who else came here strictly for the 2t? idc wat the lap times were that sounded the best **edit** as it turned out the old smoker was the fastest bike and the best rating he gave. plus as a coach, you almost want to see people learn how to ride on a 2 stroke. if you can ride a 125 well, you can ride any bike. you learn so much technique and skill on a 125
These are probably my fave videos you are getting into doing... my suggestion what I would like to see.. walk around each bike give a quick run down of the mods.. do the lap give score immediately after, and talk about why... then at the end give of the vid talk about comparison for all 3 etc.. P.S there needs to be a 2 stroke in every vid
Its the steel frame that makes all the difference, if you have your suspension set up correctly and you are a good enough rider you will be able to feel the frame flex under you. And its a 2stroke.
There is no doubt that the 2 strokes are MUCH funner to ride...and will always be REAL motocross. Back in the day...in ancient times, when I was little, I began to ride, I started on a 4 stroke Honda XR100R. So one day I met up with one of my best friends from school friends, Jeff, at a cool riding place we had. Jeff had a new Honda CR80 2 stroke. I got on it and rode it, and I was like, WTF!? It blew me away! indescribable fun.... .there was no turning back. IMO motocross made a terrible mistake going to 4 strokes, it is a completely different sport now, and by different I mean worse. Like Hopper said, ..it's a dying sport now.
I have just finished my 1996 kx250 restore and I LOVE THIS BIKE...I think your videos are some of the best on You Tube for testing and training...But you ain't old my friend, I'm old! But you know, "You don't quit ridin because you get old, You get old because you quit ridin..."
Me before the video: “He’s gonna pick the 2 stroke again isnt he?” AJ in the video: *picks the 2 stroke* I think you’re 3 for 3 when a 2 stroke makes an appearance man! #BigTwoStrokeGuy. As a dude on an old RM250 I love to see it 😂😂
I’m 43ish now had every four stroke as in 400/426/450” before that 2 stroke when a kid now I buying a brand new yz250 I love it think I’ll keep it for ever and I’m not even that good great video mate love this shit!
WAY 2 Go, AJ. I love watching your videos. As a certified NYS Driving Instructor I can tell you most Pro racers DON'T know HOW to teach. You are a great teacher. Did you ever take the Carlo Coen Motocross School when you were killing it in D34? Carlo is also a great teacher, explains the how and also the WHY. FYI, yungins', I knew AJ when he was barely off the PW50. As a reporter for Cycle News at the time his name came up often in the race results. Take that as a clue, if you have dreams of going Pro like AJ, you gotta be a winner in your local District first. Proud of you AJ Catanzaro, I'm watching for you on tv all the time. Braaaap
Your awesome AJ. Love these little comparisons. Mostly because, like me, you always pick the 2 stroke. I thought you were going to struggle on that kawi in that dried out powder. I raced that bike for several years and it was challenging to get hooked up on, but you looked good on it. Cheers!
AJ is so right about what is actually happening inside the modern bikes suspension. but power wise modern 250fs have closed the gap from older 2 strokes. Honda brake had to be not right usually really good
True, they also tire you out fast. Back in the day (1980’s). In Canada 🇨🇦 race 125, 250, 500 same day x2 40 minute motos. Ross Pederson, 40x Canadian National Champion rode all those classes, won all those championships. Ross finished couple AMA nationals in top 5 (stock modified bike), against, RJ, Glover, Bailey, Omara, Hannah, Ward, Lechien, Dymond.
I love the 4-strokes, having bought the 1999 YZ 400, then raced and rode a bunch of them over the years, also owned 2-strokes. It is telling that so many former racers, media guys, and even top team managers and legends like Roger DeCoster say that we really need to return to 2-strokes but the industry and manufacturers just ignore all that advice. Really sad that we don't really decide the future of our own sport.
Dang. So fun to watch that 2 stroke. Kinda wish when I switched in 2005 from a 2 stroke to 4 stroke, I added the 450 but instead of selling the 250 2t, I kept it. Usually what I have I like the best and being in Calif, the 4t makes sense for all around riding (track and trail), but something so exciting about the 2 strokes!!! Wish I had the space for both. I still feel like the 250 2 stroke competes with a 450 4 stroke, as does the ama as well as physics, but for some reason now days people see 250 and 250 and assume they compete. The new 250 4t are getting sooo much closer to the 2t but those are old tech so it’s not really apples to apples.
Love all of the two stroke bikes I’ve had. Been shopping around now for another bike, definitely going with older 2 stroke. I’ve not had a kx250 yet maybe i should try one. Yz250 has been my favorite so far.
It’s the seat. I’m old, I buy a Guts Racing tall soft seat and sand it down a half inch. Makes a newer bike shine, and holds you more like a bump seat.
was gonna come down sun & bring the 1990 cr250r ,its a blast at that track! was loaded & ready but sat night festivitys gave sun morn hangover told me dont!
