That transmission had been serviced before. The filter and gasket removed were aftermarket replacements. The original gaskets have a metal center with rubber coating and are semi rigid and are also (Reusable), unlike the one newly installed. Fel Pro makes a good OEM replacement gasket as good as Ac Delco's OEM. If you jack the car up on the drivers side so that the car is angled toward passenger side and remove the check plug it will drain at least 4 quarts of fluid in a nice stream. Then loosen the pan bolts and drain the remaining fluid. This method is a little less messy.
less stress on the pan and gasket as well while removing all those bolts, should alternate bolts every other clock wise I prefer to loosen them that way, I like your tip though, I will incorporate that into my practice.

This is a nicely done how to . I would like to add two more tips for viewers. Buy the filter kit that has the OEM style gasket . It has two locator tabs , one at the front and one at the rear , to make installation easier and are less prone to leak. Without those tabs the gasket bridges two pan holes over areas of the mating service between the pan and transmission body. Also getting the right amount of fluid back in is at best an educated guess . The best method might be to measure what you drain out and refill the same amount.
You are wrong about guessing the transmission fluid level! On the Cobalt, G5, ion, HHr, the 4t40 & 4t45 has a overflow bolt! You simply remove the bolt in the overflow hole & fill it until it overflows with the vehicle running. Also, If one changes their trans filter & fluid every 15k-30 miles then maybe clean the metal shavings out of the pan but, if you have 100k+ mileage & the trans slips, THE METAL SHAVINGS IS "THE TIES THAT BIND" & COULD BE THE ONLU THING HOLDING THE TRANSMIDDION TOGETHER!!! SOON THERE AFTER IF THE TRANS STARTS SLIPPING, THAT COULD BE WHY.
I did it. Thank you. Your tip for removing the sleeve / plug for the filter to the transmission body came in handy. I used a piece of wood because I did not have a rubber mallet to put it back in. Very easy job. I used the Castrol Dextron V1. Got it for $5 per quart. We have had the car fro about 3 years and it has over 180k miles. I am not sure if this was the first change ever. The fluid was still pink. There was a lot of dirt on the magnet. There was no metal shavings or clumps. All in it cost me less than $70.00. Piece of mind for another 2 to 3 years. Thank you for the video. It was perfect.
I give this guy a big thumbs up for his video and I give GM a VERY BIG THUMBS DOWN for their ridiculous design for checking transmission fluid levels (on the Cobalt). I will NEVER by a GM again.

