In a way the 2003 Nissan Sentra Front Calipers, Brake Hoses, & Complete Brake Service video is 'part 2'. The original video included the brake work on this Nissan as well, but it took a bit longer than I had planned and I needed to split them up.
That said, I think this is an excellent video about brake work. Not only does it cover pad replacement, but also caliper replacement, brake hose replacement, servicing brakes, removing stuck bleeders, bleeding brakes, and also machining rotors. So if you're looking for a video on how to do a brake job on an old rusty car, look no further.

I saw those bleeders breaking before you did. When I encounter one of those I loosen the hose to relieve pressure and heat around the bleeder with the acetylene torch. Works all the time! If you need to bleed a caliper with a broken or frozen bleeder it can be done through the hose but the caliper has to be removed from the bracket and inverted. If there is air in it it will rise and that's the only way to get it out. The banjo bolt must be at the highest point.

In situations like these, i always leave the bleed valve alone, put the caliper on the bench, take it apart, and heat it with a blowtorch, works like a charm.
@ericthecarguy
@ericthecarguy 8 лет назад
+TheRealDeal I imagine that would work. I just didnt' have time for that.
@plavins1

Well in Latvia people rarely actually replace calipers, when they seize or leak, replace the rubber bits, clean it out, slap it back to gather, replace the piston if that has rust pits. I usually heat up the copper washers with a blowtorch when i do not have new ones.

Great video, but here you can buy new pistons if you need to, new pistons and gaskets are not expensive, maybe 20-30 euro for your average car, like a focus, or golf.
@ericthecarguy
@ericthecarguy 8 лет назад
+TheRealDeal I'm aware of that, but as I said in the video it's not always feasible or practical. Remember, time is money, and the time you spend reconditioning a caliper could be better spent with other repairs. Calipers are actually cheap and you get all new hardware as well. This means the caliper is completely renewed. They also often come with limited warranties. In most cases it's more practical to just replace a caliper over attempting to rebuild it. Not saying that rebuilds can't be done, they're just not always practical. Thanks for your input.

Eric, you're getting stomped on by the comment trolls 😢. Maybe some people don't get that FiF repairs are done for free on some really ratty vehicles. I'm sure the people you're helping don't care a bit if you have to "think outside of the box" on some repairs. Would one of the most popular channels risk it all on some repair they didn't feel was proper? I don't think so. I've learned a ton of tips and tricks from you and find your video informative and entertaining. Thank you for your hard work.

A little advice on getting bleeders to free up. Get yourself a microtorch (you probably have one if I know you), and heat the caliper (not the bleeder itself) and that in combination with penetrating oil usually does the trick. At least for me. The microtorchs small flame makes it easy to get the heat right where you want it, without burning up seals. Apply penetrating oil, and then heat until it smokes and most times your good to go. Great videos Eric. Can't wait to see what you do with the Fairmont though

hey Eric, another thing you can do with those bleeders as a last ditch effort is a quick blast of high heat from a acetylene torch. just enough to heat the area around the bleeders. if it still won't come out, then it's time to replace.

As an aside, people who can't wait to have 3m silicone paste delivered to them should visit the nearest Napa or Advanced Auto Parts--and just buy the Sil-Glyde lubricant. It looks and smells identical to the 3m stuff. Moreover, they both turn into some white powdery stuff at very high temps :)

These are real Ohio brakes. Most every rusted brake issue I've had in one video. Nice job getting through it!. For one second I thought you were going to have to get a puller to get the rotors off. I've broken pullers and have had to cut rotors off hubs before to get rotors off. Bad days. Salt = sadface for brake repair.
@mikeyb4642
@mikeyb4642 8 лет назад
Quick tip: To knock rotors off, I take a block of wood and hit it with a hammer. I place the block on the braking surface so I have more leverage on the rotor. Works nice and smooth every time I've done it.

Eric. When you are losining the bleeder valve. Use a 6 edged rench insted of the 12 edged rench you are using now. When using a 6 edged rench you will get alot better grip and not round the bleeder valve.

I wish someone would send you a bleed screw removal tool to review. I've seen two that look good. One uses a wrench and pneumatic hammer to break it loose, the other kind basically hammers a steel rod in the center of the screw to reinforce it. With both tools you need new screws. I'd like to see you review something like those.

@ EricTheCarGuy for a 2003-2007 Honda Accord that recently had the front brakes & rotors replaced; There was a squealing noise (metal on metal) coming from the front driver side wheel while driving as if some metal type object was stuck by the rotor/brakes, then it went away & it had a faint but noticeable smell of burnt metal once parked. I took it to a Honda Dealership & of course when I took it there it wasn't replicating the issue, they checked it out & said they found nothing. It did it again & this time was was making a METAL GRINDING noise & was able to show them (Honda) when I took it there again, they re-diagnosed it & said there was a brake caliper BOLT on the upper inside that had come LOOSE because they did NOT TORQUE it all the way according to them, they also replaced the front driver's side BRAKE CALIPER & torqued the inner bolt they referenced to be tight/secured. After everything seems fine for a few months now & one day I heard a squealing noise (no metal grinding noise just squealing) while turning the car left momentarily then the sound went away & when I parked shortly thereafter there was no slight burning metal smell. Fast forward approximately two months after that & there is still no noise or any noticeable issues (Drove in the Colorado Mountain highways, etc.) Do you think everything will stay fine with this issue or is there any cause for concern from that very brief metal screetching sound that I heard a few months ago? If it happens again I'll take it in again to be checked out & if it does happen what could be the problem? (Not lubricated properly? If the 'Inner upper Caliper bolt is loose/needs to be Torqued again then what is that an indication of?). Any chance you could do a video demostration (and tag me) of this showing how that Upper-Inner Caliper brake bolt should be Torqued & if it's not torqued properly how it effects the metal grinding/noise and pointing out how the brakes/caliper/rotors should be properly lubricated in case some how they missed that step or didn't grease it properly. Any recommendations on a mechanic shop that you would recommend around DENVER, CO? Where are you located? Thank You

