Love my 40AE. And it’s been my DD for over 2 years now. I’ve discovered a whole new driving relationship since moving from Chicago to Cali. Nothing like mountain driving to appreciate the incredible driving dynamics.
I love the kind of afterthought rear seats :D Gotta be sporty... with four lads in your machine! Good to see you find time and energy for your passion, keep em coming!
Thanks :) To be honest the energy is hard at the moment (the amount of hair growth between the videos gives you an indication of how long it takes to get them done!)
just got a millenium edition (2000 C4) with 165k miles and this video is spot on. ive been loving the slow in fast out style. every curve an opportunity for some fun! thanks for the 996 love!
This was an amazing review. I own a 05 997 however i really want this one. its not that i dont ike mine but i just love the 996. The 996 anniversary has alot of things that make the car standout!
Love the review... Wayyy overdue by the citizens of Planet Earth. Thank you for stepping up! Oh, yeah, I just completed the purchase of one today! Began the negotiations with the dealer a little over a week ago, PPI was completed yesterday, and today I took delivery! I previously owned a 997 Turbo years ago (a 2008, haven't owned it since 2012...) and when I decided to get a new 911, I set my sights on the 40AE because it is such an understated N/A 911, with just the right amount of spirit! (For me, anyway...) Cheers!
@@RUNDMC1 US.. Washington state! Our Porsches come equipped with the Steering Column Power Kit, which relocates them to the proper side of the car. Cheers! :-)
Finally have my first 911, a 2003 manual C2 in silver with boxster red leather, and I absolutely love it. Every journey feels like an event and it's just a great experience behind the wheel. Hopefully it will be with me for years to come. Enjoyed the video - thank you.
Great Video of a great car ! This is going to skyrocket in price soon, but I would never keep it as an investment but as a really beautiful car to drive ...
Hi Gez, we met at Eurotunnel this morning and the penny only dropped after I've got to France :-)... I've remembered watching a couple of your RU-vid videos about a year ago and I was quite annoyed with myself for not recognising you straightaway since I really found your videos to be very good indeed. Anyway, I just wanted to say hello and hope you've had a good trip to Germany. The DeLorean looks great, always loved the car, and it is nice to see how many people take photos and are genuinely interested in the car. I don't think there are many cars out there that can attract that kind of interest. By the way, your videos are really good, it would be nice to see more in the future, maybe on different cars? It was great chatting with you. Cheers, Lucas
Hi Lucas - great to meet you too! How random you’d already seen some of my stuff on RU-vid. The channel was originally intended to be about running and cars - unfortunately it ended up turning into something else! Once I recover I will definitely be getting back on the case though - got lots of cars I want to feature! Hope your trip is going well too, and safe drive home again :)
I am a fellow UK owner of a 40th Anniversary. Love mine. It's all the car you need for fast road fun and the occasional track day and a great 911 to my mind.
Great video. I loved mine. I remember back in ‘04, the MSRP was 91,xxx.xx. My dealer offered $10k off MSRP. I was intrigued by the special features of the 40 AE. Great memories. Well done. I kept (still have) the wallet & suitcase. Cheers/B
Finally a detailed review. I own #602. Sadly it doesn't have the U.S. spec dealer installed sport exhaust switch. I do worry about the IMS as it has not been replaced. I've had it for 2 years and have 65,000 miles on it.
It really has same HP as a base 2014 carrera!I just updated suspension on mine (bilstein b6 + HR springs + 1” drop in ride height) and it drives better than when new. In USA it is not as rare as UK so it may not fetch as much of a premium, but at least price is no longer going down on these.
RUN-DMC - Nice review on the 996 theme ... However one question remains to me " unanswered “ as roughly in every 996 vid when it comes to IMS failing rates !... We all hear numbers starting from 1% going through 3% ... 5% ... 8% ... ending at 10% depending on reviewers ... Now my point : Dedicated Porsche specialized magazines stated long ago that during the 996 worldwide career , a substancial number of owners have had their engines " replaced " during a regular service without the dealers in question having told a single word to the owners ( supposedly future potencial failure prone engine detected during diagnosis ) ... so , these are costumers which are convinced until today they have the original engine but ... " they have not " !... Most of these engines " would have " failed at some point sooner or later , right ? So my ultimate question : On which of all these " rates " that number of engines ( the ones explained above ) are also included ?... 1%?... 3%?... 5%?... 8%?... or 10% ?... From a 2003 996 C4S owner also " worried " with its IMSB !... 👍
Stumbled across this and thought 'whoa, isn't this the Long-COVID guy?!' ... as a fellow car enthusiast in recovery myself, I hope you are doing well and I hope we can both get back to the track soon.
@@RUNDMC1 No kidding. The whole COVID experience got me thinking 'I should probably pull the trigger on those dream cars sooner than later' .. thus looking into what the 996 is like. I test drove a 996.2 4S and it felt pretty tired / heavy. Maybe a C2 is the better way to go. Either way, I hope you're doing better with your recovery.
There were 3 generations of 996/997 IMS bearings. 1st, 1999-mid 2000(double row) 2nd,mid/late 2000-mid 2005(thin single row), 3rd, mid 2005- 2008(wider stronger single row). Most problems were with the 2nd gen.
Bore scoring now exceeds IMS for engine destruction according to IMS fix vendor Flat 6 Innovations. Second negative item is the severe shortage of 3.6 L blocks, the earlier 3.4 has an advantage there although most of those lack the torque you really want to feel when driving alone.
@@computerhelpcc My 2006 Cayman S is a very satisfying car. Low weight, plenty of power and mid engine. Every time I think I want a 911, I get in it, get on the road and I come to my senses.
@@RUNDMC1 I bought it last December on "Bring a Trailer" for $42K. One just sold last week for $43 but generally the range is about 35K to 45K. Its a great site for watching live auctions of mostly special cars. My car still smells like a new leather jacket when I get in it.
I test drove this car before I picked up my 996 turbo. I was really surprised how well it drove. The x51 package really made a difference. It's just too bad it only came in silver
It’s a bit tighter with some more zip at the top end. Love the standard C2 too though! Cable throttle manual 996.1 is also 🔥 but when I started looking it was for 996.2s and then saw this 40AE come up :)
Great video very informative. I wonder if you could give me some idea I want that car is worth today? I am pursuing one now, it has50,000 miles on it, and the IMS and rear main seal have been done, As well as the fly wheel.
Hi Tom, depends what country you’re in! You can get a good cross section of values in different places by looking at the cars for sale on the 40 Jahre Registry.
Great video. However, with the 40 jahre now similar money to 997.2S that remedied common issues in the the 996/997.1, would you buy one over a 997.2S ? 🤔
Good question - horses for courses and I think a 997.2 C2S is still about £35k, so a bit more? For me it would depend on your use and length of ownership. I suspect the 40AE will hold it’s value better over a 10 year period, while the 997.2 will be the objectively ‘better’ road car.
A long hauler here enjoying your videos. Where can I get a doctor like you! I own a VW Golf R32 that I am unable to drive with the fatigue at present. Keeps me positive to get better thinking of a nice drive. Take care
Hi Frank, thanks for watching the car stuff too! I want to get some more of that out but it takes longer to make and I don’t have the energy at the moment!
RUN-DMC my 40 jahre has done 68000 miles, for now I am just avoiding short trips, frequent oil change (twice a year) and avoid driving in cold weather. I am prepared for the day it needs rebuild though. Great video by the way, thank you for putting our cars on the map!
