The Mercedes SL is one of those special cars for many reasons. The SL has a strong heritage and today, the car offers a hardtop convertible which is not very common. This 2004 SL500 also has a 5.0l naturally aspirated V8 engine which is also a gem amongst today's cars.

Great Review. So here in germany we take the rattling part off spray silicone spray on the plastic rubbing and put it back. Work's in all German cars. Also we replace that radio with a android system from 2020. And last lpg conversion because gasoline is very expensive here and the sl 500 engine goes well with the much cheaper lpg. Of course we drive faster on the autobahn so consumption is just more. Check a german car channel g performance he's hilarious 😂

Don't see anyone complaining you've been more than fair. Nav screen was very aged. Older R230's are known for squeaks. I'm only surprised at how impressive you found the handling of a base early SL500 as a LC500 owner.

Yea my friend handling was really great on this thing it's all relative but I think even with the new cars out people can appreciate the handling and ride in this. Yea the rattles will be the turn off lol

Love the R230. Everything about it is great. Only thing that makes me want an R231 is the availability of night vision. Unfortunately this one doesn’t have the best for options haha. Ventilated multicontour seats are the most notable thing it doesn’t have. It has two buttons for heated seats, I noticed you said they’re cooled but this isn’t. It would be fully perforated leather, not just inserts, and it would be the two arrow heated seat button on top, ventilated seat button on the bottom where the double arrow heated seat button is in this car. Also - you said it out loud re the navigation, it’s called COMAND haha 😄

Yea I later realized it was just heated seats lol no cooled seats but oh well I guess in a convertible heated seats are more important lol. Thanks again for watching!

I almost got this exact car with 30k miles from the original owner for 14k. Unfortunately, the ABC system went out, and it went in for repairs. I found a 350Z roadster with 30k miles for the same price and jumped on that. Love this car and the hardtop. But the 350Z will be on the road a lot longer than this car.

Question I’ve noticed many of these high end cars always have a clean engine. Do you steam clean? Most cars under the hood look filthy. That would turn me away from buying.

Warranty on the suspensions is most expensive. You really don't have any other problem, except normal wear and tear.. there are many as cells out there which look new even 16 years old.

brother need a winter beater ! i want u to think seriously and give me a few propositions we probably think of the same stuff anyways -10k max or under -quiet and comfy over bumps thats my priority -looks better than a 2002 ls430 (not hard to beat lol) -luxurious yet decently reliable whatever that means and overall a well built value packed car

if you buy one of these cars expect the problems even though they look brand-new they aren't! Ithe build quality except is still excellent,it's like there's 17 to 20 years old! most cars wind up in the trash heap just relax and you will buy this car and love it

Cars are pretty decent, but are prone to have issues with the suspension. I would recommend the car, but be prepared to spend some dollars in maintenance.

@@ben_gurin I had one for 14 years it was a 2005 silver color same like this one. Some improvements had been made for the 2005 compare to 2003 and 2004. It's a reliable car for the most (motor, transmission, electronics) except for the shocks and the oil pump for the suspension system. Those are extremely costly. I really love that car fun and confortable but was for the most time afraid that something broke with this complex system of suspension. Shocks cost around 2000$ each and the oil pump for this suspension system cost around 3500$ plus the labor time. I will not recommend buying one be prepare to spend a lot of money and waist time at the Mercedes dealer plus that it's not all the mechanics that understand and knows that car even at the dealership. Parts are only available from Germany those car were made in Stuttgart. So once it broke the car will be park for many days at the dealer before the parts arrive. Even if you have a extra warranty it won't be repair very fast. (if parts are still available)

The Lexus SC430 is more opulent and reliable than this..but I will choose the Old SL bcos Rag Tops are more useful than Hard top convertibles...Jaguar XK...Aston Martin and other Benz models

They are not money pits, that v8 is one of the most reliable German v8s of all time. Also, this car doesn’t have all the modern electronics that go wrong. Get a well maintained one and you’ll be golden.