I have used Permatex Disc Brake Grease (green one) on my caliper pins before and last time I did brake service on mine I deeply regretted doing so. It said it was for use in caliper pins, but what it did was swollen rubber bushing and seized caliper pin. Got silicone grease and new bushing, cleaned caliper pin real good and works great now. :D BTW local part show charged me $11 for bushing and boot which I could have gotten for $4 on-line when I was ordering brake pads and rotors. I paint my calipers just so that I don't see rust. I just hate to see rust anywhere visible. I don't understand why pretty much all remanufactured calipers don't come with rust protection (paint or plating.) Factory calipers do come with some sort of plating to keep calipers from rusting, but remanufactured ones usually are bare metal and only have thin coat of grease. Centric advertises their caliper saying "all calipers are treated with an anti-corrosion finish" and when I replaced mine it rusted on first rain. Contacted Centric about that, and I was told they come with "water soluble" finish to keep it from rusting on the shelves. Centric does have zinc plated version, but only comes fully loaded with break pads (at least for my car).

No with messing with the brake pedal to stop fluid loss, Its always going to drain. Get a metric plug that is the same size as the flare nut and thread it on the line to stop the fluid from leaking out. I usually just cram a plug into it, sometimes the bleeder valve cap fits really good. Copper is not bad if it is a quality part. Loosen it and tighten it a few times and it will seal nice, Now, Aluminum crush washers are the ones i do not like You can paint the calipers red for that SER look lol
@hellcat1988
@hellcat1988 8 лет назад
It looked like the piston did move a little on the passenger side when you were clamping it with the pliers. That makes me think it was the inner liner of the rubber brake lines that had collapsed and caused that problem with the calipers as I've experienced the exact same problem on the 95 neon I'm working on in my videos. I didn't have to replace the calipers, just the rubber lines; though I didn't break off the bleeders.

PRO TIP: before replacing a seized caliper, try taking it off and smashing it on the ground. My dad taught me that trick and saved me some money! Really nasty black brake fluid came out, must have been the clog coming loose. Also don’t forget to lubricate the piston with silicone.

Those bleeders on cars with a lot of miles are often stubborn. A tip a mechanic once thought me was to hit the bleeder screw square on the head with a hammer before loosening. This sometimes works to break rusty threads and to avoid breaking the screw off. Sometimes it's inevitable though.

Dude, heat the bleeder screw up with a torch then pour some ice water on it......the sudden expansion/contraction of the metals breaks the rust and once you start doing this you will almost never break another bleeder screw. Surprised how you wind up replacing calipers just because you cannot get the bleeder screw broke loose......come on guy.....use the old school method.....IT WORKS!

Eric you should think about using respirator of some sort when grinding metal. Hex-Chrome is bad for your lungs.But with that said I love that you pay it forward like that. Great job.

I have always wondered, why is it so that most of the brakes, calipers & rotors are never painted to prevent rust?
@clutchthepearls3062
@clutchthepearls3062 8 лет назад
Calipers are almost always made of aluminum. They don't really corrode all that much. Of course iron rotors are a different story, but it's just not cost effective for companies to paint or coat them. Especially when the average person won't care either way. Besides, you could always just do it yourself before you install the parts. That way you'll get the color you want.

+clutchthepearls O_o Never seen aluminum calipers before. All the ones I have worked on in the past were cast iron. Is this someting new? I would hate to have to deal with aluminum threads at the bleeder valve or the breakline attach point as well...

+Deathlok67 Have you seen calipers made in the last 20 years? Then you've most likely seen aluminum calipers. There might be some new iron ones out there, but most are aluminum or steel. Pretty much any fixed caliper (not floating) is aluminum.

Great video. A couple questions. 1. Would a ratchet be a better tool for trying to break free a stuck bleeder valve? Maybe I'm wrong but it seems like a combination wrench would apply more 'sideways' force causing it to break most easily? 2. Ever put anti-seize on a bleeder valve when installing a new caliper since they so often get stuck? Keep up the good work.

I use a flare-nut wrench or a 6 point socket to minimize risk of rounding bleeder. I don’t use anti-seize b/c I worry it might contaminate the brake fluid.

On the last frozen bleeder I had, I used a stud remover socket - the head was stripped before I got to it

Just a question ETCG, wouldn't bleeding at the line risk getting air sucked back into the brake system, the same as it can through the bleed nipple? hence why you have your bottle with the clear tubing. Also wouldn't the correct fix be to drill it out and retap, then fit a new bleed nipple?

You need to do a tool review of brake bleeder removal tools like Phoenix or SUR&R sell.
