I've had practically the same issue on an old wideband O2 not long ago. Heater signal leaking into the measurement cell. Resistance between heater and measurement cell was something like 35k. Really enjoy your work, hopefully you're getting settled down again after the RU-vid premium saga.

Scanner Danner - you are an outstanding mechanic, and I can't think of anybody else that I would rather trust my car to. You're definitely on your way to heaven, helping so many people (directly and indirectly) with their car problems. But, with a mind like yours, you're in the wrong field. When I see you working outdoors on that Tahoe, under the car, on top of a piece of cardboard, I'm quite certain that you're earning a tiny fraction of what your fantastic brain is worth. If you had to do it all over again, what field of work would you have chosen? Take care, and I'm sure I can speak for many in thanking you for your service to society.

To be honest? In another life, a paramedic or doctor that handles trauma and needs a quick and accurate "diagnosis" would be very attractive. Why? I love helping people! But God's been good to me. I have an online tech training subscription service on my website where I'm teaching people how to troubleshoot electronic and electrical problems on cars and my "classroom" is now global! I have "students" in over 150 different countries now.
@Jay_Dahl

@@ScannerDanner I know a guy who owned his own machine stop, but he yearned to be a paramedic, and all the life-and-death action that comes with the job. For a couple years he volunteered with the local fire department, riding in ambulances to assist the ambulance crews. After a couple years the Fire Department hired him full time, and he sold his machine shop. True story. The most interesting thing he told me was that in some of these rural areas, when you call for an ambulance, the ambulance driver/paramedic does the whole job alone! I'm sure you would be most welcome in a town like that, with no training whatsoever.

That was interesting - like the sensor was shorted internally to the heater circuit. Never know what you'll see these days! Glad you've got the Premium Channel straightened out. What a nightmare that must've been! Thanks for all you do for us! God bless.

Sorry to hear that. I'm sure the majority of subscribers wouldn't mind if you had to increase the monthly fee to cover all of that. Your content is well worth it. Great Job Paul I was thinking the same thing it was looking like a duty cycle type signal which the heater uses which would make sense when first started o2 heater would have a higher demand then as it warms up it drops and so does your signal goes to reading lean. Dont think I've ever seen one fail this way. Very interesting
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 6 лет назад
I don't think this heater circuit was PWM but I'm not totally sure on that. That would match even better if it was right? I should have verified the sensor ground for you guys on this one, just to prove the O2 was the issue. I just couldn't get my fat ass under that truck :-) A new O2 did fix this. Unfortunately given how busy things were, I couldn't come back to do a follow up for you guys.
@robinsonsmotorcycleandauto3929
ScannerDanner If it is it would be on ground side as I know they have constant 12 volts to them as there's fuses in fuse box for them it's been awhile since I've had to test one surprisingly so couldn't say for sure either. In any case we appreciate any time that you give us so no worries on the update we know you have tons on your plate.

Thank Scanner Danner. My truck had those same 4 codes. But mine was a 2012 Silverado 5.3. But when I put the scanner I was getting the same readings for both upstream 02 sensors. Went to check the driver side and one of the wires was rubbing on my transaxle shaft and was missing a piece of wire. I spliced in a piece of wire and put the scanner back on. It was still basically having the same readings. Going up and down. It would go from 0.750 down to 0.090 and then 0.660 and then down to 0.400 and back to 0.100. Both upstream sensors were fluctuating the same way while the downstream were staying steady at 0.650 -0.800 or so. I took the truck for a long drive and the check engine light went out. I had 9 codes and now its showing only four. Even though it had nine codes they were basically only four but repeated twice and one was repeated 3 times. Hopefully that's the problem. I already ordered both upstream and will replace them when they arrive

Check to make sure your O2 heater circuit doesn't have a blown fuse. There may be specific fuses for it.

Almost looks like the 02 heater's duty cycle. Signal wire shorted to heater circuit? More voltage/ duty cycle on the start than reducing as the exhaust heats up.

Agree, but internal to the sensor is where the short was, nothing external was shorted or damaged.

Paul, a theory in the O2 frequency pulse: I was thrown by this on a Wideband signal that came out looking like a square wave. I worked out eventually that the signal was shorted to the heater ground and, because it's ground via a floating ground but was not being pulled down to body ground at the PWM heater frequency, it was producing a square wave instead of a flat line. New W'Band S1 O2 was the fix. Make sense?

Hi ScannerDanner, I have a 2000 Montana Van 3.4, driving just fine right up to 110000 miles....then P0131 and P0137 popped up together. I tried cleaning the MAF and knocking dust out of the air fliter (was pretty plugged) I do not know how long it will take for the codes to clear if that helped, but failing that, if the P0131 and P0137 come together what are your thoughts if it is not a dirty MAF sensor? thanks!

