2003 S10 Fuel Pump Replacement. Doing a Fuel pump by yourself!

Nice job. Practical no frills approach. A couple things to note for other folks who watch this video. First, I agree that using a lift and straps on the lift points is better and easier AND safer than "a 2x4 on a jack" pushing up from the bottom! FWIW, I used straps and a lift, plus a jack as security after lifting. The load is not heavy, less than 125 lb., so even a robust ratchet strap could do the job. Personally, I would put the lift on the passenger side, to keep it out of the work space. I also use ramps under the wheels rather than jackstands, because I feel safer under a car on ramps than a car on jackstands...but that's no big deal. Another thing I would suggest is a bit more important - specifically that you thoroughly clean around the old pump housing and sealing surface before removing it. Otherwise, the dirt WILL fall down in the tank, possibly leading to premature failure of the new pump. Another thing I suggest is to disconnect the negative battery cable as "step 1". This will disarm the electrical system and avoid sparks which could cause an explosion when working with gasoline vapors. Finally, pay very close attention when you order the replacement fuel pump. Be aware that there are subtle differences between regular cab, crew cab, and 4WD version pumps. I believe the difference is due to differences in the fuel tanks between models. In addition, NOT ALL PUMPS ARE CREATED EQUAL. Study your parts options online carefully and choose wisely. There is a large online parts vendor we all know whose initials are R.A. who has a handy and complete comparison of the three levels of pump quality as well as the several distinct models of pumps available for each quality level. Great Video, Sort and to the Point. Your Idea of using a Engine Hoist worked well for me, I did not Have the side Bolts at the back of the Bed. I took all the bolts out that held the bed on and Hoisted the front of the bed up and cut two spare 2x4's to back up the Hoist. I worked out well. Thank you so much for the Video, it gave me the how to and the confidence to do it.

Middle nip on the old fuel pump broke off for me too - but the clips weren’t too bad to get off - I didn’t find many videos but thank you boss for showing me a little prelude to my project!

Omg, I would love to have clean bolts like that! In WI, we'd have to watch a video on drilling and tapping broken bolts first 🙂 Excellent vid...will use soon to change my 2002 Sonoma pump.

Just got doing mine. Yes I pulled the bed. Got pump in and cranked truck, No leaks ran perfectly fine gas gauge read empty because I ran it empty because I thought I was gonna pull tank until I found pulling bed was easier. So the gauge read empty, no big deal, got bed on, went to town and filled up to find out it doesn't read fuel level properly. Oh well no big deal takes 15 minutes to pull bed at least.

Good idea to remove the Negative battery cable when messing with the fuel tank and its components until ready for the test.

I like lifting the bed from the side not the front . Have done it both ways and there is definitely more room when its lifted sideways not from the front .

That's the only way to do it imo. You have to be a glutton for punishment to take the fuel tank out and do it. Can't believe people do it that way. That's pure torture. Hell, you can take the whole bed off easily.

Im replacing my plastic tank with a steel one from rock auto. It looks like the evap system is different. I should just be able to get the filler neck that matches the steel tank right? Seems like the only difference is the steel tank vents to the neck and not back to the charcoal canister. It still has the middle port on the pump that goes to the canister

How do you know the fuel pump is bad? My 2002 S10 is cranking fine but won't turn over, watching your video now thinking I may need to replace the pump..

Now try it on a 2000 from Minnesota. I guarantee that 2 or more out of the 6 or 8 bolts are gonna spin free and easy in that bed... even after weekly saturation with penetrant for the last two months. Then you are screwed. WTF... Is every RU-vid video about car repair done in California or the Sunny South? Otherwise, great video! I saw you did not remove/separate the spare tire dolly, ground strap or rear wiring harness for the lights. Must not be necessary if you tilt the bed?

Was that first shock missing a bolt?

Change your fuel filter while you’re down there. There is a good chance that its mucked up and part of the reason the pump went bad in the first place
