Timing chain replacement on a 2005 Nissan Frontier. The engine makes a loud whining noise due to secondary tensioner and chain contact. Paying comprehensive insurance on this car so need to get this fixed so it does not damage the engine. There is a class action lawsuit against Nissan because of this issue. I've also been advised to file a complaint with NHSTA for this issue.

successsssss!!!! thank you for all your support... i always put some paper balls on the intake manifold and holes where a bolt could fall into... i forgot to take them out so that was the problem... :) but now runs great again...

+fireblade639 Good news !!! Happy to hear. I suppose you had to remove the intake manifold again to remove the paper balls? If you look at the video, I had paper balls in the intake manifold also. Glad I did not forget to remove them :-)

Great job on the videos. How many miles did this vehicle have at this point? all the guides look in good shape. I trying to decide if i should do mine to be pro-active since my water pump is starting to leak. I have 130,000.

Thanks. The vehical had 110K miles when I made the repairs. Now at 130K and still doing fine. Just passed Maryland emissions without any issues. If you're not having a whining noise from your engine, I would not bother. There is cutout for the water pump on the right side of the timing case so you don't have to remove the whole case.

+fireblade639 Thank you and good luck. My advice: - Take your time. Don't be in a rush. If you rush, something will go wrong. It took me about 1 week to complete mine working on and off. - Clean the timing cover properly of old gasket to prevent oil leaks. I used a hard nylon bristle brush after spraying the cover with gasket remover and keeping overnight and the old gasket comes off easily. - I suggest using an impact wrench to remove the intake and exhaust sprockets. But you will need to use a torque wrench to install them to be sure of the correct torque. I bought a 23 mm crowfoot wrench and attached it to a breaker bar in order to hold the camshafts securely. A 23 mm wrench did not give enough leverage for the force needed to torque those sprockets.

You did a great job on this video. I learned so much. Thanks for the wonderful video. Your video was very informative. Thanks again. By the way on the left secondary timing chain isn't there a mark I see to aline the sprocket with on the back side?
@diybillyc5000
@diybillyc5000 8 лет назад
+ERROL DILON Thanks for the compliments and I'm glad it helped you. No there is no timing marks on the left secondary timing chain. I believe you can only install it one way as there is a notch to enforce the alignment if I remember correctly. Regardless I made some marks myself just to be on the safe side.

Hi DIY BILLY. Off subject but would you happen to know what the violet wire on harness connects to from the front blinker. I’m all out of my mind cause I don’t see violet anymore by the front chassis. If you could help it would be much appreciated.

hi, i'm about to make the same thing to my engine, do you have to remove the upper oil pan or it can be done without remove it???
@diybillyc5000
@diybillyc5000 9 лет назад
+fireblade639 Hi. There's no need to remove the oil pan. However, there are 2 bolt holding the timing cover to the oil pan at the front and those 2 bolts have to be removed.

hi DIYBilly so why does the motor have to be set a TDC before replacing the timing chain?
@diybillyc5000
@diybillyc5000 5 лет назад
It is recommended to do this. If you don't there is a chance that the camshaft can move and this will really mess things up

Questions....did you need to drain the oil and coolant before doing this and do you actually have to put the engine at Too Dead Center when doing it?
@diybillyc5000
@diybillyc5000 5 лет назад
Yes you need to drain the oil and coolant. I also replaced the water pump because it was a convenient time. Top dead center is the best position and is recommended by the service manual
@rickchambers73
@rickchambers73 7 лет назад
can't understand why you pulled the intake. you can find number 1cyl compression gauge.. alot easier and faster than pulling intake or you can just line up the marks
@diybillyc5000
@diybillyc5000 7 лет назад
First off it was leaking some oil and this is the best time to get the gasket changed. Secondly finding TDC is much easier with the intake removed and also you need to hold the camshafts with a wrench to remove the cam pulleys. It's just better to do it the right way and be done once and for all. The instructions are all there in the Nissan service manual for the car.

hi again. i just did my tensioners... they were all worn... took me 4 days.. from 8 am to 10 pm but a have some trouble... i don't know what did i do wrong?? but when everything was assembled i pick up the key and crank the car, first did a noise like dry from the chain next the noise went away and the car was in idle like reving up and down by itself then it died and now it wont start... double check everithing but now i'm lost, "engine service soon" light up but there are no codes on the scanner...
@diybillyc5000
@diybillyc5000 9 лет назад
+fireblade639 When you say it won't start you mean it starts and then dies or does not start at all. Check all hose connections like intake manifold to brake booster. If you took off the fuel pump fuse make sure you reconnected it. Recheck all the basics. If everything is connected and still not starting you can try to turn the engine by hand and see if everything is connected. Good luck

@@ko4gpa i plan on stripping down a 15-17 long block with lower miles on the engines that dont have this problem..since the dealership charges the same amount to have this problem repaired