Arthur, thanks so much for your interest in SD Premium. The wiring diagrams I use come from an expensive program called ShopKey Pro, it is around $150+ per month for access to this and is not part of SD Premium. After checking live data it works fine, then all of a sudden both line graphs for bank 1 sensor 1 and the bank 1 sensor 2 both 0 out. Occasionally sensor 2 (post cat) will go up and down. Any chance you may be able to give some advice?
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 6 лет назад
Thank you! When those O2s flat line on you on the same bank, that is suggesting an actual lean condition. O2s are most likely fine. Was it misfiring during this period of time?
@offroaddiaries
@offroaddiaries 6 лет назад
ScannerDanner thanks for the quick reply. Scenario is this. Cold start. Idles fine. Idle for a few minutes then go to drive it and after it hits normal operating temp it starts to throw a p0300. Car starts to hesitate and runs rough with no power past 25% throttle. About to do a fuel pressure test.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 6 лет назад
very good approach. Just know that you do NOT have an O2 problem, you have a fuel delivery issue. If fuel pressure shows to be good, focus on the injectors next and maybe even the plugs and wires. A misfire, of any kind, (spark or fuel) will drive the O2 sensors lean (it is a false lean, unburned oxygen and fuel enters the exhaust)

Could that odd signal on o2 be from the heater circuit? Looks almost like an on/off signal
@ScannerDanner

Definitely. I just wish I knew if this was a PWM heater on this model. I thought no, initially because of its age. But it makes the most sense. Though most PWM heaters are not activated with just the key on and that O2 signal was at 1100mv at times with the key on.

Thanks for the fast reply. Well here is my real question. Since i graduated RTI i have been in shops that have had me more or less only doing streeing and suspension work. Do to that and a few other reasons i dont want to get into in public setting my basic electrical skills are more or less non existent. I am for the 1st time in my career at a shop that is pushing me to advance my skills and to take my ASE tests. Well i passed brakes and streeing and suspension. But failed a/c. Not b/c of lack of understanding a/c or how it works. But b/c half of the test was wiring diagrams that i dont know how to read well enough to understand. So i guess what im getting to is would you recommend buying a different text book for my basic electrical needs or does your book get into to that kind of stuff? (I did try and find my old one from school but dont know what happened to it.) I do plan on watching all of your videos and showing my boss them to. I also know i want your book but with money tight right know i need to get the book that will help me the Most with electrical right now. Thank you for any help you can offer.

Completely separate diagnosis for the TCC circuit and not our concern for the fuel trim, O2 and misfire codes.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 6 лет назад
And it was a TCC brake switch fault. Not a TCC fault itself. This is a signal that comes from the brake pedal switch and is used by the PCM (as one of many inputs) to unlock the TCC and disengage the cruise control.

Im getting a P0131 and P0151. And one day I got a P0131 02 circuit low voltage. Its a 05 GMC 5.3 so is it a bad ground? What could that be? And the check engine light only comes on when im slowly rolling on the gas in 3rd or 4th gear. So is it telling me its too lean or too rich when I lug it a bit on the throttle?
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 3 года назад
you need to do some voltage measurements directly at the O2 plugged in, while it is running. If you can get me the voltage numbers on all 4 wires and what the sensor side colors are, I can help answer that question. The sensor ground is a gray wire (most likely) btw

@@ScannerDanner Sorry im just now seeing your reply. I don't know how I missed it man im sorry. Im going to dig into it today and check them all. I'm not an expert but I think what is happening is I wrote a tune for the Air fule ratio to lean out to 12.5 at WOT but the data shows at WOT its just fat and happy at 14.6 at all times no matter what I do. So if im getting low voltage in a o2 sensors im guessing its telling the truck to stay rich when it should lean out. Hey, Paul, I see something here Why B1S2 is not working up/down like B2S2 Is something affecting both sensors in B1 O2s Upstream/downstream the B1S1 is lean and B1S2 stays at rich instead going up down thank you( minute 9:43)
@ScannerDanner

Because the cat is doing it's job on Bank 2. It shouldn't be swinging up and down like the upstream
@ScannerDanner

Sorry, I should have watched that part first. The cat WAS NOT doing it's job during those frames but I didn't really have it warmed up either.

How come the truck went from open loop, to closed loop, back to open loop, then back to closed loop? Shouldn't it stay in closed loop once the right temperature is reached? Or is it normal for it to bounce back and forth when it teeters on the threshold?
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 6 лет назад
Because when fuel trim maxes out, the system is recognizing a fault and will default to open loop. Or in other words, O2 sensor problems will cause this condition.

ScannerDanner Thanks for answering my question. I bought your ebook, and am still learning. On a side note, I was able to pop my wife's trunk open using the control side of a relay when she locked the car (windows open) and the keys were in a beach bag in the trunk. So a big thank you for teaching us RU-vid viewers things that can get us out of being stuck in a beach parking lot 👍👍.

