The mk4 R32 was produced from years 2002 to 2004. Truly a great iconic car, a thrill to drive and the torque produced is phenomenal. Certainly a near future classic investment.

They still make lots of VR6s. The current Touareg, Passat and Atlas are available with them.

If I’m not mistaken, the r32 was also made in 2008 on the mkV golf platform as well (thereafter becoming the golf R on later golf platforms) and was also available with a DSG.

Adam Schoene you’re right, but the mk4 r32 was only one year. I should have been more clear

MKIV R32 was only in 2004 (in the US) and only in 6 speed manual. The MKV R32 was only in 2008 and only in DSG (in the US). Both had minimal options available unfortunately here stateside. NA never gets the fun German cars. :(

I can't believe that I'm about to disagree with you Zack, but my opinion is that while, yes, the MKIV is probably single handedly responsible for truly maintstreaming the VW tuning scene at the turn of the century, the 1.8t was what really allowed a young generation of enthusiasts to do some pretty neat things. The R32 is a very special model with a fantastic engine. However, the 150hp 1.8t and the GTi's more powerful variant allowed..sort of normal people.. be able to afford getting into tuning and other modifications. The R32 was what those people wished they could afford.

The difference between the platforms is the R32 was a turn key track capable car with daily abilities. The 1.8T, and later the 2.0T, were more tuneable that's true, but weren't turn key ready for the dual life. Even now the MK6, MK7, MK7.5 Golf R still is best suited with mods to make it more trackable and aren't as turn key ready to hit the track in comparison. They are far better than the GTI/Golf today and even in the MKIV generation, but still not on the same level as the original MKIV R32, and even to an extent the MKV R32 was at release. Or at least that's my experience having been a MKIV R32 owner, and current MK6 Golf R owner anyway.

VW came back with the r32 again in 2008 for the U.S. But again, it was only offered to us for one year, just like it was in 2004

VW does make the VR6 in the Passat and the Atlas. Just not in little fun cars.

Are you old enough to drive? Lol. The R32 was equipped in Europe with DSG also with an option of 6 speed manual. Here in the states we only received the 6 speed. Here in the states we only had one option and that was only cloth or leather, 4 options of colors. The European counterpart R32 had a lot of choices. 7 color choices optional sunroof, optional 2 or 4 door. European R32 had HID’s and Navigation. The 2004 Audi TT has the same exact engine 250 hp and that only came with DSG.
