5 inches from the throttle body so I've checked the pcv valve and found it works as it should but there is some evidence of oil vapor on the pcv valve and the breather hose so there is no solve in this case unless I install 2 catch cans 1 on the pcv and 1 on the breather hose.
@JRsGarage
@JRsGarage 4 года назад
I do not get any oil in the vent tubes from my driver's side valve cover so that is why I only installed the one catch can.

Helpful video Question do air is sucked in from the six upper screws on the plenum?
@dorianhernandez8471
@dorianhernandez8471 3 года назад
Is that normal?
@JRsGarage
@JRsGarage 3 года назад
No the two halves of the plenum mate up with a really flat surface so no air should get through.

Just to let you know you have this set up incorrectly, if you look on the OCC you will note an "out" and an "in" marked on it, the in should be for the line that will be drawing oil in, the out should go to the air intake, this way may still catch some/all of the oil, but I think there is something with the design of the baffle and a reason why those sides are specifically in vs out.
@JRsGarage
@JRsGarage 5 лет назад
Yea, I know. I swapped it around a few months back. I didn't re-shoot the video because I found that there was so little baffling in this catch can, it made no difference to the amount of oil collected which way around the input/output were connected. Thanks for the correction.

How's the oil consumption with the new catch can?
@JRsGarage
@JRsGarage 6 лет назад
I don't plan on opening up the plenum ever again so I can't be certain that it has caught all of the oil. I do know since I installed it there is about a mm of oil in the can. My engine never lost much oil between oil changes anyway. If your engine loses oil through the pcv system the catch can will not prevent that, but it will end up in the can vs being burnt by the engine.

You can just vent the PCV with a filter.
@JRsGarage
@JRsGarage 6 лет назад
Correct, you can but after a short while the filter will need to be changed. After only 2 months my catch can had about a mm of oil sludge.
@SwishaSilva

I’d just vent the driver side, and then run a catch can on the passenger side. Typically on these motors it’s the passenger side that gives headaches with oil burning