@9:29 Check the wiring. I misolaced my multimeter. Thus, I rolled the duce on a new Denso® oxygen sensor. It was more dead than the ceby in this video: flat-lining at 185 mV. STFT +50. LTFT +25. Oh-I lost the $65.00 + 10% sales tax bet. New O2 is just as comatose. 1997 Chevrolet Express 1500 5.7L V8.

J Michael G. Any trouble codes stored? OL fault usually means the pcm detected some type of fault and is forcing open loop operation.
@ScannerDanner

exactly what Discretesignals said. You should have trouble codes with an OL fault. And DO NOT be in a rush to replace your oxygen sensors. Vacuum leaks, MAF sensor issues etc can cause OL faults too

That is possible and would require further diagnosis once the engine is warmed up and running properly. The reason I pointed it out was because it was on bank 2 and the o2 sensors on bank 2 seemed to be operating normally (bank 1 was the issue side with the failed upstream o2 sensor). I Just thought it might be something that was worth looking into to avoid a comeback with the check engine light on again

I’ve seen aftermarket drive belts (mainly the Goodyear gator back belts) cause this on a couple of cars. You can actually hear an intermittent snap and see a spark when it happens. Only way I was able to fix it was to install factory belts and that took care of it. Hope this helps!

Ok, so.. 2:45 EVAP is Venting in open loop. Trim learn is disabled? B1 ST trim is - numbers. Indicated OS on all but B1S2 as it just started warming up ~10deg. missing something?
@Discretesignals
@Discretesignals 6 лет назад
gbowne1 The evap vent valve is open, but the system has 0 % purge going on. Evap vent valve is normally open unless the pcm is performing an evap system leak test. The evap system is not purging.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 6 лет назад
Not sure what you are asking me. The vent solenoid is always venting unless an EVAP leak test is being performed. "Fuel Trim Learn" is a useless data PID. STFT on bank 1 is negative because the O2 signal during this period is biased high (more than 450mv) due to the heater circuit bleeding into the signal.
@gbowne1
@gbowne1 6 лет назад
ScannerDanner, I saw later that it went to enabled and closed loop. Useless PID or not. Does it normally bleed into the signal in this? Just trying to see if I got what I saw straight. Open with no purge? Ok. I just saw that the bank 1 STFT was 0. when the others werent. Didnt catch the bias V.

Anyone can help me. I have a cheap scanner and trying to fix my Pop Chevy 2005 Colorado. There is a P0446 and p1133. O2B1S1 is showing rich and O2B1S2 is also showing rich. Both O2 seems to respond well to throttle. LT is -14 which make sense to compensate. So my first thought is vacuumed leak or MAF. So I cleaned the MAF and it brought LT down to -2. O2 came down a little but still rich. Could the P0446 caused the lean condition? Trying not to be a part changer and since downstream O2 also showing rich. And respond 1:1 with up stream. I ruled out upstream O2 as the problem that triggered p1133 code. My guess is because it remain 95% on rich, that’s why it trigger p1133. What also trouble me is the downstream fluctuate up and down on rich side (wave sign). I was expecting down stream to be stead instead of having a sign wave like up stream. Still learning so please be kind.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner Год назад
What's the definition of the P0446? Most likely two separate issues
@MinhTran-tj4wq
@MinhTran-tj4wq Год назад
@@ScannerDanner thank you Paul. P0446 is a EVAP Control not switching. I have no other EVAP codes such as small leak or large leak. Without knowing which of the 3 component is bad I checked the EVAP Purge Solenoid first and find that is working correctly (I.e close without power and no leak and after engine warm up it opened) I then looked at your video on how to test EVAP Tank Pressure sensor and found that the sensor was reporting low voltage all the time even when the gas cap was off signifying high pressure which was not accurate. I did the wire integrity test based on your video (Thank goodness for that video, I would of testing the ground with the 5v reference and possibly fry something if I did not watch your video. After replacing the Fuel Pressor sensor, I was reading the correct value around 1.5v. I drove the car around a few time but the EVAP test hasn’t fully complete. However, normally the Component error code would pop up by now. I will update after the EVAP has completed it full test. You are my hero and I have learned so much in the past few from all your videos to help me narrowed down the issue. Finger cross. I’m trying not to be a part changer. My Dad send his love ❤️ because he was worried that he bought a useless old truck. I do have some bad knews for him. Looks like the old owner has been running this truck rich for a while and the CAT might be bad. Down stream o2 is not looking too good. Did not do a pressure test on his exhaust but I have a feeling it won’t be long until it needs that too. Your ST LT and O2, MAF videos really gave me an amazing understanding of how it works. I never worked on car before and thank goodness there are great teachers like you out here. I brought my Lexus out to a local mechanic and he replaced O2 last year only to have the same code come back in a few weeks. I took what I’ve learned from your checking trims and after I cleaned the MAF, hasn’t seen and codes for awhile now. Much appreciations.