Most recent bike is an 03' kx250, rebuilt from the wheels up myself. I figured because I'm getting old ie: 43yo, that a 450f would be a smoother power delivery, so been wanting one for a while. Problem is I worried about what I'll be getting myself into rebuilding one. It's hard to get away from the easy, low price rebuilds of a 2 stroke that I've been doing for a lifetime. Maybe the fuel injection alone would be worth it. 🤔
The 03 Kawi 2-stroke was definitely not jetted well as u could hear it off bottom burble and was weak (when they actually rip off bottom and normally sign off early, the 03).
Being a 40 year old raised on 2 smokers I agree. I just don't get why they don't let the 250cc smokers go head to head with the 250 4 strokes!!! That is the fair fight and truly think the @ strokes would win...
The 2-stroke 250 should more be compared to a 450 4-stroke. Don’t know how you divide bikes / classes in the US but in Sweden where I live and races endoro the classes are as follows. Enduro 0 (E0): 49 cc to 85 cc 2-stroke and 75 cc to 150 cc 4-stroke. Enduro 1 (E1): 100 cc to 144 cc 2-stroke and 175 cc to 250 cc 4-stroke. Enduro 2 (E2): 175 cc to 250 cc 2-stroke and 290 cc to 450 cc 4-stoke. Enduro 3 (E3): 290 cc to 500 cc 2-stroke and 475 cc to 650 cc 4-stroke. Enduro El (EE1): Electric Think motocross is similar…
U can race them in my country, a 250f is easier to ride but they pump out like 42-44 hp max and a 250 2 stroke like an rm would do 45-48 but harder to ride and a sx250 could do like 55 LOL so it is a major difference
Initial differences are typically the biggest issues and will fix the largest chunk of the problem of the overall unit. Very important info off the top of a pros head. It's like bringing someone new but experienced into a workplace, they'll notice the biggest issues first typically. Everyone else was over looking it, on purpose or not, but a pro can pin point the main flaws fairly quickly. Valueable info these are cool vids.
Maybe the later models, I regularly rode a mate's '91 kx250 and it was a light switch. Nothing to full power in 500rpm, I owned a '96 CR250 at the time. Wish I still had that...
@@craigdavies8099 haven't riden one that old. Had a 02 kx125 and my mate had a 04 kx250 and both had less top end and hit than their peers but where easier to ride
@@matthewrodbourn2857 I think the power valve was set to more bottom end power. I own a 04 KX250 myself and after setting it up for more top end and in comparison to our 02 CR250 and our 08 RM250 its an absolute beast
Im rebuilding an '03 KX250 I found in a junkyard, was pretty much junk. lot's of issues to work out but it's gonna be sweet when it's done. Will have just over 3K into it, grip it and rip it.
Flex, Flex, Flex..... Steel chassis..... Just finished a 1996 KX 250 full rebuild on every not and bolt for Unadilla. Hard to get used to the shifting and doesn't turn as good as my 21' Husky FC450 here's the but...... The more I ride it (3 time riding on Saturday since rebuild) the more I like the forgiveness of the suspension (shout out to Factory Connection) and the chassis. But Im way older and not in the same zip code as AJ so follow his opinion more than mine,🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I'm surprised you've never really rode honda sense the rocky hill days growing up in New England I've always seen the a guys switch bikes granted I know you were on team Green. Never got old watching you hit the 105 on the little old kx lol
Should put fod in the heading, you'll get more views from the most densely populated state per square mile in the whole country. Nice to hear what the hell our old bikes are supposed to sound like on our local, even if a little raspy.
So do you adjust suspension at all between bikes? Like if so would u explain suspension set up to riders? I idk if you do it, if you did I think it would cool to see all bikes at a base set up compared to how some people ride thier suspension set ups, feel as a lot of faster rides don’t have that knowledge into good suspension set ups. explain to those who don’t know how to properly adjust suspension cause I feel like it’s something that even faster riders may not know how to properly adjust suspension
2 strokes are just more fun. And surprisingly faster!!!! Whatever he did to that kx250 it looked great. I'm not a fan of that era kawi looks. UT that grey plastic looked sweet!
To be honest, half a second is going to fall within margin of error, especially when swapping from bike to bike like that. What it really tells me is that they are very competitive, which means the bike he felt most comfortable on would give him the most consistent results. So the 2 stroke still wins.
Yep! Half second could also be the fact that I was getting faster as I rode more laps But was extremely comfortable on the two stroke and ultimately that’s what matters when lap times are close
Thats It I'm calling it right now on here. I say we all petition to have AJ move down to the 250 class and whoop up on those young bucks!! Let SGB Babbitts know now AJ that your moving down and gonna win the title in doing so!! Lol
I just looked at a cr250 last weekend. But my heart is set on a kx250 at this point. Either way it’s one of those bikes. Wife is not impressed with this idea though.