Did u take out the overflow plug to ensure that you did not overfill it. U HAVE TO HAVE THE VEHICLE PERFECTLY LEVEL! THE PLUG UNSCREWS & ITS EITHER ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE TRANS OR THE REAR. ITS BEEN A WHILE HOWEVER, I WILL BE DOING THE TRANS FILTER ON MY Pontiac G5! When its in high gear (4th, overdrive) When I let off the gas, when I accelerate it slips in 4th gear...if this does not fix this issue, I have found a 38k mile transmission but z that is not the easiest job! Especially with being in the rustbelt, no garage...
Peice of advice jack up rear of car put jack stands under it reove plug on side of trans you should of nat had to add 7 qts oil for drain and fill that why you remove plug on side of trans once it starts to drip out your pretty much full. Tighten plug start your car let it up to temp. wile on jack stands losen plug not to take it off enough to see if oil startsto drain.As far as your gasket goes use copper coat on pan to keep it from moveing Going threw gears is also nesasary good job.
Yeah,why is he even removing the entire pan?? The car should be level! Not on an angle. Why not just unscrew the plug & add the fluid?? I don’t see why he’s removing the entire pan & gasket just to “ add fluid”.-?!?!?!
I have read that the car needs to be leveled when completing this process. When you put the front 2 tires on ramps, I know that the top of the ramps were flat so it looked like it leveled out the front of the car even though the back was still on the ground if that makes any sense. That's not a problem? I only have 2 jack stands and I am trying to figure out what the best way to level my car out would be. I don't have anyone else to help me here so I appreciate any and all of the advice you can give me! I've had a number of damages caused by someone and seeing how I cannot afford mechanics or body shops, but I an determined to repair it all on my own. Please let me know as soon as you can... thanks so much!
you can reuse the gasket. the car is supposed to be level and you need to remove the drain plug when your filling to make sure it just enough and not to much..
Your supposed to the level plug off to see if its full or not right when the fluid starts to run out while running then thats when the trans fluid is full
Hi! I recently had my transmisión fluid and filter replaced and the next day it started doing wierd noices when I accelerated. Do you have any idea of what it could be? I have a chevy cobalt and before the fluid change it was working well. Thank you in advance ❤️
Where did you get the parts cleaner tub set up and what liquid are you using? Is the liquid recycled back through a few time too or does it just go into a separate spot for disposal. Thanks, great video!
Hey JB, I purchase the parts cleaner in a yard sale a few years ago. I use two gallons of extra strength decreaser the one you buy at home Depot for 10bucks a gallon. And I fill the drum 3/4 with water. The decreaser is concentrated so it will mix good with the water. I may use the same mix for a few months 3-4 depending on how often I use it for jobs. If the oil dark brown its burned check clutches, light brownish it just need to be replaced, Pink or red it good leave it alone, either or can have a leak due to missing bolt or etc. I am getting there lol
I put the oil pan back, but when I was filling it up, it started leaking? Brand new gasket, maybe the bolts were not secured? Any idea why? I dont have a special torque wrench to specifically put 7 lbs, I just have a regular torque wrench
Hi Ibanez, the only thing i can think of is you probably need to re-torque the pan bolts again. Make sure you go in a Cris cross pattern. I hop this helps you.

there is a weep hole/ plug on the passenger side of tranny , fill until it runs out of weep hole . GM saved themselves 5 cents by not putting in a dipstick . car must be level .
If your an experience do it your self / handy mechanic...i would say about 1hr with 2 15min brakes but if your a bigger i would estimate about 1 1/2 hr give or take if you are using the right tools. Again this is an estimate time frame.

@@aryramirez365 , hola, you te recommend que le cambies el asiete y filtro. Cada 60,000 millas o 6 años se recommend que se cambie y si el carro tiene 93,000 ya es tiempo amigo
@Toob247 Toob247 Just to give a bit more explanation, there is a small plug on the side of the transmission that you remove before starting to refill the transmission. When transmission fluid starts dripping out of this hole, it is full and you reinstall the plug. No dip stick. If you want to get even more accurate, be sure the vehicle is level. Do the initial fill and reinstall the plug hand tight. Start the vehicle and run through the gears as shown. Turn the vehicle off, remove the plug and see if some is still running out. If not add until it starts running out and then install and tighten the plug. See my video on a 2002 Grand AM for a view of this plug.
I called chevy dealer and they said that because i bought my used chevy cobalt 2007 with 100,000 that they dont recommend a filter change, cause it could ruin the transmission.

@@oscars-autorepair3236 I have a 2010 cobalt with 208k miles, I'm not sure if the previous owner had ever serviced the transmission. is it advisable to change the oil/service? I've been told it could cause a slip. what do you think?
Thanks u for sharing. I have a question, is there any way to take out just a bit trans oil to check for contamination? I'm trying to determine if there's coolant in my trans oil, since I'm also getting some in my coolant reservoir. Not sure if it's trans or engine oil. Thanks for your help.
Wilson Gomez My only advice , I would check thru the fill hole . Stick a long 1/4 tube through the trans fill hole till you bottom out and pull the tube back up and check the 1/4 tube. Think about when you stick a straw in a soda can and you put your finger in the end of the straw and take the straw back out and you have just enough fluid in the straw. I hope this helps you out.

I recently went over a speedbump too fast. Had to replace my drivers side cv axle, suspension stabilizer link bar, and the spindle steering knuckle(which cracked in two). I replace all the parts but now it wont move went i turn it on. I tried shifting to drive or reverse and it wont move at all. Its make a slight screeching sound like a door that needs lube when i set it back to park. Does anyone have the same problem? Its a 2009 cobalt automatic.
